Beautiful day outside, the wife and I had planned to head out to Six Flags one more time before the start of school so we can spend some quality time together (she goes to DePaul Univ.). That was until we wake up to our neighbor banging on our door and calling out for us, "Jeanne! Freddy come out here!" Of course I'm a little grumpy waking up at 6am to a screaming neighbor but I figured it might be an emergency or something so I head right outside. Our car was broken into! I head right down to assess the damage, there was glass everywhere, papers/cd's tossed about, seats moved, center console and drawers open I mean WTF?! All for a damn GPS?! Thing is the only thing we leave out is the little suction cup portion attached to the windshield, and we hide the gps unit underneath the seat without any wires exposed. So even if my gps wasn't in the vehicle they still would've broken into it in hopes of finding it. I just can't believe some of the **** people do to score a quick buck for whatever the hell they need. Good thing is the cars already going to a shop now, we found a used glass that'll work and labor is cheap but it just pisses me off how someone can go out of their way just to do such a thing.

sorry to hear of the loss...... sadly now a days alarms mean nada...most dont even look at where the alarm is coming from..you can be in and out in 10 seconds and gone...they had a group here that was doing the very same ..but they would target apt parking lots and there were 5-6 all riding dirt bikes...caught them, but not after over 250 smash and grabs....amazing what some will risk for 20-50 bucks...

I know it happens, it's happened to me before when I was in highschool. I just hate the fact that the card isn't even that old and we've kept it so clean and free of everything until now. Factory alarm didn't even go off, it only does so when a door is opened and the alarm is engaged :( Our other neighbor (of 12 years living here) came out and said this was the first time it's ever happened.

    Sorry to hear bro.

My car never has anything sitting out in the open, nothing. It looks like it's still sitting on the showroom floor, always. People will break in for anything so I give them no reason to do so.

Sorry you had a crap AM/Day.

I did hear on the news while we were in Florida, that you should even clean your window to get rid of the suctionn mark as they will see by the ring you have one in the car some where.

few years ago i went to Kansas city for Expo where i was workign for company and represent videophone to deaf customers.

I had electronics in the back "trunk" of cherokee jeep. I went to Dennys for dinner with bunch of co-workers. my jeep wouldnt start after dinner, i had to go to hotel to make phone calls for tow truck to come and fix but they said they can not come until the morning so i was stuck at the hotel.

Next day, my jeep was broken into and stole bunch of changes and loaf of bread. but didnt steal the electronics?? made no sense.. i figured homeless (kansas city was full of them) was hungry and need bunch of changes. made me mad becuz i had to pay insurance deductible (200 bucks) for broken glass and labor.

they stole my friend's pipe, that was hilarious because it was his favorite. Yes he smokes weed because he has AIDS. i dont againist that

well, i hope you go to 6 flags despite your car was broken into... life moves on and yes it sucks to pay for new window.. sorry dude

There is such an emotional aspect of having your personal property mis-handled by a complete stranger. What a load of ****. I'm sorry.
I've often wondered if these morons have ever done the math of their profit versus risk. Like, how much money on the street can you get for a GPS? $30? $50 at most, right? So, here you are, spending at least 10min for a at most $50. The hourly wage sounds good, until you meet with the idea that you might get cut on the glass and need stiches or you need medical care and it gets infected because you're priorities are f#cked up and that coke or meth sounds better than your health. So you are out a finger or hand for $50. Or you could get shot. Hm. My life for $50? No. The return is higher if I were to join the military and sign up for every dangerous thing out there. Or you could go to jail. Stretch that $50 for 10min work across a few months in jail and it becomes pennies to the hour of labor.

It's not worth the thousands of dollars of damage you do to some other person's property. It's not worth the emotional stress you put someone into where they can't feel like their property is safe anymore. It's not worth the risk. I'm pretty certain that with all of that factored in, it takes a pretty stupid person to steal from another person.

Again, sorry to hear about your problem; I hope the person responsible gets what they deserve.

Lol thanks Jimmy, that gave me a laugh, n thanks to everyone else who posted their feelings. I just think its stupid nowadays the things one cannot do, or has to do simply so they don't get their stuff stolen? I mean its one thing to not leave anything out in view which makes sense, but cleaning my windshield everytime I go home to get rid of that "suction cup ring" just so people don't see that I own one? At least my cane is still there, has some sentimental value to me along with our cds that were in the glove compartment.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened, but, to be honest, I've heard of cases where they have broken into a vehicle because they noticed the mark left by the suction cup on the windshield. It's one of the reasons we use Garmin's friction mount instead (that, and the fact that it was technically illegal to use anything fixed to the windshield in CA, until they decided GPS suction mounts could be used on the lower left corner).

Ron has it right, IMO, and it's an excellent theft prevention policy to adopt. Lot's of people have suffered the same fate as you, in quiet neighborhoods (don't laugh! Yes: we do have them, even in L.A.!) for iPods left in their vehicle etc. etc. I've been trying to educate the wifey, who thinks I'm paranoid, to leave the car so clear of clutter as to suggest that there is not likely to be anything of value anywhere in the car, including hidden locations such as the glove box or trunk.

It's not just the stolen items, it's the hassle, and cost of the replacement glass, especially if they also manage to scratch the bodywork at the same time. Think of it: insurance is not really insurance any more, because making claims cost too much. It's catastrophe insurance only, which covers serious damage, so I bump my deductibles up to at least $1,000 on everything.

On a more positive note, check the value of your GPS replacement, they have become a whole lot cheaper recently. You may even find the exact model you lost for less that you think. Our $1,000 unit from 2007 is now available new from amazon.com for about $250 shipped.

One other thing: Does anyone know if the Garmin Lock type feature, where a GPS is locked with a PIN unless it is starting up at a saved "home" location, actually works?

I feel your pain. A few years back someone drilled out the lock in the rear hatch of my Firebird, and stole my two 12" Alpine Type R subs and two Alpine amps...one of which was a 1200 watt Class D monoblock for the subs...and the other one was 125 watt x 4 that powered the 4 Type R's up front. At least they didn't steal the front 4 speakers or the head unit...if that's any consolation.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck man. People like that have no concept of moral fiber...

Busted the windshield, too. $1,500+ in damages all for a $50 stereo.

I know how you feel and it sucks. It happened on a busy street right where my condo was. I said I wish I had seen it go down, but it's probably better that I hadn't as I would be the one in jail.

I had a Jaguar that was declared a total loss by the insurance company over a 200.00 cd player. The thieves broke the quarterlite glass behind the rear door(1900.00) and shoved a crowbar through the climate control panel(2300.00) to get the radio out. They damaged the leather on the passenger seat(1400.00) and damaged the cars primary wiring harness(2700.00) and the body control module(1750.00) At the time the car was valued at about 14000.00, so for a two hundred dollar radio, the insurance company lost 14 grand!

I'm in the glass business and see this kind of thing all the time. From mindless vandals to petty thieves. Half the time the crooks are better off just saying to the owner "give me a hundred bucks cash right now or I'll smash a window and grab some CD's from you."

Some people are so pathetic and illogical. I've seen a break in where they took the CD's, but left the GPS unit and the Ipod in the glove box!

I guess in a way it helps keep me employed, but still bloody pathetic, some of the stories my customers have.

I already have a pitbull, but itd break my heart to leave her in the car....I know youre kidding though.

And yes Christopher youre more than safe to come by, it happened late at night because I last walked my dogs at about 1-130am and our car was still ok. Like I mentioned, neighbors of +decade here never had anything like that happen.....its just one of those things you know? Even our neighbors boyfriend who had his 2002/03 GTO next to us was appalled, he knows this is a good neighborhood where we're currently at. Oh well crap happens right?

We came back to work one Monday and one of the work vans was sitting on blocks with all the wheels removed. Mind you the business is on a busy 4 lane street about 15 min. from downtown St.Louis. All the company vehicles are now parked in a garage and locked up lol.
