ok, first off. i gotta say I don't want to offend anyone here, and I hope this doesn't.. But, are you alone with your passion for audio? Be it home theater or two channel or multichannel? Does your wife, husband, domestic partner, lover, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc.. share your enthusiasm or are they annoyed that you continually upgrade this or that as you see fit?

I'll start this off, for the record, my partner doesn't understand the need and thrill of upgrading to new interconnects or a new sub i'd like to have. By far I am the guy who takes care of all audio purchases when it comes to electronics. Whats you're situation at home? Just curious, I have a feeling I know the answer, but i'm interested in knowing anyway. Do you have disagreements with your partner over audio electronics?

thanks, Al the pal

My Mom continuously asks me after she purchases the item for me if it was worth it. I am like, ask me that again when I play it at 90+ db; that way I can give you an accurate answer. She also complains that she often can not hear, or more the less concentrate on her movies of the constant 'noise' the subwoofer causes on the walls. This vibration causing a substanual amount of noise that causes a persistant stand point in the outter limits of my bedroom. Also, I think her favorite line to me is, "TURN IT DOWN." My sister, also does not like my loudness, and thinks I personally waste all my money. She on the other hand just bangs on the walls till I turn it down. Other than that, as long as I pay for it my mom or sister does not care.

My dad doesn't care.... we sometimes have competitions to see who's system will drown out the others :-). I always win on that one. My sister is at college (and when she's home... i just ignore her) and my brother has his own place :-).

My grandparents - (reading newspaper) "8 speaker stereo with sub-wufer, whatever the hell that is."
My parents - "Sound coming from in between the speakers? Hah!"
My friends - "But why do you need those extra speakers in the back?"
Me - "Hmm... maybe I should measure those cable lengths one more time."

I think that pretty well sums it up.

Yes and no. My dad likes it but if I don't play music he likes, he ****. My mom can't understand it and gets mad at me when I play it too loud. My brother likes it but he is never home. My girlfriend likes it but she just likes boomboom bass so she does and she doesn't. She does want a home theater for our house when we get one though so, bonus there.

    Dude touchy subject.

My wife hates that I upgrade like a madman.Just over the last 4 years,I have owned 4 receivers and one pair of seperates and a single power amp.I even had 3 different TV's in the livingroom where my theater gear lives.Thats just the beginning.........

won't go on and on about what I do but I will tell you this,Mrs mantis doesn't approve of any of it.She thinks its a waste of money to constantly buy buy buy.The new theater she is supporting as she knows it's my dream to have a dedicated home theater. My new house was purchased on the agreement that I could have a 9 foot high basement upgrade.

My last upgrade, the B&K avr307,she wasn't real happy for me.She really wants me to wait untill we are all settled in the new house. We have tons of things to buy and she doesn't want me to empty the savings account.Hell man I just spent 3 thousand dollars on our new couch for the livingroom,1400.00 on a chair.Furniture we just got started. The masterbedroom set alone is over 3 grand. We are buying ALL new furniture for all the rooms.Kitchen included. After all said and done,I believe I'll be over 20k poorer.Dude furniture is so expensive. But it makes her happy and I try not to get in her way.We talk about what we are going to do with each room and man, when I get the bill,I feel faint......like now just talking about it.

This Building a new house is stressfull. She doesn't want to have to wait for things due to my toys......I agree. We have been waiting for the house to be finished for 2 years now. It's 99% finished now and they just need to get the rugs/tiles in,and get the services to the house from the front yard/sidewalk area. The ground has been frozen for quit some time, the township has to run there service to the house themselves, they are holding up the build due to it...It sucks.

I did however got away with the house system.I put speakers and keypads all over the house and outdoors. She liked that Idea as we have multiroom where I live now.I also wired a complete network,I might not use it as wireless is so cool and affordable now,but it's there for the use.....

Man I could go on and on about what she thinks is right or wrong with me............audio and video is a big part of my life.

One reason forums like this one and S&V are popular because there aren't a lot of people, in terms of % of the general population, who are into this stuff beyond getting something affordable that works. We have 4 small local hifi shops in my town--one has recently downsized & at least half its former space is taken over by a restaurant. They are the only dealers for NAD, PSB, & Sony ES in town. Another one, which takes trade-ins and is the only local dealer for Mirage, Phase Technology, Parasound, Pioneer Elite, AMC, & MB Quart, appears to be doing well because they shifted towards custom install of HT as their primary service long before it became the dominant trend. The guy who runs it is an audio encyclopedia, but he doesn't even have a dedicated listening rm because they focus on going out to folks houses. Yet another, the place in town with the most high end equipment, never has any customers but me, & is one of the two Marantz dealers in town. The 4th is the local Paradigm dealer, & like all of the above, hardly ever has anyone there.

Meanwhile, Circuit City, Best Buy, & a regional chain called American (where Fireshoes works) are busier, even on their slowest nights, than any of the local places are. American sells the LSi line, Adcom, Denon, & overall a much better line than CC or BB. But it's nonetheless a chain that does not specialize in audio or AV. Best Buy is the most likely to be swarming.

Point being that my profile of the relative popularity of these places probably mirrors the nation as a whole. Thank goodness for these forums!

I feel lucky since my wife is more or less amused by the hobby. She even stripped and cut all the wires when I bi-wired, and before that replaced the copper jumper when my ham fists coudn't get the new wire jumper and the normal wire both in the binding post. She was a little iffy about the SVS until she heard it, and now she wants to demo it when people come over. It's fun when she goes out and rents 'The Fast and the Furious' just to hear it. She has her hobbies, but also tells me she's glad one of mine is audio.

It's funny, Linda is pretty passive on the whole HT rig, that is, until someone comes over that's never experience it, then she is the first to pipe up about showing it off.

    Peace Out~:D
