The Mazda Miata is 20 years old?

Me either. I don't mind the S2K
There are more cars within 100 miles of where I live than you can imagine. The averages here are more obvious merely because of the sheer volume of cars and the hopeless pretentious attitudes toward cars here.
When judging the type of driver for a certain car, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place than Southern California. There are thousands of chicks driving those cute little Hondas here. The numbers don't lie."The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." Neil deGrasse Tyson. -

Big numbers yes, but believe it or not, SoCal is actually not typical of the rest of North America as far as demographics and lifestyle. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Oh whatever. Are you kidding? A race bred car with a 9000RPM screamer of a motor? I've never seen a chick driving an S2000.
These motors don;t really come to life until about 6500rpm, not hardly practical for everyday driving. Impressive rev capability but totally benign under 5K rpm. Rather mundane engine note too.........unless really revving it.
I'd take a std. Boxster everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. If it happens to be an "S" version, then even better.
IMO, of course

Since we are so far off the original topic, I guess I can say that I've been driving the same VW for over 9 years now. Passat V-6 5-speed manual. At the time I bought it, I really wanted an A4 quattro, but I wanted to keep my payments down. The Passat of that era was really close to the A4 in the way it drove. Same steering, same engine, same brakes...in fact, they share something like 80% of the same parts.
Lots of torque from that V6. Fun to drive, but practical too (I can fit a pair of SDA 1C and/or Mirage M3 in the trunk).
I had a Passat VR6 from the early/mid-90's (I wanna say 94?). That thing was a BLAST to drive, but unfortunately it didn't drive much. Had about 130k miles on it and the engine just... decided to fall apart. (Oil pump died, snapped the timing chain, trashed a cam shaft / ruined a piston, etc). That car cost me THOUSANDS to try and fix and i just ended up scratching it.... but despite all the heartache it's probably the most fun car I ever owned and I'm still tempted by VW's sometimes....If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

My next car? Who knows. GLI will be at the top of my list along with a WRX, Mazdaspeed3, or who knows? Probably depends on whats hot when I buy. This whole roadster discussion is purely fantasy for me since I have two small children. I will pretty much always need a 4 door for the time being.
Yep, I have a 97 (yes 12 years old) VR6 GTi. Not the exact same motor as your Passat as your's is the Audi derived V6. I admit I have some mods (basic) but I love this car. A VR motor has such a distinctive sound no other car has and stuffed in a GTi it really scoots. I've hauled so many large items in the hatch. It handles well, the engine note is intoxicating. One complaint is it's not too easy on gas. I will keep this until it dies which could be a long time.
But anyways we are a little off topic............but still talking (not arguing) about cars

I've always been fond of the VR6 motor design, from way back when it was stuffed in the Corrado. Back in 2000, when I bought the Passat, I was also looking at the Jetta GLX with a VR6, but I didn't like the way the shifter felt. The Passat had a much better feel to me.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
I found this and low and behold, the Miata is not on the list..., neither is the Boxster, nor the S2000.

Probably anything with "Truck Nuts".
I used to have a manager that drove a Miata. We'd buy those little rainbow bumper stickers and put one on his back bumper every few weeks or so.
I think the small spider car has somehow become a chick car in the eyes of the common American, which is sad because these things are so much fun to drive. American muscle is the way to be a man... but drive some American muscle across 129 in TN and then roll a cheap Miata or a nice S2000 across that road... Which one is more fun in the twisties?

About 43k LOADED. Over 500 horsepower. Does not scream chick."The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." Neil deGrasse Tyson. -

The cable shifter is vague (and that's putting it nicely) I use a B & M short shift kit on the GTi with 50% reduction and it's like a new gearbox. My parents have 2001 Passat 1.8T with the same gear mechanisim as my GTi and I'm amazed at the difference between the two. I hate the shifter in the Passat. With the short shift kit it's like a completely different gear box.
VW hasn't really made a nice performance shift mechanism for quite sometime. They should be able to, but for some reason they are always vague and sloppy. OTOH, the hydraulic clutch is very nice expecially on a 12 year old car, it really seemed to extend clutch life. I know several people that have gotten 200K on the original clutch in a VR6 no less. The DSG is the bomb though.

Also, fat, huge, heavy, and completely uninspiring doing anything that involves turning the steering wheel.

I just like the VR6 because of the absolutely unholy noise it makes when uncorked.

They LOOK like fast sports cars...IMO of course. Drive like them as well. Was the original Porsche Speedster a chick car? What about the Ferarri 250 or the Lotus 14? They were kinda cute. Men have always been the predominant purchasers of sports cars...especially performance inspired sports cars.

I found an article at Forbes which supposedly takes data straight from new and used car registrations and sorts them out by the % of female registries.
Top cars are (no surprise on the first one)
1. Mistubishi Eclipse (sorry Ron-P) -61% women drivers
2. Audi TT- 59% women
3. VW new Beetle -54.9% women (I'm surprised its not higher)
4. Mitsubishi Endeavor -54.7% women
5. Saturn Sky -54.6% women. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Yeah I noticed that as well -
Even the #1 guy car int the Car Talk link (the Mustang) need to be further expanded. It seems more guys drive a GT and women drive the V-6. That said...lately, around here I see more and more women driving the older (SN95 and newer) GTs than guys."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais
