LSI25 4 OHM - Separate Amp?

I have just purchased a set of LSI25 and I have a dedicated Klipch sub. I am running them with a Pioneer VSX1019 receiver and I know that its 8 OHMs while the Speakers are 4 OHM. I will not be running a 7.1 system
I learned the hard way that the receiver is getting hot and shutting down pretty quickly when I run the volume higher.
Questions:
1. I also have an Onkyo TX-/sr706 receiver - do you think I would have a better chance of running the LSI25's with this receiver without overheating and shutting down?
2. If I get a separate Amp., is it ok to get a 2 channel amp ( rather than more channels) to run the LSI25's and to save money? I saw a Emotiva UPS-2 - how is this amp - how is this one? Any reasonable priced recommendations?
3. Can the Receiver still run the Sub and process all the music/video? How would I connect the Amp to the receiver
Thank you Dave

1 - Probably. Many have run LSi speakers from Onkyo AVR's. The best solution is still to get an amp so my recommendation would be to go that route. (it would still get really hot because Onkyo's just do - but I don't know if it would shut down or not - based on experiences from others, probably not) Keep in mind, just because it does not go into protect mode - does not mean it is the best choice to run your speakers.
2 - Yep, 2 channel is fine. (and I would go used) It does not have to be expensive. I have no personal experience with Emotiva so I will let you research exact brands on your own. Common used brands with good results would be the standard Adcom, Rotel, parasound and others. I would not dismiss some other alternatives either such as older Yamaha (M series), Acurus, etc. It all comes down to budget, but rest assured - an amp does not have to break the bank to be decent.
3 - The reciever will still do all the processing and can even use the on board amps to run other channels if you would like. You would hook up the amplifier to the pre-outs on the back of your reciever. (It will be on the back of your receiver in the same area as your sub output) use an RCA cable to hook the front left and right pre-out on your reciever to the left and right input on your amplifier. Then hook the speaker to your amplifier. Hook up everything else just like you do today (sub, cd player, other speakers, etc) Using the channel adjustments in your receiver you can even balance the sound between your external amp and your recievers internal amps so everything plays at the correct volume.
good luck,

you can buy my Adcom GFA-5800... I assure you, it runs the 25's. You can even listen to it on a pair of 25's before you buy

If you want to get the MOST out of these speakers you'll need a good amp. You must like your music at higher volumes if your receiver is going into protection mode:eek:.
The LSI series really comes alive when powered with a good amp. You can get a good used 2 channel amp pretty cheap, you'll need, IMHO at least 200wpc @4ohm although I would prefer to see 300@4ohms to be sure you reach the full potential of these great speakers.
I have the Emotiva XPA-5 amp and a Sunfire Cinema Grand 200x5, currently I'm comparing the two amps to see which I like better for my LSI system...to be quite frank in EARLY testing the Emotiva has a slight edge.
Enjoy

Very interesting that you are liking the Emotiva over the Sunfire. I have had the chance to hear a Sunfire but never the Emotiva. You should start a new thread doing a compair.
As for the LSI's I do say anything over 300wpc would be good. From what everyone says about them they like lots of power.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t -
Hey Dave, I have the Lsi 25s' and use an ADCOM GFA-555 two channel amp and send it to the receiver. Its 200 watts at 8 ohm and I think 350 at 4. It does a great job. My receiver is a marantz 7200 with quite a bit of power but for these types of speakers they love power. You can go ebay right now and do a search for adcom 555 and you will always find a few used for a good price. I don't think you can get a better amp for the price. Adcom has a following very similar to the polk sdas', they are an oldie but goodie.

PS if they have the 555 II get that one, its the second edition amp.

Hi - may I ask how much you would want for it? How old it is? Condition? Lastly how would I connect it to my new AV receiver? Thank you DAve
-
Thank you so much - may I ask how I would connect the Adcom 555 to my Pioneer receiver? Is it the same RCA connections?

You might want to consider a Carver TFM. Check out www.vintagehifishop.com. I have bought from him for a few years now and he keeps Adcom and Carver equipment in stock.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t

If you were asking me, condition is extremely good. The amp only has the smallest of marks on the right rear corner, and I mean small. Can't even see from 5 feet, and they are in the back anyway. I have the amp currently listed in the For Sale area of this forum for 550. It has both balanced and unbalanced connections. I have a bunch of pictures at high resolution if you want to see them.

Alright, I looked into it and your Pioneer does not have preouts and will not work iwht an external amplifier. However, your onkyo does have preouts.
I have included pictures that show where these are:
-
And heres how you would hook it to an amplifier (thats my gfa-5800 pictured):
Edit: oh, substitute rca interconnects for those red and blue paint lines -
You are so nice to go to this trouble. I understand and appreciate it. Your amp is nice but more than I wanted to spend. i need to think about it for the moment and thank you

That's what we're here for. Finally I get to contribute something that isn't a pointless rant or a poor attempt at humor
If you want a similar amp, the GFA-555 is another old, but good amp by adcom... it will run you slightly over $300
I'm trying to think of something cheaper, but I'm coming up with nothing. -
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
My Onkyo receiver will allow me to reset my system to accept 4 ohm speakers - it says so in the manual and my receiver would actually allow me to do so. Then they wrote back to me and said that was only meant for other countries. That my receiver was only meant to play speakers that were 8ohm
What are your thoughts? -
You can get a Carver TFM 25 which is 225 wpc into 8ohm and 350wpc into 4ohm in the low $300 range.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t

I am not a fan of running such low ohm speakers off of an AVR. I feal you will not get the best sound you could.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t -

i agree, i have a pair of tfm35s running my 9s and 7s and i think its a perfect match, the louder i crank em the better they sound. i had a pioneer elite vsx54tx and it sounded pretty good but nothing like the carvers. i have heard nothing but good things about the Adcoms and sunfires are awsome but a bit pricy for me. do yourself a favor and amp them babies. -

I'd love to see a "shootout" review."They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I'd love to see a "shootout" review.
I'm working on it, I've only had the Sunfire for 3 days so I'll need a few weeks to accurately compare the two.
I'm also trying to borrow some Krell amps, but those are monoblocks and I don't think that would be a fair comparison.
My initial thoughts are: Sunfire, very warm, laid back (maybe too laid back for the LSI's), detailed, very pleasing and smooth sound.
Emotiva, up front, dynamic, good lows, wide soundstage, and as my 16yr. old puts it "more fun".
Much more to follow

Hi - I couldn't respond to your private email because I didn't have enough posts yet. I am working on something else and can let you know later next week Thank you

I have the LSI-15's, LSIFX (rears), and just replaced my LSIC with a CSI-A4 (I like it better for HT.).

that's funny, I used to have CSi3 and replaced it with LSiC...I like it better with LSiC for HT...where's your center located??Video: LG 55LN5100/Samsung LNT4065F

My center is just below the wall hung tv at ear level......just to elaborate..I liked the LSIC for music, but I rarely listen to music with the surround system on. I think the voices are alittle easier to hear with the CSI in HT. and it seems a little brighter, + my wife likes it better also.
