One of the most overated speakers made in my opinion. Again, the old saying " No high's ,no low's, it must be Bose " I owned a set of AM5's back in the nighties and I was so glad to sell them (And got a decent price!)
Sorry to you Bose owners but they really do suck!!!!!:(

BOSE is truly the epitome of audiophile sound. They're supposed to be the best...right? One day I'll throw out my entire rig and replace it with BOSE equipment...but I don't think I'm quite ready to move to that level of audiophilia yet. Maybe one day...

I think for your needs Bose might be the best choice.;)... Take her to Best buy and listen to Bose, then to the Polk audio setup, and both your questions will be answered. To me Bose just sounds small, flat and lifeless-perfect for mp3, but for real sound you need a real speaker.

Because they're overpriced, cheaply produced pieces of crap. The only reason that they sound good in the demo rooms at the store, is because they have about 30,000 dollars worth of equipment and room treatment driving them. Most people, obviously, aren't going to have that same environment at home.

Here's a big article that goes very in depth about it.

    http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html

The materials used in the construction process are about as cheap as they could possibly be.

Here are some interesting numbers on the Acoustimass system.

The frequency response of the Acoustimass satellite speakers-
    280hz-13.3khz @ +/- 10.5 db

The frequency response of the Acoustimass Bass Module ("subwoofer")
    46hz-202hz @ +/- 2.3 db

Read those numbers...So, the subwoofer is missing all of the information below 46hz, which is where a lot of bass is located, as per their targeted HT customer.

The subwoofer then goes up to about 202hz, which is a very high crossover for a subwoofer. It's necessary though, due to the fact...

....That the satellites will only go as low as 280hz. So, everything between 202hz and 280hz just gets completely eliminated from the soundtrack. The subwoofer has to be crossed over so high to add a little bit of weight to the mid-range, and allude you away from the fact that you're missing a big section OF the mid-range.

Not to mention that with the +/- 10.5 db rating of the satellites, they're going to be running out of steam by the time they get down that low.

The satellites top out at 13.3khz. The human ear can hear up to 20khz. So, you're missing a lot of information up high too.

Bose basically draws on their reputation. They advertise more than any other audio company out there. You can go through just about any magazine on the face of the planet and find an ad for Bose. I've never seen Polk Audio advertising in Car & Driver or Road & Track...nor have I seen them in any non-audio magazines for that matter. I've seen Bose in just about every magazine around...on TV, their huge displays at different stores...

Bose relies on the uneducated consumer that wants to buy a product because of the name on it.

Read that article I posted. There are many many other reasons that Bose sucks.

I can't say I've ever seen a Bose demo setup in a treated room or with any special equipment driving them. I have only ever seen them setup in the aisles of the big Box stores. Well I know I don't have a big open warehouse style environment at my house.

You're assuming that BB actually setup the Polks properly. Actually I don't think I've ever seen any Polk's setup in any of the Magnolia's. Hmmm.

They don't have those setups at all of the locations.

At a lot of the bigger stores though, they have Bose setup in a dedicated room that has very extensive acoustic treatment, that was designed specifically to make the Bose system sound good. All of the other brands are relegated to the aisle setups though.

I believe they market to the customer who knows nothing about Home Theater and speakers. And they have WAF going for them.
Bose makes dealers sign an agreement to not compare their products with any others, in any sort of a "live" demonstration
Bose refuses to publish any sort of frequency response specifications on their products(and many other specs)
I also had a pair of 501's. No imaging to speak of, no midrange, no real bass. terrible speaker. Since their days of the 901's they ahave been going down hill in build quality and terrible frequency response. Go online and check the tests that have been done for their lack of reproducing at differant frequencies......but the wifes do like them because " they fit in" :D:D:D

There's two parts to that mall-you have to walk outside and cross a street to get to the other part. I believe they were in the same area (The Court?) as Macy's, Mortons, The Cheescake Factory, and Cartier. Just outside of Needless Markup.

I have to say that I was suckerd into thinking that this 123 system was something special and unique . Even olivia munn from G4 tv's Attack Of The Show has a bose system and has commented many times how awesome it is

one day.....Dr. Klipsch running into Dr. Bose at the airport.

Dr. Klipsch sees Dr. Bose, cups hands in front of mouth and yells “Hello Dr Bose”.

In non-physical bashing, the term is used to imply that a verbal or critical attack is similarly unacceptable and similarly predjudicial. Use of the term in this manner is an abusive ad hominem action, used to denounce the attack and admonish the attackers by comparing them to perpetrators of physical bashing.

    ooooops.... My Bad.

    Curt,

Where did you GET SPECS on BOSE speakers...that's like level 1000 security clearance info at Bose.

As everyone knows Bose 'refuses' to list their specs anywhere...the argument is, in some ways not terrible, that stats don't represent or mean much...now when it comes to really good equipment there is a 'note' of truth to that in terms of the subjective element in audio...and we've seen those threads with regard to speaker wires and I/Cs etc. And also as concerns 'synergy' and so on.

But can that apply to Bose? The Dr. Klipsch and Dr. Bose story was, at least, amusing. And as for Bose bashing...I'm sure they consider 'this' PUBLICITY, as if they need it, and they laugh 'all the way to their Bank'! All the Bose talk on a site like this will have NO EFFECT whatsoever on the giant Bose advertising machine and the hypnotic effect it has on the general public. So, I don't really think that's an issue. Bose will be here long after I'm gone!
