You guys fail to realize that Bose is a bunch of excellent Marketers!
I can’t tell you how many times in the past I almost bought one of their products because their “arguments” were compelling and well presented.
If I didn’t stumble across good information, I would have been blissfully ignorant regarding quality audio.
Most Mid/Hi - Fi Marketers are horrible. Many of the websites are quick to direct you to a distributor without making a compelling argument for why you should even consider their product.
I can say that Polk is one of the better companies when it comes to “converting the uninitiated.” I can attribute this to the friendly website/forum and clearly written enclosed registration/welcome materials received with products. IMO, Polk communications are written in a way that doesn’t presume that everyone is extremely knowledgeable about quality audio. If Bose did manufacture hi-end quality separates, I’ll bet they would know how to dominate the market.

Come on guys, we don't have to go through this with bose again.. Look, I think bose speakers sucks as much of the rest of you but lets face it, there are two things most casual people want.... small and easy to use/setup. And thats was bose gives them. And they have really good marketing to boot.

I don't remember the late 70's stuff (901, 301) being that bad (especially if you got caught up in the disco craze). You definitely had to have the right environment for them. I has a couple brain-cell deficient hippie friends that replaced their home-built speakers with 901's and I definitely thought it was a step up. Paper-cone speakers were not that uncommon. Then technology came along and Bose never really got into that too much. Maybe that's when they decided that the budget had to go to either Marketing or R & D. Been downhill ever since.

So seriously what is it, all Bose products in general? Or specific product lines?
Headphones? In-ear phones? Outdoor speakers? Home Theater? Computer? Wave? SoundDock? Do they have a high(er) end stereo offering?

In all honesty my first intro to Polk was the crappy P.O.S. computer speakers that came with my computer years ago. I absolutely avoided them as a serious company (I kow you can't judge a book...)-That and the only Polk speakers I ever saw were the beatup laminated ones in CC. I just find it hard to believe that any well established company can make nothing but crap and still be in business (pocket fisherman aside ;)). Even M# has some good products (regardless of the marketing hype and excessive pricing).

Seems to me most are up in arms about the tiny speakers along with the Acoustimass module.

I think I'd say that almost any Polk speaker CC carried would beat the comparable BOSE product in the same price range in the same CC. And that includes the R series bookshelves....I've actually done that listening test years ago.

Headphones. Can you really compare any Bose phones to comparable Sennheiser or Grado and choose Bose?

Acoustimass modules are Bose's bread and butter....take a simple TSI series set up with a 5-600 dollar Polk sub...and tell me that doesn't blow the Bose modules away?

I could go on, but those are just a few examples. Those laminate Polk speakers have more R&D behind them then anything Bose has done in years.

I defer to doro....for more info....on Polk R&D, here! It's not that I'm bashing Bose...I'm just wondering what have the 'done' recently? As someone said above...they've been left behind....paper cones and cone tweeters...in the 21st century...?

I don’t think the primary gripe with Bose is that everything they make is necessarily 100 percent junk (it isn’t) but rather that its products are “junk relative to price and advertised performance”. You mentioned inexpensive Polk computer speakers and another good example might be Logitech computer speakers. Neither of those two products purports to be astounding technological breakthroughs resulting from leading edge R & D and the highest quality parts available. There is nothing at all wrong with producing an inexpensive product that performs well or better than similar products in that general purpose & price category.

The rub comes in when low-quality parts, suspect co-opted patents (questionable at best), and misleading advertising are combined with staged / manipulated demonstrations and a wildly inflated price. The product itself may not be “crap” when compared to products of similar construction and performance.

Of course, this industry (hobby?) is full of over-priced products delivering questionable and/or unverifiable sonic benefits so maybe we shouldn’t be too hard on Bose. I’ll bet that most of the buyers of Bose say, “it sounds good to me”. Isn’t that what we all say is the true test of value in this hobby?

I agree Marty, I will say I have a neighbor with a 123 system, I got really sick of him saying how good it sounded with Iron Man, we set it up on my "entry" level system, needless to say he dosen't say too much about his Bose when i'm around. Ive even showed him some of the CP members systems in the showcase. He never knew there was anything other than Bose.

Well said then...so its more a Brand issue based on marketing practices moreso than the product itself (when compared with like products). Kinda like MO#$%.

I never said they probably couldn't be beaten in a side by side comparison with equal or even lesser products, just wanted to be clear on exactly what it was that most despised. Its far to common on CP to brand bash every little thing about another company's product based on either heresay, or one's opinions on the company's marketing practices' or hell, even if some company is getting rave reviews and they don't like it. I am a man after truth, not opinionated heresay. That is all.

my dad bought bose 3-2-1 ii last yr on boxing day with 60%(or 70%cant remember) off. i didnt know anything abt HT but i know it is not possible to let 2.1 channel speaker fullfill ur back like 5.1 does in physics. anyway i have to say it sound very good, because my parents use them 95% of time watching TV, the dialog is very clear and sweet, which i think its the most important for TV watching, and becasue of that, I didnt have a chance to listen how they sound in music and HT. but they r very happy about the purchase ($500~600 CAD something cant remember).
but my dad is keep bashing me being stupid to get a seperate receiver and speakers instead of getting a bose set on boxing day like him, which really start get annoying :D

Yes, I used to think bose was the best place in the world until I started comparing prices! I recently bought a pair of noise cancelling headphones and tried out BOSE's and they were amazing but were $300 so i found some Panasonic ones for $100. They work just fine! screw bose!
