Took 2.5 weeks to prep, prime, and paint the den...

Now I am going to work on the floor and get that shining again! Then Im headed to the kitchen!

Let the fun begin!

We ripping out the counter tops, the sink - heavily modifying the cabinets and replacing the floor...

Should be fun!

Wow, you're doing quite a bit. I remember you said you were taking lots of pics from the process. You better upload them and organize them so you can have a nice show and tell session when you're done!!

Lucky you! That's what I'm doing now. I have 6 floors to refinish. Then paint and then trim. Yay. Superhappyfuntime.

I also have to lay a floor in the garage, regrade part of the backyard away from the house to fix a drainage problem, remove an annoying and destructive white mulberry tree (not native, from China) and then...wait for it...the bathroom! What fun!

Hey, at least you guys have the money to do it. My house needs a roof, gutters, soffit, trim, some siding, windows, a new kitchen, reinforcement to the floor structure, a finished bathroom, and various other stuff that I'm forgetting right now. Doing it myself, like you are, but only in bits and pieces as money permits!

We've decided on a nice masonry wall, about 3.5 feet high and glass dishes set on end. Then I will hand one of the neighborhood brats a baseball bat and $20 to keep quiet and bash all the plates, thusly making very many jagged edges that reflect the light so beautifully.

Who said I had money? I'm nickel and dimeing it just like you. If I had the money available, I would have had it all done by now.

But like I mentioned in another thread, I just paid off the last of my debt and it has me quite broke until the end of the month. It's had me quite broke most of the summer.

Sid glad to see you are improving your skills, I have plenty of tasks you can do down here once your up to snuff........

BTW--Did you see the TAS article on the Khartago, the reviewer waxed on about it, sounded just like you and the others who have used it, anyway, Klaus was well represented. Once again the experienced ears at Club Polk had it nailed first.

Glad to hear you're out of debt. Wish I could say the same. I'm sure I could, in probably about 15 years, if I stopped drinking, and concentrated on my bills. My goal isn't so much to get the house paid off, as to get out from under my CC bills. I was young and a bit foolish to buy a house with no down payment and little saved up for all the inevitable house "needs". But, it's where I got myself, and I need to figure it out from here.

I've got a lot of years ahead of me to do better than I've done... now I just need to get my head around the fact that I need to be responsible now, and enjoy life later. A bit backwards than everyone else tells me I should be doing...

Took me just over 10 years to pay it all off, dude. Lotsa sacrificing, lotsa extra hours worked and even multiple jobs.

But so far, just in sanding and refinishing the floors myself I've saved over $4,000. I finished off the garage and did the electrical, the sheetrock, painting, rehung the door to the house and I still gotta finish the floor and insulate the garage door but saved about $3,000 in labor so far. The insulation kit for the door is about $400. I can do the same thing for about $80 and a Saturday afternoon of work cutting polyethylene foam and 1/4 inch plywood for paneling.

The hard part is finding suitable building materials that aren't cheap junk but won't break the bank. Some stuff I'm saving up for other stuff, command decisions. A bunch of people think I should rip up my solid oak wood floors and replace it with that Pergo crap but that's insane and expensive. So I'm renting a sander for a weekend at about $300 a weekend and sanding floors and only replacing the pieces that are badly damaged. The other blemishes, once cleaned up with the sander, add a character that only comes with age.

But building materials are cheaper than you would think and if you just think about what you have to do before you do it, you can save yourself a bundle. Also, I've been able to do thinks that make the house more energy efficient to save myself money in the long run and and some of the stuff can even earn me a tax credit. You don't have to break the bank to have a nice house but you don't have to cheap out either.

Ive saved up quite a bit of money -- I put a small down payment, but am paying about 120 extra a month with a bi-weekly payment plan, should be paid off in 15 years or so my guess at that rate.

On the flip side with that 8,000 cash rebate the government gives, I basically am doing alot of this stuff for free.

The previous owners brought up the roof and foundation to code before we signed the deal and upgraded a few other things.

The house itself is incredibly sound for its age.

I scraped the grunge and old wax off the wood floors and put a new coat of poly on it today (one half) - looks gorgeous.

Hope you roughed it up a bit first. It might not stick so well and end up peeling the in the future. I wish I could just put another coat of finish on by the previous owners carpeted over the wood floors so they are rough. Salvageable but rough.

Pergo is indeed the most worthless crap ever invented .
Why anyone would want it is beyond me. But after seeing
some of the crap people do to houses, I guess I shouldn't be
surprised by anything. I saw a house down here where they
ripped up the carpet and just painted the concrete floor.
Gee, no wonder it was on the market 2 years.

Oh, tons of fun. When we bought our house, we didn't even move in for over 3 months, gutted the entire house, everything down to bare walls. While a pain in the arse, it was so much faster and easier then trying to live in it and do it. It is so much more rewarding doing it yourself vr paying a contractor, plus you save a ton of coin. Have fun!

I just bought one myself. I stayed out for a month so I could get it habitable. I still have some work to do, but i will take that at a better pace. Next on the agenda is upgrading electrical service...

I do all my own work, too. Used to do it for a living, so it's easier for me than some folks.
