Anyone own some Mangepan 1.6's plus some Polk 10M's or up? Just looking to get an idea on how they compare sonically? Thanks,

Mike

Magnepan's 1.6 ribbons speakers area different class of speaker. The maggies are placement sensitive, very inefficient and power hungry, but when configured correctly, has a "you are there" space. Be aware that maggies also has issues when used long term in humid areas, the "voice coils" separates from the mylar diaphragm causing a buzzing noise.

I have not heard the 1.6's, but after having all kind of speakers I settled with the Maggie MMG (settled meaning for now). There's something about the sound of Maggies that no other speaker has. They are not strong on bass, but the ability to reproduce instruments and vocals with a huge soundstage is second to none.

They are power hungry as jon says, and they need lots of room to sound their best.

They are not ribbon though; the 3.6 and above do have a ribbon tweter, but the 1.6 and belws are planar with a quasy ribbon tweeter. You can read more here:

Before you are going to like Magnepans, you are going to need to be sold on the characteristics of a planer speaker and that those characteristics are what match with what you enjoy in SQ. The presentation from a planar is just much different than your typical monkey coffin speaker design like a Monitor 10 or an LSi. The Magnepans are going to be a little more sensitive to upstream gear and placement than either the Monitor 10 or LSi. You really need to go listen to the Magnepans to decide for yourself.

I spent some time with MMG's in my rig and had mixed reactions. On the plus side, string instuments like violin and guitar sounded more real than any other speaker I've had. In my opinion, they also lacked the umph needed for Rock music and powerful Classical music. I had difficulty integrating my sub with them because they do bass very very tight and fast, so my sub just couldn't keep up and it sounded off. That was a Mirage S12 sub.

The 1.6's are an amazing speaker. but there are many things to consider. Like all the mentioned above, I stress placement and room size. These speakers work best when they have proper amount of room to work correctly. When placed poorly, they sound terrible.

Also you will be required to have a good quality amp, mess this up and they fall flat on there face.

If you can get over how damn ugly they are, you can have a pretty impressive setup.

Good luck here, you will need it
