Component Video Cables?

Is there still a need for component video cables? With HDMI and lossless audio being more common, why should one keep them or use them?

I personally don't use them. For video I stick strictly to HDMI, for me the audio is a + imo because I don't even use it being that my receiver doesn't have hdmi inputs. But it serves its purpose sending audio to the tv as well from my cable box in case I dont want to use my surround sound. Oh wait I do use component, for my Wii and thats just because I HAVE to.

Component is still a very viable cable choice. I use Component in most of my setups, and, to me, HDMI is not the greatest thing since sliced bread.

If you need 1080p, or if you want the convenience of a single-cable solution, then HDMI is the way to go. Otherwise you can't go wrong with Component. It is a proven and reliable method.

Didn't mean to bash component,I simply hate clutter so I buy into it for convenience.

How would you get lossless audio, without HDMI?

Optical/coaxial digital connections, that is if the source in itself is pure coming from a cd/sacd/dvd-a or so.

Sometimes you have to use component cables with older HDMI devices or some devices with DVI out because they do not register as HDCP compliant.

DVD players can upconvert 480p to 720p. It's still the same amount of source data so it's not as nice as a HD source. Component will be around for as long as the content providers will allow it. The industry does not like component since it is an analog cable that provides for easy copying of content.

Component can do 720p and 1080i. In fact, the Component specification and cables can handle 1080p, but there are few (if any) source components that do 1080p over component due to DRM.

If I understand correctly, hdmi is good in the short runs but not in the long and component is the samefor both short and long runs without loss of information?
