Whether you want it or not, NBC is serious about remaking the classic James Garner TV series.

To me, I'd think it's much more of a challenge to recreate such a classic character. As stated in the article, there're certain expectations for the character and it is almost always a failure to recreate such a character so identified with a specific actor.

Even now, whenever I see William Shatner, I think of Captain Kirk.

That's just wrong. James Garner IS Rockford like Tom Selleck IS Magnum P.I.
I could maybe see doing it as a Son of Rockford but without Garner it will not work. Some TV characters are so iconic they should NEVER be resurrected.

On the whole, I agree....although there seems to be not as much "hate" for the reboot of "Star Trek" with the new Captain Kirk.

I wonder what James Garner has to say about the new "Rockford".

You make a good point. I went into the theater expecting to hate the new Kirk, Spock, Bones etc. and came out totally pleasantly surprised and fully accepting of the new faces on old characters.

This is a tough one because James Garner is so associated with the Jim Rockford character...I don't know, I don't think I'm feeling it. A Rockford movie maybe, a Rockford files TV series? Nope.

Maybe they could try resurrecting the Jackie Gleason Show? Louie Anderson could play Ralph. lol

The next remake will be Sanford & Son staring Eddie Murphy as Fred Sanford, Lamonte Sanford, Esther, Rollo, Bubba, and Donna. In the original series, the Sanfords owned and operated a junk yard in rough Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, but in the remake they will own a solar panel installation company in the San Fernando Valley.

I have to say.. that in the past 10 years the network companies haven't had much original programming. I think reviving the Rockford Files is not a good idea. some shows can only survive in the decade they were designed for. Yeah even if it's updated for today's viewing audience.. people don't want to see a show they used to watch 30 yrs ago.

Why then don't they revive Cop Rock. Google it if you're to young to remember Cop Rock. ;)

Cop Rock is an American musical police drama series that aired on ABC in 1990. The show, a police drama presented as a musical, was created by Steven Bochco, who also served as executive producer. Cop Rock has been cited as one of the worst television series, ranking #8 on TV Guide's TV Guide's List of the 50 Worst TV Shows of All Time list in 2002.[1]

Agreed... watching reruns of an iconic show like "Dallas" plays out today like a badly acted and poorly written sitcom.

Isn't there a feature of "Dallas" being planned, with John Travolta and J. Lo?

Actually, I think John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are in this one. It will be a musical production similar to Mama-Mia, using music of from the late 70's and 80's to tell the story. It will also give the iconic couple a chance to star in something else together...

Nope....Did not like it when I did see it years ago and have no intrest in seeing a remake.

I am really starting to not like seeing all these remakes of old shows. I guess writers have run out of ideas.

Certain shows should NOT be remade. This is one of them. The other that comes to mind is Barney Miller.
Shows like HI5-0, Policewoman, etc, yeah, you can get away with it, but not Rockford Files. NFW.

Looks like the remake of Rockford is dead (go to middle of page to see news....)

The remake of The Rockford Files is apparently dead at NBC. The show got a lot of criticism for trying to replace legend James Garner with Dermot Mulroney, but given that half the people who watched the original are now dead, I didn't think it was that big of a problem. The pilot was allegedly re-shot and re-cut so many times that it was an unrecognizable mess of what it used to be. Kind of like Heidi Montag.

I'm glad the new Rockford Files will not be seeing the light of day. Trying to reboot an iconic, and beloved, character that was played to perfection by an equally iconic actor like James Garner is destined to fail.

Well, that may be, but look at how Picard managed to follow on the heels of Kirk in Star Trek! The difference is, I suppose, that he wasn't even trying to be Kirk
