Fix my DVD driver please.

I have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D drive and I'm having problems with it. It will read and play CDs no problems, and it reads blank discs but can't burn to them, and it won't even read program discs. The computer says the drive is working correctly, but obviously that isn't true. I have updated to the latest firmware from the manufacture and reinstalled the drive, both to no avail. Please help.

I do not think it is a driver problem

You really think I might need a new one?
Yes

I would take it apart, lube any transport pieces and clean the lens, if that works, great; if not, drives are cheap enough.

That was my next question. Lately I've been using a CD-RW and burning a podcast to it every day for my commute. Would that shorten its life or make it act weird like it is?

Ultimately, yes. The lasers are variable intensity (writing takes a more focused & stronger beam than reading) so the more burning the shorter the life. I doubt a short burn a day would wear it out but you didn't say how old it is. Anyway, it could be a weak laser. Cleaning it may buy you a little more time but for $25 for a new one, it probably isn't worth it to bother.Sony 60'' SXRD 1080p

I've had the drive for about 2 years, so I may just buck up and get another one.
