Gets me every time.
Listen to the lyrics. If it doesn't choke you up even a teensy bit, you're not human.
Lyrics for those who don't wanna listen:
I read a note my Grandma wrote back in 1923
Grandpa kept it in his coat and he showed it once to me
He said "Boy, you might not understand but a long long time ago
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none but I loved your Grandma so
We had this crazy plan to meet and run away together
Get married in the first town we came to and live forever
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet instead
I found this letter and this is what it said"
Chorus:
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down
Darlin' wait and see
And between now and then till I see you again
I'll be loving you
Love, Me
I read those words just hours before my Grandma passed away
In the doorway of a church where me and Grandpa stopped to pray
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years
But as he said these words to her his eyes filled up with tears
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down
Darlin' wait and see
And between now and then till I see you aga
And between now and then till I see you again
I'll be loving you

I like music that is well recorded. For example:
Phil Collins "In the air tonight"
Keb Mo basically anything, but especially "The Door", "More Than One Way Home", "Riley B King".
Prince basically anything- he knows how to record
Ray Charles basically anything
Marc Cohn "Walking In Memphis" and "Paper Walls"

I listened to this after 9/11 and the next 2 anniversaries. Brahms' German Requiem, especially this verse/movement.

Great thread, folks! -
Okay, for real. Are you guys a bunch of foreigners or what?
Richard Rodgers "Victory at Sea". The opening bars of the opening piece,The Song of the High Seas are stirring. But the very last piece in the score "Victory at Sea" is 6:10 of tribute to our fathers, grandfathers, uncles, great-uncles (you get the picture) for undertaking and emerging victorious from the greatest human endeavor in history. I get the impression it was written for not just Americans, but for Allied sailors, marines and soldiers alike. In the episodes aired on tv, parts of the song accompanied the visuals of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen of all nations, parading down their respective "5th Avenues" as it were.
I always envision the guys coming home on the troop ships, and as they get close enough realize that entire buildings have giant Welcome Home, or Well Done banners down the side, or painted on the side. A big one hanging off the Golden Gate bridge. A damn shame, but it was the last time this country all got together and became one. Nothing on the planet had a chance once that happened.
It is (suitably) performed by the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, and it was recorded in stereo back in the days when RCA Victor was a US company, and actually employed a symphony orchestra. There are copies by Kunzel & The Pops, but the original punches my ticket like nothing else. It is a glorious recording as well, the opening bars more than justifying your purchase of SDA, and rocking the walls with deep bass and NO DRUMS! -
