does anyone know what stain would match the rti a speekers? I bought a set of a9's a while back and they were slightly damaged in shipping. The seller agreed to pay for the repair, so I had a carpenter come over and patch the wood. Didn't realize that was the easy part, this poor guy has been over 6 or 7 times the last couple weeks trying to match the color just right- no luck. Does polk sell a touch up stain? Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Was the guy actually a carpenter or a cabinet maker or a restorer? What did he use to fix the damage? What is he trying to use to match the color?

he's a general contractor that does home improvement type work. he used wood putty to fill the gouges. After sanding them they look perfect (besides the color). He's been trying to match the color with different shades of miniwax stain. We've tried a bunch of different shades including cherry, so far the closest match is a color called sedona red. close but not exact. thanks ahead for any advice Jesse

OK, wood putty is fine if you're going to paint over it, but it's not the best choice when working with a translucent color. Wood epoxy is a better choice, comes in a clear plastic tube and kind of looks like a Tootsie roll, but I don't think you'll find at the hardware store. Anyway, too late for that now.

Because wood putty or wood epoxy absorb color differently than actual wood, you'll never get a stain in a can to match the original color. What you need is a furniture touch up guy to work on them. He will have all the right stuff and if he's good, will be able to blend those repairs so that they pretty much disappear. Look in your Yellow Pages under furniture repair, etc.

It's time to let the general contractor off the hook.

thanks f-1. I don't know if it's too late yet, the putty could be sanded back out and re-done. I was a little sceptable(sp?) about the putty he was using. The holes are fairly small, the bigger one about the size of a nickel. I hate to make the guy re-do it, but he will as he knows I'm ANAL about this project. I'd hate to fire him , he's already got a bunch of time involved and is willing to do whatever it takes to get these right. He's a freind of a freind and giving me a pretty good deal.

Dan, there's no point in trying to redo the repairs, that always ends up being a bigger mess than what you started with. I'm sure the guy means well and no slight on him, but he doesn't have the knowledge or materials needed for the job. Pay and thank him for his time, then find someone that does furniture touch up/repairs for a living.

You might consider an upgrade. You can buy wood verneer in very thin (almost paper thin) sheets, and in exotic woods for relatively little money. You could make those speakers look really cool!! I think Vr3mxstyler2k3 did that once.

Locally by me there is Owl Lumber, but I know there are several online resourses for exotic verneers and they don't even have to cost that much. I'll check it out and get back to you. BTW ask Sid, from what I remember seeing he did a kick **** job!!

Here's where I have been buying veneer:
    http://www.tapeease.com/products.htm

I like the peel & stick veneer. Just make sure that the surface is smooth--all the dings filled. Then it needs to be finished; I like polyurethane, but have used Minwax Polycrylic. I don't know if it would stick to an oil finish.

    Cheers, Jim
