Get used to it, as we will see more of the same kind of crap. The government is here to make our decisions for us, as we are too stupid to make our own.

    WOLF!
Now, officials in Washington and elsewhere are telling residents to either take that old ride to the car wash, or hold the soap and wash the car over gravel or grass to filter the dirty water.

They're just trying to keep the crap out of the storm drains, which empty where? Your rivers.
Hold the soap?, that's just good advice where ever you shower.:p

It's another law that is basically unenforceable.

I posted this on a car forum of mine, which should get the blood boiling. It's amazing to me that the opinions of a select few seem to outweigh the vast majority. As long as people live in this world, they will infringe in some way on the environment. What exactly is their solution?

Those that value the finish on their vehicles? The soap helps keep the finish from scratching as you rub the dirt around with the wash rag. It acts as a lubricant.

While I do agree with the concept of environmental stewardship, I do not agree with the notion that the earth is so fragile and delicate that it cannot take care of itself. An example here would be the Exxon Valdez disaster. This no doubt was an eccological catastrophy of epic proportion. We set off on a heroic effort to restore the pristine coastlines of Alaska and save as many animals as possible from death.

It turns out however that the efforts of man to restore these lands to their original state FAILED wherever man put his hands to even try to set things right. The reason is that the chemicals used to remove the oil encapsulated it is a substance that the environment cannot break down as easily as if it were simply left alone. In areas that man made no attempt to clean, all traces of the disaster were removed in less than ten years.

Bottom line for me is to be responsible, but to assume that the planet will perish because of our activities is absurd. Man's efforts are insignificant when compared to the planet's ability to care for herself. Earth has been life sustaining for 3.7 billion years and will be just fine, with or without our help.

Even washing a car without soap or with biodegradable soap is a no-no if the water runs off into storm drains, because it still picks up oil, grease and metals from the vehicle's brake pads.

Doesn't rain have the same effect?

In Germany you are not allowed to wash your car unless you go to a carwash or you use one of the automatic carwashes at the gas station. The automatic carwashes there are about 20 euro for the base wash so I still handwash my truck but I have to do it at the carwash. It sucks but it's better than a ticket for 1000 euros (10 million dollars) and they DO enforce it.

1000 euros is about 1395 dollars, no where near 10 million. Still an outrageous fine for washing a car.

Notice that the article says nothing about "banning" carwashing. It simply says that you need to do it in a location where the water won't reach the storm drain, or will be filtered before reaching the storm drain. On the grass, or on gravel are two examples. I don't see anything to horrible about this.

All of that soap IS terrible for our rivers and streams. I kind of enjoy having clean water(as if there is any anymore), on this planet. I'm sure the millions upon millions of life forms that call that water home would kind of appreciate it too.

Yes, we can. The evaporative method, is what we used on board ship.

desalination process is used in many parts of the globe

desalination produces drinking water by removing dissolved salts and impurities from seawater or brackish water.

Evaporative and Reverse Osmosis are a couple examples of the methods used
