Some things are essential (food) some thngs are necessary (for our enjoyment) and then some things are a ($$ luxury). -
audio items are essential, food is a necessicity where limitation is to be applied, you eat food and then you eat more, what a waste of audio coin, liquor is essential, but women are a luxury.

cold Beer and good friends are a necessity .... everything else is an accessory

I have now spent approx 6 times what I expected/planned on spending when I first started thinking about a HTIB. If I earned twice as much, I'd probably spend a lot more. The key is to spend what works for you and your budget, regardless of when the improvements become diminishing. If you can't afford to have your car fixed because you spent $3K on an amp, you might want to reevaluate.MAIN: Polk Lsi9s; Polk PSW505; Lsic (in box); Onkyo SR-875; Parasound 2250; Cambridge Audio 740C; LG BD370

a car is certainly something that can be let go for audio, a car can be a perfectly good waste of audio fundage resources.

I personally spent less than 1/2 of what I could have on my last car to enjoy more audio goodies. Way back when I moved into my first house I spent a house payment on a pair of SDA's and had to put the house payment on the credit card. Hey, you gotta have the essentials before wasting money on the house...

That's the spirit of True Audio Addicts.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -
I stole my wifes credit card when she was drunk on saturday and bought some nice speakers
anticipation of death is worse than death itself -
i have seen estimates of raising a child thru college in excess of $200,000
and the tough economy makes it difficult to find a job.
Audio and Home Theater seems inexpensive in comparison -
Walk instead of own a car, don't pay your mortgage, steal your wife's cc, and have your children pay their own way to college,That's the spirit of True Audio Addicts.

I was in full control and it was premeditated. I would do it again next month.

I dunno....it's far to subjective of a subject to put a dollar amount on it, for me, I'm right there. I just don't have the resources and to be honest, the desire, to go any farther up the food chain.
The thing is, for me, it's about creating, or re-creating, that feeling that you got the first time a hifi rig REALLY got you motivated in this hobby. For me, that was hearing "The Truth" at Casa Grande. That was, and remains, my high water mark for hi fidelity experiences.

True use of the Law, excellent, totally hard core. The essentials of audio should always be placed above the house, it can be afterall limited in its necessicity.

I found that in bad times audio equipment is a very liquid asset which led me to the belief that it doesn't matter how much you spend, actually the more the better. For example an amp that you buy used for $5K today can generally be unloaded within a week for $5K whether it is this week or 5 years from now. Almost as good as money in the bank, maybe better since you get to listen to it. Of course this doesn't apply to dated things such as processors or CD players and some other items.

Diminishing returns? I don't worry about it. What concerns me is the value gained of dollar per hour.
Take the total cost of your rig and divide it over the hours you use it per year(s). Now take another hobby or enjoyment, shooting, boating or whatever and find the real cost.
I would that say, boating, if it costs the same amount as your rig, would cost more per hour since your not using it year round in many cases as you can your audio toys.

MM-yea, most sand money washes away with the tide, now tubes, say oooh lala, a great many tubes selling now for way over original asking price, a note of exception for ss, the Esoteric X0-1 seems to be a piece collectors want/seek.
your point is correct though, gear is pretty easy to turn, sometimes you make a bit or lose a bit, but you got to hear it, an extremely joyous time that costs very little considering all the value it brings to life. The boat is extremely fun, but as Hawk says, it sits mostly, but evertime we take her out we have a ball, actually, a great day is:
splashing the salt early, feeling the pull on a line of something stronger than you are, enjoying the day and the view of the occasional hotty my son brings aboard, getting heated up with the fish, then retiring later to the Loft with a cold beverage, cool tunes, and some warm tubes.........ahhhhhh life is good.
