Crackling/Popping Noise Problem from one channel

I have just set up a brand new Denon AVR 990 receiver. Beautiful sound but found an unusual problem. While playing a source using the receiver's Direct and Pure Direct settings I get loud popping and crackling sound from the front left channel. I have checked speaker connections, dvd/cd player connections and settings, changed digital connections between player and receiver, and have tried a different dvd player. It only occurs in the left channel, not on the right. I also switched speaker connections, still noise only from left channel. Anyone ever encounter this issue?

I have Denon 2808 for the last 2 years and no such problem. May need to return it. Have you tried frogging speakers and speaker cables ?

My thoughts as well thsmith. Radioranger when you say: "I also switched speaker connections" do you mean you connected the right speaker to the left speaker output on the AVR and the problem stayed with the left output and then was heard from the right speaker? Or are you saying you did this and it stayed in the left speaker? Either way I think you have your answer.

    and welcome to CP rr

Edit: Nevermind, my question was the same that Apphd asked, about clarifying whether or not the popping/crackling moved to the right speaker when you swapped speaker cables, or if it stayed with the left speaker.

Thanks for the quick replies! As far as switching the speakers...I unplugged the speakers and connected the right speaker to the left out, and the left speaker to the right out. The noise only came from the speaker connected to the left channel, so I know it's not a speaker or cabling issue. I originally had the dvd player connected to the receiver via optical out. I then bought a new digital audio coax and connect the dvd player that way....same noise from the left speaker only. It also only happens when I'm listening using the Direct or Pure Direct setting, not with Stereo or sound settings.

One long shot, is your output setting bitstream or PCM?
If bitstream try changing it to PCM. Somewhere I have seen something about a bitstream signal to AVRs that can not decode Dolby Digital or DTS producing a high volume sound. Since it is only in Direct or Pure Direct, that would have the processing turned off so who knows, it's worth a try.

Other than that I would say you have narrowed it down to something in the AVR.

    Good luck

Thanks Apphd, that occurred to me also...tried changing the output setting, no luck.
This forum, and your help, is great. Thank you.

Try connecting with RCA interconects and see what happens. Try a different source for input. Karl
