Whats up all?

I'm thinking of adding jogging to my workouts. I lift weights, I ride Mountain bikes , I do martial arts and now I want to add Running/jogging.

Since I started Martial Arts back in 1993, I noticed shoes/sneakers don't fit properly anymore. They always seem to be tight. I tried a few wide models and that seemed to work out ok but not everyone carries wide sizes.

I have a problem buying sneakers for the same reasons. I'm looking for some really good running sneakers. I was told by a friend of mine who runs to try out some Brookes. I never heard of them but from the website and my friend, they are awesome running sneakers. Is there any other sneakers you guys could point me to? The biggest problem I have is Nike. They seem to be built for people with skinny feet. They don't fit good at all.

Thanks guys,

Dan

I run. Not as much as I used to but I'll still knock out 5 miles every now and then. I focus more on Interval training now than distance but I do distance about once or twice a week.

As far as wide feet go, I got 'em too. Not crazy wide but New Balance has been the best for me as far as that goes. Have fun.:)

Im not an avid runner but I do have a very active job and Ive been known to jump on the treadmill for a half mile to mile run from time to time. I too need wide fit shoes and have found New Balance to be the best. Theyre the most comfortable by far as well as most durable and all their sizes are made in wide. Nike's were ok but I found they fell apart too soon. Reebok are not as comfortable and dont last long either.

    Thanks guys.

I got a .92 mile run around my block. From my drive way back to my driveway. I mapped it out with my bike. I was able to run just about the entire .92 but I got winded and had to walk. So I went around again and also had to walk / jog / walk / jog the last bit out. I'm not in running shape. Funny I can ride my bike 25 miles and feel great. Running is a lot more challenging.

I'm actually a bit tired from just 2 laps of .92 miles. Damn

Dan, I run 2-3x/wk, and it's definitely requires a different type of conditioning than martial arts. I run in Brooks Glycedrin and Asics Gel Nimbus. Make sure that you know your foot type. There are three: Neutral, Stability/Support and Motion Control. Most people needs support type. Check out

    http://www.roadrunnersports.com/

They got great selection. Make sure you get 1/2 to 1 size bigger than your dress shoes.

Dan, I recommend asics running shoes. I have trouble finding shoes that fit right because of my wide feet, and have found that asics work the best for me.

I run about 6 miles a day...being in the Army we run alot. I wear Asics running shoes, I also have wide feet. They hold up well. My advice would be to go to a running store or a place that sells alot of shoes. Not footlocker or any of those other crappy stores. What I say is good may not be good for you, every foot is different.

Fleet Feet is my choice for true fitting of athletic shoes. The two cities mentioned above have stores if you are nearby. Here's a link as well: http://www.fleetfeetsports.com/store-locations

I run 2 miles every weekday morning before work and have tried many different brands of running shoes. I am a big fan of Brooks and Mizuno, but every foot and fit is different. That's where FF comes in. They have a computer/video/treadmill system that aides in the determination of pronation and other fit requirements.

    Best of luck.

Looks like there are 3 of them near my house. I live right outside of Phila , Pa. I'm gonna check them out. I need a good shoe if I'm gonna run. My feet hurt right now from just 1 run.

I have a good quality higher end pair of Nike running shoes but they fit tight . I don't really like them much at all.

The manufacturer with the most diverse sizing and a pretty good shoe, although my knees can no longer take the long run, is New Balance.

NB also runs wider in general, unlike Nike. You can get these guys in widths up to EEEE and 15 plus sizes for you B-ball guys?

APC just recommended one of the bettr running stores in the country...cannot go wrong with Fleet Feet.

As for shoes they will fit you in the right one, but usually people with wider feet tend to go towards New Balance.

    Dan,

Also check out Chi Running. It uses Tai Chi philosophy and apply it to running. When I first started running, I had very bad shin problems. My Sifu loaned me the Chi Running DVD. I started using their techniques and did not have any shin pain.

    Dan,
I hate running. I rather jump on my roadie or mt bike but when I do run it's with Asics (wide feet, too). I like the info on Runner's World.

What art do you study? Sifu is chinese so I assume a chinese art. I have studied Tai Chi , Ba Gua , Northern 7 Star Praying Mantis , Shaloin Tiger , White Crane which is all part of our system which is called Spirit Wind Internal Arts.

I'm gonna look into this Chi running DVD.

    Thanks,

Hiya Dan. Here is my advice.

1.Go to a specialty store. It may cost a little more, but worth it in the long run (ha-ha). This type of store has more knowledgeable employees vs a chain store like Footlocker where the majority of the employees only work there for the discounts.

2.Forget brand and current trends or fads

3.Take the socks you run in (clean of course, lol) when you try on shoes

4.Go later in the day or right after a run because your feet swell/expand and it's best to try on shoes when your feet are like this to get a proper fit.

5.Take your old running shoes with you. The salesman can look at your tread and see where it is the most worn. This will help determine what type of shoe you need for your foot.

6.Make sure the salesman measures both feet. One foot is always a little larger then the other. Make sure the size you choose is based on the larger foot.

Here is a link to find out a little about what kind of feet you have. Good hunting.

A good short video for working your core muscles which will make running more enjoyable. I am a firm believer in core training and the benefits it offers. I'm not endorsing NB but thought this was a worthy video anyway.
