DVD Review: GRAN TORINO (Warner Bros./Village Roadshow)

It was an ongoing joke between him and the Mung people next door. At first he was just tossing racial slurs as insults to them back and forth, but as he came to realize they were good people all his racial slurs became meaningless and even their targets knew. The boy just laughed at it and even played along (hence the barber scene).
It's a movie, why would I find it offensive? They weren't aimed at me and Clint Eastwood certainly didn't mean for the movie to offend anyone, he was just portraying a very real type of person that exists in this world.

Right. Just wanted to clarify what you meant; good points I suppose. It's a movie, why would I find it offensive?
Well, if I have to explain THAT one to you, we need a lot of bandwidth...!They weren't aimed at me and Clint Eastwood certainly didn't mean for the movie to offend anyone, he was just portraying a very real type of person that exists in this world.
Well, of COURSE they weren't aimed PERSONALLY at you -- but I can still see people of that designation being offended. I suppose that's respectable that you weren't though.I watched the blu-ray.
Ahh -- okay, just curious because we're discussing the standard DVD in here in terms of audio/video quality; that's what I reviewed. -
9 out of 10
I was half expecting the ending to be anti-climactic. He knew he was terminally ill and saw his way of dealing with the Mung gang as the only way he could protect his new found friends. It was like his way to appease God for all his "wickedness and bigotry" from the past 60 years.
Bravo Clint."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,
CAUSE I SPEAK OF THE POMPITIOUS OF LOVE" -
When Clint's character finally went to confession, he had only few things to confess and never thought his killing in korea was a sin. He accpeted god and his salvation was to help his neighbor by not killing anyone so he can go to heaven to see his wife. If he ended up killing them and he would commited a biggest sin and wouldnt able to see his wife. So sacrificing his life for people who he hated for years is his salvation in heaven.
this is what i think of his ending movie
however i kept thinking some azz will blow up his gran tornio car and he got pissed off and kills everyone but i was wrong... i liked how my thoughts were turned aroundI am 100% BORN DEAF and No I am not kidding! Why am I here? My wife's hearing!

Interesting thoughts and perspectives in this thread on this rather controvertial film, people; thank you for all your opinions!

Its a rare movie that can make a bunch of audiophile have an intelligent debate about plot and meaning instead of LFE extension and surround sound effects!
It must be a good movie! After I saw it I said to my wife, "they haven't made good movies like Gran Torino since they were making Gran Torinos!" Its a real 1970's type of film. I felt the same way about History of Violence too! -

Agreed -- and History of Violence was a great film, as well; haven't picked up the Blu-ray yet but I have New Line's DVD version. You're right -- it moved me in a way films hadn't moved me in a long time after I finished History of Violence; there was a pacing and tension about it -- much like No Country for Old Men -- that made it feel unique...some films just do that. They're moving.
As for the audiophile thing...yeah, you would think we would all be discussing the rumblings of the LFE track on the disc, being that this was a DVD review, but the plot seems to be the most controvertial element here. Some discs beg to be analyzed on the level of its sound and video quality, and we do discuss those here too, but Gran Torino seems to have sparked a great deal of emotion in people here in terms of its plot.
