I'm shocked to discover you disagreeing with me on a computer issue! SHOCKED!

This was admittedly 6+ years ago, so maybe they have improved, but I threw away enough money on them and my Linksys has been working just fine since.

I believe heat was the cause of the failures. None of the routers survived 90+ degree weather, especially in a house with no central A/C.

This one is in a cooler location. Been working fine so far.

Well I have central AC, but I try to keep the house around 79f as my electric bill was $380 last month. And before you say I need a new AC unit, yes it's NEW.

Now all my network stuff is in a closet which I call IP closet, and they are about 8ft from the floor so it could be even a little more hot there. I also feel my issues are a heat thing, so today I bought a muffin 12vdc fan to blow some air around them, and I will but the DD-WRT software on it. If not then I'm done with these wireless hubs, I buy D-links stuff if needed.

Holy crap, maybe you need better insulation!

My electric bill 1 year ago was 350, this year 120

what a world of difference insulation makes.

+1 on swapping out the Linksys firmware for DD-WRT. Great alternative, and it seriously helped with my crashes. Mine runs 24/7 and hasn't given me an issue in years.

D-Link is a fine alternative though; I like their products.

But Belkin? The only routers worse than Belkins are Netgears, at least on the lower-end consumer stuff. I had THREE of those little grey Belkin routers (don't remember the model numbers) and they were ALL buggy as ****.

Kinda funny, whenever I mention how good of luck I've had with the Belkin Pre-N routers theres always somebody that puts them down...

I wouldn't touch D-link if my life depended on it. I went through 3 of their wired and wireless routers in less than 2 years. I finally purchased a WRT54G several years ago and its been rock solid.

But as some others have mentioned, quality of manufacturing can go up or down...

    DD-WRT software update?

When I go there I have 2 files for v8.0?

    dd_wrt.v24_mirco_generic.bin 2009-06-03 1.68mb

    or

    dd_wrt.v24_mirco_olsrd_generic.bin 2009-06-03 1.66mb

    Which one do I download?

Micro generic is fine, but totally read the Readme on installation. It is a 2 part deal with the ones like yours with vxworks. More complicated procedure than just telling the factory firmware to update flash. You have to use vxworkskiller to pre-flash.

I just went by there for the 1st time in a while, and they've really upgraded the site and wiki. Here's the url instructions for your version:

Well first off Thanks John for the link it helped immensely.

Now the questions at first thinking all was well but had some issues which may have been port 4 and the wireless connections. I could "See" the network ping the network but nothing else, acted as it was going to a website but then nothing. Read that port 4 and wireless could be an issue, and needed a CFE updater... so I did a firmware upgrade which killed it. Had to do a TFTP vxworkskiller to wake it up enough to do the dd-wrt software thing. But funny now all things are working so confused if I need or how I should do the CFE updater software thing.

Other questions the transmitter output is 70mw to 241mw. Default was 70mw, but what was the original output? I needed to push it at 200mw to get a strong received. I hate to blow it up, so I'm pushing it to much?

I not sure what the temperature was around these electronics, but I can say it felt around 90f. So I put a fan to cool those hubs, modems and everything is cooler right now.

I've been using a WRT54G for 4 years with no problems. Perhaps the problem is with your modem this time.

I have nearly 5 years on mine at home and countless WRT54G's at customer sites. I can't remember the last time one failed.

Joe, I have 2 of these routers in my house running flawlessly. One of them for over 3 years now. I think you may have some other issues than the router. Now the damn cheap **** DSL modems are another story. Have went through at least 5 in the last few years.

I picked up 3 more of these for $3 each since last time. They all seem to work well flashed with the newest DD-WRT. I'm running a multiple repeater setup in my house and I get coverage everywhere.

Yes love WRT-DD no issues the router is great now, didn't like their consumer software, but their business software is great. Now WRT-DD is great also, I just couldn't get an update site before the other link http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/How...h_the_WRT54Gv8 How do you get that great site for updating a router without this link?

Ok sorry I'm not always clear, I know that is my issue at times. I don't take any offense about it, since I know for a fact I get pissed also when I read some of my post later. Sometimes my head is clearer and feel I need to edit a post to clear it up some, but since I can't edit and this fact gets me to think this forum sucks. But understand me I love everyone here, the people here keeps me here.

i have the linksys wrt54gl and i've had ww-drt on it for a few years now. still i have issues abundant with my networking. one day it's fine, then the next, not so much. i'm scrapping that shitt out and going with two dlink dgs-2208 gigabit switches so i can get my 2 xbox 360's, 2 playstations, 2 hd dvd players (not that toshiba is updating them anymore via internet), a panasonic bluray player and a wii connected to the internet and to each other without the hassle. of course, the only "gigabit" speeds i'll be seeing is from my main computer to my 2 ps3's. ps3 does gigabit and so does my main pc rig. my other two computers are not gigabit.

question becomes, when will i be willing to crawl through my attic and run the main length of cat6 cable??? thank god it's not summertime!
