I think I need to replace my router again, it keeps dropping my broadband connection. My last one would drop the wireless connection output, by now this one is a different issue all together. It seems these router have a limited lifespan, Linksys / Cisco home stuff is nothing like the commercial stuff

I have 6 WRT54G's and they all work wonderfully. First thing I do when I get them is dump DD-WRT on them so they don't have the log full error.

By default the WRT54G keeps a log of all incoming and outgoing connections for like a week. The problem is that if you make a lot of connections (such as bitorrent), the log will fill up and crash the router. The new firmware makes it more stable by fixing that problem, as well as quite a few others. Not to mention it adds QoS (quality of service) so that when you're downloading and uploading a lot, you can still set HTTP as a premium service and it will not lag.

I've been using a WRT54G for 4 years with no problems. Perhaps the problem is with your modem this time.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

I also use DD-WRT on the same router and MUCH prefer it to the standard firmware. One great feature is it lets you adjust the watts for your wireless signal output, therefore effectively letting you increase your range - you gotta ba careful with that feature because you can cook it, but that's why I switched and it works great!

    Hello

Belkin made this router when the "pre-n" craze first started. I've had zero issues with this router, its on 24/7, never have to restart it. Its feeding three towers, a 360, and wireless its feeding a ps3, psp, laptop, and directv on demand.

Every time I see people having router issues I point them to this router....continue to pull your hair out with other routers...or live in peace....your call....

I just picked up a D-Link Xtreme N Wireless-N Gigabit Router about 5 or so months ago. Had an old Lynksys and it kept locking up on me when more than one source was pulling a signal off of it. With the D-Link I have 2 PS3's, an XBox 360, and a laptop usually on at the same time and no issues what so ever. For around $100 bucks, you can't beat it IMO.

I always wonder if this is an issue living in Florida. The unit is very warm, my dsl modem is under a hub also, so this isn't very cool either. My units seem to live for 18-24 months before they **** the bed. ;) The only I think I could do is add a fan to try to keep them cool.

I'm going to mod my WRT54G with an SD card slot and a fan... It'll probably keep it stable forever. I was running two 1 watt amps (in and out) for a long while.

The airport next to me was NOT happy.

+1 on swapping out the Linksys firmware for DD-WRT. Great alternative, and it seriously helped with my crashes. Mine runs 24/7 and hasn't given me an issue in years.

D-Link is a fine alternative though; I like their products.

But Belkin? The only routers worse than Belkins are Netgears, at least on the lower-end consumer stuff. I had THREE of those little grey Belkin routers (don't remember the model numbers) and they were ALL buggy as ****.

I never liked the old belkin routers. Constant crashes.

The newer stuff is great. The only DLINK i've ever liked was that gaming router. It was actually one of the best of all time. The extra ram really made it bulletproof.

    http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php

It's a linux based open-source (aftermarket) firmware for many different router models. The most popular is the Linksys WRT54G, which was originally linux based which made it easy to change the firmware.

DD-WRT is just one flavor like Tomato, that gives many more options and usually stabilizes the router. Check out the website. Usually doing this voids your warranty, however, not that it matters.

I have a Netgear router that has been working great ever since I switched from Linksys.

It's been working for 4 years now. Seems to not be as affected by heat, although I do put it in a cool location.

This was admittedly 6+ years ago, so maybe they have improved, but I threw away enough money on them and my Linksys has been working just fine since.

I believe they've all gotten better over the years.

Back in the day...when WRT54G first came out, they were the best, with the most ram. Belkin sucked, Dlink sucked. Netgear was not bad - it was actually made of steel.

As time went on Belkin still was horrible until their N series came out and then they hit a sweet spot. Dlink got their gaming router and has had success. Netgear really hasn't gone anywhere. Neither high nor low. Linksys has gone from high to low back to about average. Their WRT54G v5 was horrible, running the non linux vxworks that crashed multiple times daily.

I like my WRT54G. A lot of interesting info about this router in this thread, will check my firmware status when I'll get home in a couple of weeks.
Btw, I tried Belkin, Netgear, Microsoft (yes, they make one) and D-Link routers, and regarding area coverage, strength, signal quality and overall impresseion - I like this router the most.

Disneyjoe has v.8, so that's going to have vxworks and a tiny NVRAM also. They have a version of dd-wrt for flashing over vxworks, but it's dicier. I flashed a v5 router just to see if I could make it a wireless repeater for my main router.

Pretty cool stuff old Brainslayer has added in.

i had the Microsoft ones too! They were actually the EASIEST to set up, unfortunately their range was not so great. Overall the router had zero options but worked when i needed it to.

My preference now is the WRT54GS or GL. They aren't gimped like the v5 and above.
