in ceiling speakers

will in ceiling speakers need any enclosure in attic space ?
do they perform better with more air available from attic space?

    Yes, you need an enclosure. No, they will not perform better with "more air available". I am expecting to build a very similar system to what you are considering in the not too distant future.

    The following document discusses the ideal cabinet volume on P.4, which you can construct from MDF. I haven't researched this in any great detail as yet, but Polk c/s should be able to provide you with all the information you need.

    I have RC80i's mounted in the ceiling without enclosures. I know they would sound better with enclosures, but I didn't have the luxury of having the ceiling opened up enough to build anything. Mine was a remodel installation, just cut the hole, and up the speaker went. However, I didn't have insulation to contend with, just a nice, clean cavity from the ceiling up to the next level sub floor.
