Then why are there so many god awful movies that sell a lot of tickets? Why is Will Smith a star? -

Unfortunately, you're right on the money. I understand your use of 'stupid' as being a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I get what your are saying, I think, and I agree with it. Americans do have a tendency to go for the huge blockbuster come hell or high water -- drawn by a familiar name or mindless action -- no matter how vapid and devoid of substance they may be.
I tend to avoid any movies based on action comic books or 70s TV shows out of hand. It was a serial comic or TV show to begin with, and the idea of compressing it into a 2 hour feature flick just seems unnatural. Maybe some people like it for nostalgia reasons.
Watching stuff blow up when your 20...pretty cool. Don't find it too stimulating any more.
The one TV-based movie that I did see (on DVD) and enjoy was The Simpsons, but thats only because its been one of my very favorite TV shows for some time and, in the end, I really only thought of the film as an extended TV episode, nothing to get worked up about (i.e. certainly not worth a trip to the theatre)2 Ch.

I'm not a "+1" sort of guy, but Norm just hit it out of the park.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

So, because some people like mindless action movies, like to watch stuff blow up and are devoid of substance they are mostly stupid.
No... this in no way describes a stupid person. I would generally think being "devoid of substance" would put someone among the intellectually elite.I never had it like this where I grew up. Boy I love when a comment I made over a year ago gets brought back to spur debate.
Liking mindless movies doesn't mean you're stupid. I like mindless action movies and comedies too, and I'm only partly stupid.
But for the most part the people who DO like intelligent / deep / thought-provoking movies AREN'T stupid. See how that works? A implies B, but B does not necessitate A?If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
more...and it's sounding better and better, sans the 3D aspect.Ridley Scott is now firmly looking at his 3D "Alien" two-part prequel as his next project, the "Robin Hood" director telling UK paper The Independent that he expects the venture to take no prisoners.
"The film will be really tough, really nasty. It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?" says Scott. "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindoff is polishing the first prequel's script set three decades before the events in the 1979 original film.
Scott takes a friendly jab at "Aliens" director James Cameron, seeing the success he had with the first sequel as a challenge he has to at least match with these films - "Jim's raised the bar and I've got to jump to it."
Meanwhile, Digital Spy reports that actress Gemma Arterton has indicated she'll meet with Scott about possibly starring in the planned prequels. Scott was apparently so impressed with her work in recent British thriller "The Disappearance of Alice Creed" that he wants to meet with her for the main female role.
Arterton however has a busy schedule including Richard E. Grant's cowboy comedy "In With the Outlaws", and the Ruth Rendell novel adaptation "The Keys To The Street".If...

I like that, with all of the great films Ridley Scott has put out over the years, he's referred in that article as "the 'Robin Hood' director." Really? If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Where'd you get that I said I didn't like Aliens? Aliens is a great mindless popcorn action film but Alien was total suspense/horror, far superior to Aliens in every regard.
No way, they need Ridley Scott, not James Cameron. We don't need a mindless popcorn prequel.
Well, sure, unless you find horror flicks tediously predictable, and so would rather be entertained instead of waiting until the inevitable end.Turntable: Empire 208

Alien was a horror/suspense with a some what brainy twist thrown-in when it came to the Android having a hidden set of instructions.
Aliens was a straight up run and gun movie with a good continuance of a plot line.
I don't have a favorite but will say that I would have to pay homage to the original from a creative and story telling aspect. -
Hoping for the best, but Tony Scott is not Ridley Scott. And Tony Scott isn't in the same conversation with James Cameron.
As for the stupid vs. non stupid argument. Many of the movies that we Americans watch are not very sophisticated. That's ok. But it's like comparing filet mignon to a Big Mac. Don't argue that a Big Mac is just as good or better than filet mignon. Accept it for what it is, and enjoy it. But it ISN'T filet mignon. -
To sum it up...
Alien = Filet Mignon
Aliens = Big MacIf...

I was thinking more like...geeez, I don't know....Smokin' Aces or something, as a Big Mac.
Aliens is leagues better than Smokin' Aces. -
Gone In Sixty Seconds....Perfect comparison!
Gone In Sixty Seconds is a Big Mac. -
Yeah, it was just a joke. I do like Aliens, it's a well done popcorn film, you really cannot compare the first two films, too different.
I just hope Scott doesn't go for an all out popcorn action film and gives us more horror and suspense with these.If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent. -
Absolutely. Two different genres.
Alien: Sci Fi Suspense Thriller
Aliens: Sci Fi Action Thriller
Alien is quiet.
Aliens is loud.
In Alien they give you time to think.
In Aliens they don't give you time to think. -

So is this supposed to be a 'tip of the hat' to the original Alien story line, but not necessarily an intro or explanation of where the Space Jockey originated?
This better be worth it. There are lots of us geeks out here who want to know the whole story.

Well ..... it is going to star one of Hollywood's finest actresses, Noomi Rapace:
I think she's one of Hollywood's finest actresses. Or at least an actress. Or something. But she's in the movie, so it has to be good !
... at least better than an Alien prequel.Sal Palooza
