That's because they fired a large majority of their staff, and are held to make the same revenue in this recession. It has nothing to do with making commission - they still aren't making it. Not paying commission is what keeps them somewhat profitable.

They jump on you because they don't want to get fired. Make the numbers, or find another job - that's their job.

I hated ow much they pushed things. It's manipulation plain and simple - but then again all sales jobs are.

Somehow Jesse,, I can't get a mental picture of you behind a shopping cart.;)

You're right George, I get the sales staff to carry whatever I'm buying up to the register. :D

Bonuses are based on the warranty penetration and the accesory sales percentage. While they may not work on "commision" they get raises and promotions based on how well they do the add-on sales. I worked at h.h. Gregg about 15 years ago and there were a good many people who would lie/cheat/steal to get you to buy the warranty. They were paid commision on those and in most cases it was 25-35% of the price of the warranty. The odds that you need that extended warranty are far smaller than the odds that you won't need it. Also, most are set to start at time of purchase, but they bill everything to the warranty of the unit until the warranty runs out. Some of these guys were selling cheap 2 year warranties on washer/dryer units that already had a 5 year parts and labor, so basically that money went straight into the companies coffers. I don't buy them out of principal and have never regretted not getting one.

It gives you piece of mind.
It takes care of the damage that your manufacturer warranty doesn't cover.
It gives you coverage beyond the manufacturer warranty, thats the reason they cover you for X days, they know it is likely to break in X+10 days.

Old people fall for these things terribly bad especially w/technology as they likely don't understand it as well.

unfortunately there will be no raises to be had at best buy now they just had a huge pay cut for all employees at the retail level bring them all down to same pay so as for now there is no incentive to sell ****. but i agree with all there is a way to bring it up like your supposed to but there is no need to push the issue and be an **** about it like most sales KIDS are, like knucklehead said
God forbid they fire a bunch of irreplaceable 18 y/o kids.
i do work at bb (go ahead i have a burn suit on :) ) the one i'm at has a magnolia in it so there is some nicer equip to play with, i do get irritated with the corporate bs some person sitting in a office some where that has never been on retail sales floor directing the sales floor with his/her nose in a numbers book but that big business. i have been only working part time but now that i am some what settled in az i'm am starting to look other places to work to get away from the retail bs, just sick of it, sometimes i just don't want to admit i work at bb and other days i don't mind.

There's nothing wrong with a little rant once in a while, and as far as rants go, yours was very tame and controlled!

There's also no shame in working for BB. Just because some of us don't think they invented sliced bread (which they didn't, BTW), it doesn't mean it's a bad store. I have a very similar opinion of Costco, actually. They both work as long as you know what your expectations are. BB is not always as cheap as they would like us to think, and they are not always as service oriented as they would like us to think, but buying appliances from them is no worse than going to Sears or anywhere else. In my case, I got pricing that was every bit as good as online shopping, if not better, and I got to see the product beforehand, so I'm not complaining. Finding an intelligent, pleasant salesperson, that actually knows his stuff? Now that's priceless ... and it can happen at Sears, or Best Buy, or anywhere else, if you get lucky. Hopefully you're one of those rare specimens!

I can imagine that working in retail is difficult sometimes. After all, we only have to follow the trolls on CP to realize that there are some incredible whiners out there, and we only have to deal with them in a virtual setting. Perhaps part of good staff training would be to help differentiate between a paying customer that won't give you any BS, and a real life troll that isn't worth the effort. As for taking advantage of seniors? Those people go straight to hell in the end!

there are a few of us out there that are into what we sell but for the most part bb hires kids going to college and most are just there for work. to me electronic store are toy stores.
my favorite customers are the ones that come in and think they know alot about audio and have one little piece of information and try to get me (thinking i don't know anything) and if the situation is right i will go deep and see how much they know for the most part i have more customers that walk away tail between there legs cause i actually know something more than the thd of the receiver (why these types of customers think this is the piece of info that will set them above the rest i will never know) but than you get the guy that has some really nice equip and is stoked i actually know what he is talking about and want to incorporate his existing stuff and if needed let him know of a better store that would better suit his needs.
last but not least i have a lot of you polkies to thank i have used a lot of the knowledge i have read here over the past 9 years

We purchased a ipod touch for my son a while back. Got the same speech, so I asked if the extended warranty covered anything short of submerging in a bucket of water. Sales associate says "yes our warrenty is the best you can get. For two years if anything at all happens we replace it." So my wife says we better get it, because she knows our son too well, and how I get when he brakes something. Well you would know it, he knocks it off the coffee table and cracks the glass. Back to Best Buy b/c we got the warrenty that covers everything. Suprise! everything but a cracked glass. I could have used that 30 bucks to go to the repair I will have to get now. BB sucks!!!!!!!!!!

^^ This is the same tactic they use to sell Cellular phone insurance as well. Read, read, read, re-read the fine print.

Long story short I had a friend who purchased cell phone insurance was told the phone would be replaced if it was ever damaged, mutilated, stolen, etc. Guess what it's a load of BS too!
