LSi9's nearfield on a desk

I know that the general consensus is that most receivers can't drive the LSi9's adequately, but what about in a nearfield application? probably 2-3' from the listener, on a desktop (likely with mopad isolation). Would something like a pioneer a35r or yamaha rx-397/497 work? (both 4-ohm stable two channel amps, the pioneer is lacking a tuner but I have no real preference there).
We're only talking 65 full bandwidth watts into 4 ohms w/ the pioneer, a bit more with the yammies.
Doable, or a waste of money? I like the idea of a more polite or laid back top end - I tend to cut about 6 dB or so of treble with the tone controls for my Bostons, depending on the room (like the detail, don't like the sizzle). I currently have an older rx-v series yamaha that is temporarily in the office until I settle on a replacement, and I think it paired the VR-M60's will lead to treble fatigue very fast.

Why not go for 7's instead? Those will be easier to drive and in a nearfield ap you wouldn't be too worried about the extra bass from the 2nd driver.

I think they might work as near-field monitors; but on a desktop? They're just so deep (17-18") that it might be a problem. At least it may look a little strange. I guess it could depend on how big your desk is.THE MAN-CAVE 5.1 CHANNEL A/V RIG

Are they really any easier to drive given they have the same efficiency? I've never had a MTM bookshelf before and I'd like to try it out.
The desk has some space behind it, the speakers will end up being roughly flush with the monitor bezel (and I hadn't planned on using the space behind them, anyway).
the VR-M60's are already 12" deep (and 11" wide!), so deeper yet more narrow speakers will actually free up a bit of space. -

The LSi9's need space, I think you'd be wasting your money. Not to mention how deep they are. I think the 7's would be a better match for what you're trying to accomplish.Review Site_ (((AudioPursuit)))
