Pioneer Elite SC-05 Zone 2 Setup

HI all. I'm new to the forum and could really use some help. Just purchased the Pioneer Elite SC-05 and trying to work my way through the instruction manual but it's a slow go. I'm stuck getting Zone 2 to work properly so here goes:
I want to use Zone 2 for stereo (am/fm & cds) with vintage Dahlquist DQ20i speakers. I have been able to set am/fm radio presets while in the main zone but if I power down zone 1 with zone 2 power on, I get no response from any of the controls on the front of the receiver or the remote. For example, I can select "Tuner" as the input source but can't switch radio bands, move up and down radio stations, etc. Everything seems locked up. Seems to work fine when I'm in Zone 1. My assumption was that you could have power on to Zone 2 only and be able to use the stereo. Any help would be most appreciated. I assume I screwed something up on initial setup but the setup looks fine. My home theater (main zone) consists of:
Polk Audio Surroundbar 50/ Velodyne Impact-12 sub
Pioneer Elite SC-05 Receiver
Samsung BD-3600A blu-ray player
Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR (Cablevision box)
Belkin PF#! line conditioner and surge protector
Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-111FD

Thanks for your response. But something is amiss. I have the SURR BACK SYSTEM setup as Zone 2 and I can play these speakers separately. And to sidestep the analog/digital issue, let's say I want to use the receiver's Tuner and listen to the radio in Zone 2. My issue is that when I have Zone 2 turned on (other zones are off), none of the controls on the front panel respond (sidestepping the remote). Can't change the radio band, can't change the station. It just plays whatever it was set to when zone 1 was on. So... what am I doing wrong?

Barb,
welcome to the forum. You do not have to have the main zone on in order to use zone 2. You have to switch the remote to "zne 2 control" you do not need to use the front panel.
You have full control over zone 2 including volume discrete power on and off , source selection , Ipod( but you need to be able to see the onscreen display) and even the internal tuner.
I think the problem is the remote, your not in zone 2 mode.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
Thanks so much for the response Mantis. Unfortunately, I am in Zone 2. "Zone 2 ON" is displayed on the front panel. I can choose a source, but when I choose "Tuner" for example, the buttons on the control panel for "Band", the Tune wheel, etc don't respond. I've been focusing on getting the Tuner going in Zone 2 for a pair of vintage Dahlquist speakers, so I'm not sure what else I'll have issues with. I thought getting the tuner to work would be easy. BTW, all the controls work fine when I'm in the main zone, the issue is strictly when zone 1 is off and zone 2 is on.

I just spoke with Pio Customer Service, who states the SC-05 is working as intended. You've gotta be in zone 1 to control most of the tuner controls, ie "band" for am/fm switching, tune +/-, etc. Makes listening to the radio pretty limiting in zone 2 if you've got zone 1 busy with a movie or tv. Thanks to all for the help. Mark
