So I'm walking by one of my RTi70s tonight and notice that the corner of the baseplate looks kind of odd. I tilt the speaker back, and the wood has swollen up to twice its size. Naturally, I reach down to touch it... and a chunk comes off in my hand. I look at that chunk... and it's yellow... and smells like piss.

So yeah... the dog has apparently been marking it for some time without me noticing, effectively destroying my speaker. It still sounds the same... but how in the hell do you deal with that (other than killing the dog)?

Apologies in advance to the forum moderators... but FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccckkkkkk!!!!!

Sorry to hear! Show the doggy who is the boss...Just J/K. I have pets (dogs and cats) indoors and there's no easy solution other than training them. Or put a door and lock the room where the A/V equipments are in and don't let any pet roam in there unless you are in there.

BAH HA HA HA! Maybe he's trying to tell me it's time to upgrade!

Ugh... I'm not sure what to do with the speaker now. And here I was considering an XPA-3 to give it some more power. So much for that plan!

luckily my gf's yorkie does not get any satisfaction with destroying anything in our house. But that little **** has a habit of urinating on the bathroom carpet every nite once we go to bed. She has the right idea as to the room, but her pads are about 10ft the other way

wow, I love dogs but that just sucks.
Hopefully it is just the base plates, which look pretty easy to replace.

How about using one of hose livestock electric fence chargers, with a contact plate on the floor.....lil squirt and ...ZAPP....he'll only do that once...hehe

They sell small electric pads made to keep animals off of furniture, you could look into those.

Sorry to hear about the speakers. At least the dog wasn't being malicious with his/her action, they were just being an animal.

Hope you can get it fixed somehow.

Does Polk sell empty cabinets by chance?

Man, after reading that I had to check my speakers right away. I've got 2 dogs (a husky and pitbull) that are both female and very well-trained so I know they wouldn't even go near the things but my neighbor has a maltese/shitzu mix (male) and I'm always paranoid about him peeing in our place...especially when hes sniffing around the SDA's or going behind the couch/recliner to my RT towers.

I like the idea of checking with polk for a cabinet. You never know.....or looking for a used/blown one or???

For me, no more kids, no more wives, no more pets in the house = happiness.. :) Oh I forgot, girlfriends never see my house in the daytime either. :D

    Good luck.

A friend of a friend gave me a Piano--didn't realize it until it was home but he had a cat that made that piano its ****. I guess I can't complain much as it was free-but I do have to spray it (lysol/febreze) from time to time---eventually I'll get around to sealing it (to hopefully seal in any odors).

I used to have cats--and one of them started the marking indoors.--I found this spray at the petstore that the cats really really realy did not like. They curled thier noses up when they got anywhere near it. I forget what its call-not sure if it works for dogs too.

your problem had me thinkin...how big is the chunk that came off?
Minwax makes a epoxy resin that you use for repairing rot in wood.
I bet you could use that and then bondo any 'chunks' that were missing..
then nik could paint them for yah
IF yo don't have any luck with getting a new one from Polk CS.

Yeah... the wood is swollen to like twice its size underneath. The chunk that came off was mostly below where the bottom of the speaker USED to be. I really can't imagine any way to fix it.

If Polk CS can't help, I may have to take the bottom off the other speaker and use it as a template to make a new baseplate. Or maybe I'll just give it a few months and buy some new speakers. :P

(Good thing, too... 'cause I was eyeballing some RTiA7s. Heh...)

As far as repair/ replacement, can you post a pic of the "offended" speaker?
I don't think that it would be that hard to repair or duplicate.
I am sure it is just MDF.

One 'good thing', when you get/ paint the new one (or the replacement one)
be sure to clear coat the whole thing with a couple coats of flat poly, including bottom, and you won't ever have this problem again.

Heh... I do actually need new cables up front. I'm just procrastinating until I get the XPA-3 to power it all. (But the Oppo BDP-83 is next in line for purchase, so that can wait.)

Ah, the benefits of having a dedicated room with a door. I have two boxers that if by chance I leave the door open, they WILL NOT cross the line unless we ask them two. It helps that the boxers are female as well, not a whole lot of leg cocking going on. Glad to see the speaker will be an easy repair, I couldn't even imagine loosing my RTi70's.
