Anyone modified the wiring of SDA-1C

I am concidering ditching (NOT throwing away) the SDA cable and wire the SDA drivers in parallel with the stereo drivers. I did identify the fact that each SDA driver is wired in series as well as the stereo drivers.

This will be just a trial run and may not be permanent.

Comments?

Wouldn't this negate the SDA effect?

Why? Well, I prefer standard stereo sound and I would expect more output from all four drivers as opposed to just the two stereo drivers.

Remember, this is just a trial and I may not like the result.

For one I'm thinking you will end up with a frequency balance problem with all 4 drivers operating as the stereo array because the midrange and bass levels will be increased but the tweeters level will not have changed.

Yeah, I did concider the output of the mid/mid bass would be higher. I would use my equalizer to smooth this out.

    Thanks!

Sell them and get conventional speakers. The x-overs are designed to run the dimensional drivers over a very specific freq range. Simply disconnecting them will not get you what you desire.

Just to add, while the schematic shows the midbass's for both the DA and SA sections operate over the exact same range ,(the difference in crossover values is due to a parallel connection for one array and series for the other) paralleling the two sections will likely result in a very low impedance.

I see the SDA drivers are in parallel, I would definitely wire them in series.

But then the crossover frequency will change due to it seeing a different load.

This is what I intend to do:
The Stereo drivers wired in series.
The SDA drivers wired in series.
Then wire the SDA drivers in parallel with the Stereo drivers.
The SDA drivers will be dis-connected from the SDA part of the crossover.

What you are proposing would only work (without shifting the crossover frequency) if the impedance of the four drivers combined had the same impedance as that of the two series connected SA drivers.Otherwise you would have to duplicate the crossover of the SA section for use with the DA pair and connect them in series, then connect both the SA and DA sections in parallel. In other words not a simple fix.

I see that the midbass drivers in each section are different models (6510's 6511's,)Anyone know the what differences are between them? impedance? sensitivity? or both?

The exact information is proprietary, but that's a very good guess. The voice coils on some of the MW drivers are wound differently as well.

    I don't need anymore speakers.

You have to understand... what you're proposing to this forum is, for the lack of a better word, blasphemy. SDAs were specially designed to be run the way they are wired.

There is a reason there are not many speakers out there made with 4 like drivers side by side. If you prefer standard stereo, there is absolutely no purpose in going through this work. Your Legacy Audios are on a vertical axis FOR A REASON... does this make sense?

If you're dying to tear open the SDAs... do so to upgrade the crossovers or something. What you're suggesting is like converting a sports car to diesel, just because you prefer diesel.

No need to, they are staying here as Polk designed them. BTW they are in immaculent shape with the RD tweeters.

I probably should have asked what a non SDA speaker with similar sound to the 1C I could aquire. Looking at Polks line-up, The Monitobr 12 seems to be a good choice.
