I used to own a 1971 Westphalia vw bus (pop top camper for those not in the know). I built a nice 2176cc engine for it, dyno'd at 163hp 188ftlbs at the flywheel. Mind you in 1971 these things were rated at about 50ish hp...more then 3x the stock HP is HUGE. Used all the right parts...berg, cb performance, engle, scat..running some Italian weber 48 IDA carbs. I adapted cruise control from a mkII jetta to that thing, would cruise down I5 at a steady 90mph no problems with alot more to give. Ran it down the quater once, got a 16.49 time slip here somewheres (probably could have been quicker but Im not super experienced at the track). awesome ride. It had everything i needed plus a sink and a bed.

oh and it had some polk speakers and a pioneer deck.

That's a odd E.T. to MPH ratio, it must come out of the hole hard and die up top.

Danny, do you have a link with more info?

EDIT: http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/06/vw-van/ No additional info, oh well.

I so agree. I owned a 1987 Buick Turbo T ( Grand National) that in stock form went 13.68 @102mph on Good Year Factory Gator tires 215/65R15. Then When I Put a new T4 Turbo modded , Port polished the intake and exhaust , 3 inch down pipe , 40lb Blue strip Injectors , Muscle Fuel pump , Dutweiler Intercooler factory replacement , Dutweiler Transmisson , Replacement Drive shaft U joints with better bearings , Drive shaft loop , Rear coil spring Air bags actually just ran the right side , Koni shocks , removed the front sway bar , Had a custom Chip programmed for the exact setup on the car and it went 11.77@122mph on M&H racemaster Street slicks at 26x10x15. This was all done on the factory Engine , all bolt on's no cam or Piston work. I even had the factoy rear in a 3.42 posi. Car had Working air and Stereo , power everything. O and all the chrome I had under the hood made it faster LOL.
I miss that car as I sold it years ago as my wife made me get rid of it as it just sat here and I didn't drive it. We needed the money for the house and she made sure we spent every single penny. One day I would love to find another one or get a 1989 Turbo Trans am with the Grand National engine in it ( 1989 pacecar). A buddy of mine still has one and if he would ever sell it( he owned it since brand new) I want first crack at it.
