I experienced no slow down of my internet service. Before I hooked up the router I checked my speed on my provider's (catt.com) website that has a speed test and it was 4.9 mbs and some change. After the router was installed it is still 4.9 and change.

I personally think that another modem for $5 is better than a router. Routers introduce more latency and just cause probs with certain connections. Simple is best in this case. If you do need a router though this one is a very good deal considering you can put a new firmware on it (tomato or dd wrt) to give it the features of a router 10x it's price.

    Care to explain your reasoning?

If nothing else, a modem provides no basic firewalling capabilities. Wide open. BIG GIANT GAPING SECURITY HOLE (in case anybody didn't get that).
I'd advise anybody that does not have a router in place to get one whether they need one or not.

The bridging and roaming works with access points. However I don't think you have those features when you take a wireless router, and just turn off the DHCP. It may help extend the signal, give more coverage. However the roaming I believe is strictly a feature with access points.

Wireless routers are simply a router, a switch and a wireless access point integrated into one device (and technically a firewall, dhcp server and DNS server as well-oh and a web server for its configration pages).

There is however a difference between commercial/business wireless access points and the access point in a home wifi router. Especially when it comes to fine grained configuration and capabilities. But you can bridge or roam with home based wireless access points, assuming the device supports it-not all do.

One thing to keep in mind no matter which WiFi router one gets, is that many of the advanced features such as extended range, double or triple throughput speeds, etc, etc., will only work if you get the matching (or similarly capable) WiFi NIC for the desktop or laptop. If you are only using the built-in NIC of your laptop you may be missing out on the good stuff. Its irrelevant for wired connections-that's where the built-in switch comes into play--Gigabit (1000Mbs) vs. 100Mbs is the major player there.
