My Dexter has Kidney Disease

Some of you know I was set to adopt a new puppy tomorrow.
Over the weekend my boy Dexter ( a Rat Terrier) began vomiting and not eating or drinking. He would just lie in his bed and shake and not even eat treats. Concerned, I took him to the emergency vet and they told me he has chronic kidney disease. He had a BUN level as high as their equipment could measure (over 140).

He is now in the hospital as I write this getting fluids.
I am supposed to take him to my regular Vet Tuesday for a prognosis and see if I am going to get to spend any more time with my sweet boy.

Does anyone else here with a dog have any knowledge of this disease? I know Cathy mentioned something in my Shepherd thread....

Wingnut - so sorry. Don't know about dogs but I did have this happen to one of our older kitties. She pulled out of it and lived a few more years. Best wishes and go Wings. Chris

wing, my parents had a dalmation that passed because of this. I think it depends on how advanced it is; with a level that high I would imagine it depends on how long it has been that high and how much the toxins affected his heart and other organs. I am so sorry to hear about this - we have an 11 year old jack russell terrier. You and Dexter will be in our thoughts.

Oh - Wingnut - the other thing I forgot to mention is the concept of "treating the animal - not the number." In other words, If the animal seems fine, don't freak out too much over the BUN number. Some animals tolerate it better than others. Our Berry cat was out chasing chipmunks when her BUN was 160 or something. She should have been dead but was a tough girl. Chris

Sorry to hear that,,but you are right about treating the symptom/disease,,not the numbers,, as there are no absolutes, and medicine is NOT an exact science. How old is the dog? Hope things turn out well.

Sorry to hear this Darla.Things that can cause liver problems are too numerous to get into. But I will tell you this.I lost a beloved dog awhile back.So I did alot of research, read up on desease's in dogs, and part of the problem is the food you give them. The other is heartworm and flea medications which pretty much turns their liver to jelly.Think about it.Our medications for humans come with a list of disclosures, may cause this or that.Dog medications have no such requirements.I learned alot about keeping dogs healthy and how to read the ingredients of dog food labels.Educate yourself, you'll have a different approach with the new pup,and possibly save the other from the same fate.

    Hello Wingnut,
I'm very sorry your dog is having problems, but take heart things can be reversed. Two years ago our dog was diagnosed with the same kind of problem. We approached it from two angles and she did fine. One was to begin using Azodyl, which is a specifically encapsulated bacteria that helped eliminate toxins from her digestive tract and in turn made her kidney function begin returning to normal. The second approach was to begin acupuncture and Chinese herb treatment. We found an excellent vet that was schooled in traditional western medicine as well as an eastern approach. There are Chinese herbs that can result in dramatic improvement. This combined with a change in diet resulted in her creatin and BUN and phosphorus levels returning to normal.
Believe me I do know how you feel and hope your dog recovers.
    Take care, Ken

Thank you Ken. He is out of the ER and at his Vet now. They are doing more blood tests. his Vet says the prognosis is very bad and he is experiencing severe renal failure according to the numbers provided by the ER. I am praying the numbers have come down over the weekend.

My 9 year old pug died from kidney failure. The problem is, by the time symptoms show, it's usually too late. We wrote it off as her getting older, less active, etc. Hopes and prayers for your pup.

Well his Vet said his levels only came down a tad and that he was more than likely in renal failure. They gave him a 10% chance but said that he probably only had a few days but they let hm come home with me with some meds and fluids.

Darla, I am sorry to hear. It's pretty amazing how much an animal becomes part of a family in such a short period of time. Having a companion as long as Dexter, this cannot be easy. Spend as much quality time as possible and know that you have been the best friend that he has. He will cherish this time just as much as you. Take care and we're thinking about you guys.

    Darla,
Sorry to hear of your dog's illness. Hopefully there's a miracle for him. I know how close we get to our pet's. I lost my 12 year old Lab to cancer 5 years ago, and miss him everyday. No matter what kind of day you've had, dealing with people, co-worker's, a boss, frustrated or angry and feeling like crap, guess who's at the front door with a big sloppy kiss, and tail a-waggin?:) It's unconditional love all the time. My thought's and prayer's are with you and Dexter.

Darla - don't give up on Dexter. We went through this exact same thing with our Berry cat a couple years ago. One vet wanted to put her down but another was more hopeful. We gave her fluids and a special diet and meds and she had a good year plus a few months with us. Best wishes for Dexter. Chris
