CD/DVD Tray won't stay closed.

So, being in IT you might understand how I'm usually reluctant to throw in the towel and ask for help on a forum, but my research and attempts to resolve this issue have brought me here to seek assistance.

I have a Polk Audio I-Sonic v.1 from 2005/2006 and it has issues about once a year or so. Last year we sent it in for repair again for display artifacts that obscured anything the system was trying to tell us, and then it seemed to crash altogether. It was repaired and returned fairly quickly, so I am in fact a very happy Polk Audio owner, given how prompt and effective the service has been.

Currently I am having an issue with the cd/dvd tray not staying closed. I turn the system on and switch to the cd/dvd menu where it promptly starts trying to read a cd (even if there isn't one in there) and then says something to the effect of --tray open-- and then it opens. I put a cd in the tray and then close it/hit play/hit the tray open/close button and it closes. It then pauses for about 1 to 2 seconds and says --tray open-- again, then opens.

It doesn't seem to matter what cd or dvd I put into it. I've tried burned cd's, officially marketed cd's, dvd's and so on. I even try not putting a cd or dvd in at all and it still does it.

The only way to keep it closed as far as I can tell is to turn the I-Sonic off. It then closes and goes about it's business of being an alarm clock and nothing more.

I read one post that recommended unplugging the system, and there was mention of leaving it unplugged. I unplugged it for 5 minutes and then plugged it back in with no change in system performance.

I am going to leave it unplugged overnight to see if that may resolve the issue. Oh! and my wife says that she thought it was uncharacteristically warm to the touch when she was trying to repair it before I started my efforts to repair it. It is still somewhat warm to the touch, especially in the back left region of the unit.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

~Mark

I think he already knows about Polk CS, as he indicated he's used it in the past and has had good results. My guess is he's on here looking from any ideas us other guys may have, before he contacts support...

Indeed, that is correct. I was hoping to discover some bit of information that might help me quickly resolve the situation.

If my issue does not in fact have a good solution without contacting customer service, then that will be the next step. Thank you for the suggestion.

typically consumer electronics are built to be serviced by qualified trained personnel and specialized training provided only by the original manufacturer.
Then even more specialization for individual product lines sometimes having custom tools and procedures and an ample spare parts that is available.
Perhaps an extended service warranty coverage once the repair is completed.

Your issue with the tray could be (total guess) a micro-switch either mechanical or electrical/optical. Schematic diagram and service manual would be helpful
and access to a problem database which may be available to an authorized service facility.

Good Luck. Let us know .... I'm curious to know the final outcome and root cause

    One question...

Have you always used the button to close the disc drawer, or do you just push the drawer closed? Pushing it closed constantly can cause issues like this. That's why you should always use the button to close the drawer.

Sorry if that's not the case...but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Hmm, interesting point Comfortablycurt. My wife usually handles the actual changing of cd's in the device, but we pretty much put a cd in and leave it in for a month or two at a time. I would say the tray is intentionally opened about fifteen times a year.
