Yep, as of two days ago I have a house! hahaha...

We have gone to town in the living room...

We stripped off about 1/32" of trim paint on all the windows and doorways...

We spackled the crap out of everything... had some drywall that needed patching - cut out those sections and reapplied... We have gone through 3 1/2 gallon buckets of spackle - JUST IN THE DEN! (HOLY CRAP) ;)

Tomorrow we sand sand sand...

As soon as sanding is satisfied - we prime... then paint

Move in den furniture - off to the next room!

Also... I have a question, where we are going to mount the TV in the den... the wall has a "fire block" - a horizontal piece of wood that attaches to two studs -- is this strong enough to hold my TV?

I would not trust the fire block to hold the weight of a flat panel TV. You've built houses, you know how most of those bozos do things half ****.

Im going to go out on a limb and say the studs are 24" apart with a horizontal fire blocking about head height and knee cap height -- (useless to me)

What if I were to take a piece of plywood (3/4") and screw it to the studs - then to the fire block - then screw the tv mount to the plywood AND fire block... ???

I think that would suffice, no?

You're sheet rocking stuff anyway, right? Cut a hole and add serious re-enforcement/cross bracing to the area you want to mount the TV. You can run your power and cables in the wall while you're at it, yes.

    Hmm --

Im going to run an AC outlet and the cable for a clean install (dedicated circuit, etc) ---

So while that is going on we can better look to see what is going on.

There ya go. I'm thinking 3/4" ply notched into the face of the studs on both sides. Bolted and glued, that sucker will not give you any problems down the road.

I also have 24" center studs in the house, my TV mount was fun as I couldn't have much adjustment too left or right. But in the end not a problem, and it's been up for 4 years or so.

studs will hold the mount via 4 bolts tight, but my friend i urge you never ever ever use spackling on your walls

The reason being that no matter how many coats of eggshell flat or semigloss you apply youl never be able to hide it

Look at the wall side on and youl see the spackeling no matter what

use hot mud or mix up sheet rock powder with water and apply a can of texture if the wall has texture if not just use the mud and sand with a sanding block from any paint store

    Excellent!

    Congratulation.

Kilz is good stuff, as is the Zinser primer.

You didn't mention if the house had any smoke smell, I assume not. If it *does* have any smoker smell in it do yourself a favor and prime with Kilz Original Oil Based primer.

It stinks like hell when you first apply it, but it is the only thing that will lock out the smell seeping from the walls. Smoke/nicotine/etc will "come out" and pass right through water based primers.

Put up with the oil smell for a few days (putting top coat of paint on helps a lot) and you will be glad you did (maybe not, but you wont' be sad you didn't three months later)

It is perfectly fine to apply any old standard latex/water based paints over Kilz Original.

Also don't save money on cheap paint for the walls inside. It's one of those things where your "savings" go out the window when your paints sucks balls two years later.

I've had good luck with Behr from Home Depot for inside (outside I prefer something else)

The stuff WalMart sells in the plastic buckets as "Kilz casual paint" or something like that is made by the same company that makes Behr. It's an amazingly good paint for the price, I used the flat to paint some hallway walls and it has held up amazingly!

For $20 a gallon or so it rocks.

Behr -- they usually run glossier than others. I find their eggshell to be a bit more glossy than others.

One last thing. If you plan on using a RED color (popular for dining rooms, kitchens, makes a great "eating, talking" color as it excites the senses) USE A RED PRIMER FIRST!!! Otherwise you will be applying ten coats of paint to make it look right.

+1 on his advice, especially the glossy observation about Behr paints. I have gone back to satin from eggshell as long as I use theirs.

And, congrats and take time to enjoy. Prioritize your projects, complete one, and then move on to another.

Agreed! I'm 23 and I'm a couple years away from getting a house. The wife and I tried to get a house last summer, but it didn't work out for us. Now we're going to go ahead and wait as there's a good possibility of us having to move next year.
