I have to ship a an amp that weighs a little over 50lbs boxed. UPS has seemed to have gone way up in price. Is Fed Ex better? The calculators online lied to me a few times(UPS)
Thanks
Ben

Fedex is better..... i shipped a Honda engine in a box through Fedex with no issues.

I wouldn't ship anything through UPS if you paid me to.

I always ship UPS and have had good luck with them. The last amp I shipped was around 80lbs and cost around $80. I paid for the shipping directly online -- costs a lot more if you go to a UPS store.

I just shipped a sub from Maine to Florida, UPS. I double boxed. Everything arrived fine according to my friend on the other side. I've also received numerous items including a fairly heavy Onkyo amp via FedEx--never had ANY problems with damage with FedEx! The Onkyo freight from Washington state to Maine....one week!

I only use Fed Ex for shipping. The price is always cheaper and the box arrives in good condition.

Have had bad and good experances with both UPS and Fedex. Best thing to do is pack very well and pay for the insurance.

Use plywood crate or a $3 large suitcase from Thrift store to pack it. Shipping 50 pounds will be expen$ive from any of the trucks.

I've generally been using the good ol' USPS for most things for the last few years and been pleasantly surprised by the cost and how well the box and contents survives to its destination (even via Parcel Post). I don't honestly know, though, if you can go to 50 lbs with them.

I have better luck with Fedex. Just shipped a Carver TFM-55 to Rolland, agree on insurance and pack well.

I used 1/2" styro-foam all the way aound with foam rubber around amp and wrapped amp in bubble wrap.

When I took it to Fedex it fell out of the Expedition when I opened the hatch and it did just fine.

I would use Fedex (seems this is what lots of companies I've bought higher priced stuff from ship with).

That being said, you have to pack carefully, as if you don't pack properly (for example, 2 inches of padding all around, shippers won't honor insurance even if you bought it).

TV show I saw said typical package is going to be dropped several times at sort facility from average height of about 30 inches.

I think you need at least to double box, with at least 2 inches of heavy duty cushioning between inner and outer box.

Think about how amp you're shipping will shift around in inner box, what can get scuffed up, and what would happen if box is dropped onto hard concrete floor with all force directed into one corner.

Also got to think about what will rattle around in box if you don't pad and tape to something else inside box.

Good luck, because 50 lb. amp accelerating into hard concrete floor can create a lot of shock if not packed properly.

Also require signature at delivery and ask buyer to look over box before signing. If one corner is crumpled in, ask driver to note, and if really concerned, maybe open box in front of driver.

I've never had any issues with UPS, USPS, FedEx (or the late DHL, which were far cheaper than all the others when I used them ... too cheap, perhaps, to survive, apparently). I would use the insurance, however, despite the possible problems with making a successful claim if the need arises (which I have never attempted, I hasten to add) because it is relatively inexpensive.

I normally ship USPS because of my location and the prohibitive costs of shipping via UPS or Fed Ex but if I had to choose one it would be Fed Ex they are on average 20% cheaper than UPS and seem to damage less stuff, also use "NEW" boxes otherwise they wont pay out on insurance.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

I think I get a cheaper rate with UPS when I use the shipping from PayPal for some reason. I was quoted a shipping price from one of the UPS Stores and it was almost $14 more than the shipping thru PayPal. Check with PayPal and see what happens. Plus you can schedule a pick-up from your house.

After a few incidents with UPS.............I opened a Fed Ex online account. You can save even more if open an actual account (extra 8% on ground and home delivery).

I used to manage one of those pack-n-ship places and they do an outstanding job of packing and standing behind damaged items but you do pay quite a bit extra. For large heavy items, fragile items, expensive items sometimes it's worth it.

My brother had to ship his largish Dodd amp in for service and opted to pay extra to have the pack-n-ship place pack it and insure properly. The UPS insurance is a joke unless the item is mutilated beyond recognition or lost. I know first hand as I have a cdp here I shipped to a buyer when it left here it worked perfectly. When it got there it skipped and the display no longer works. Claim denied because no obvious damage was done. I bent over and took it like a man.

For an amp that large dbl boxing is a must and by the time you buy all the boxes, supplies, etc. sometimes it's easier to just go to a pack-n-ship place. You decide.

UPS is bad. All boxed come smashed and sometimes items are destroyed. The dropped a sub weighing over a hundred lbs from a shelf that shook the entire truck. Acted like nothing happened. Yes sub was damaged.

Gotta confirm that. Shipped a few brand new boxes with these guys. Boxes came in round-shaped.

FedEx is good for home, but not for business (IMHO).
