I can do 30 (carefully) right now. My personal best was 100 but I'm a long way from that. Anything over 80 is way harder than the first 80 was. What kind of time frame are we looking at?

I usually do at least 35 and try to hit 50 as often as I can.

Oh, I see, the punk ex-cop wants to call me out again.

Guess what, douchebag, I never said I did 250 all in one shot. I said I do 250 in one night. My personal best in one shot was 122. I normally don't do more than 50 because it doesn't benefit, just hurts. I do 10 sets of 25 reps, with 10 sets of 60 reps of sit-ups in about an hour, alternating between push-ups and sit ups for each set. It's good cardio and good strength training. When done with that, it's either arm pulls on the weight machine with 150 pounds or chin ups on the chin up bar until I can't move the weight. Then I stop, grab some food and watch TV or piss people off on the Internet for fun. Then I go to bed.

Dude... you crack me up. Did somebody piss in your Wheaties again this morning?

Good show on 122, that is impressive, even though I am a douchbag and I am sure my comments will be construed as an insult somehow. Amazing.

For those participating do your initial test by Saturday. If you want to report it, that is fine. If you do not, I understand. Mainly because I may not report mine.

A few friends and I did our initial test while ago. Due to the atmosphere, laughing, and general merriment, I'm not sure it was accurate. However, I did 24 good form pushups. And while laughing I managed 9 crunches.

Anybody else planning on doing the pushups, situps, and squats?

Just push ups for me. I do sit ups and squats but I have no desire to do 100 at once. I do resistance sit ups on the balance ball.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

100 push ups is a ton, unless you are 'tiny lil fellow' as the Geico Gecko would say. I've taken about two months off from lifting/working out but all the draft talk got me thinking about the bench press test the NFL draftees do. 225 lbs. consectutive reps, all the way down, all the way up. Last week I went in cold and did four sets, of 7, 4, 2 and 2, I might have done better if I had someone spotting me, but I was happy none the less. This week I am sore to high holy hell, my chest, core, shoulders and arms are tender to say the least. Last night when my wife went for a run I did 4 sets of push ups on elevated grips and only managed 10, 9, 5 and 5 the soreness won out! I'll read up on the challenge and give it some consideration. My YMCA Fitness evaluation test had a push ups in a minute test, I scored 30 which is between 'above average' and good for my age class (45 is excellent). The trainer doing the test said I quit breathing the last few push ups which is a big no-no. What do you guys weigh standing and what do you weigh with your hands in the push up position on a scale?

    174.9 this morning.

My weight goes up and down though. I average between 170 and 180. If I try to cut weight and lose a bunch of water weight, I can get back down in to the low 160's but as soon as a I eat something, it comes back.

    TX,

If you can pump 225 like that you should have no problem doing 50 push ups unless you're heavier than I, and I'm pretty close to 220--at least 25 lbs over a desired weight! Sounds like the sourness took you out--I CAN completely empathize with that.

I am working up to one-hundred pushups in tamden with my life partner. I might of made it a few times but its hard to keep counting with all the blood running out my head, the one with the two eyes.

When I was SORT member we had to do hundred just to be on the team, but that was a long time ago. I can likely knock out 50 if my life depended on it.

I do pushups everyday as part of my 10 minute warmup before working out to up my heart rate. I can do 100 with no problem and that's with perfect form. I would enter my name but 100 for me is not a "challenge"......it's my line of work so I have an unfair advantage. Crunches,sit-ups are great and I do them 3 times a week but I prefer core workouts. As far as squats I do them as well. My favorite are the old school front squats with a 2x4 under my heels. Here is an example of an exercise I do for my core.

In the video the guy is holding a 45lb. weight (I use a 100lb. weight) and I also switch it up and use a barbell with 225lbs. to up the intensity. When using a barbell the wider your arms are when holding the barbell the more stability you have; I have my hands about 8" apart when performing this exercise. Awesome for strength, flexibility, agility, and works wonders for your core.
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/b3KkocrUvnk&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/b3KkocrUvnk&hl=en&fs=1&quot; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

For cardio I almost never get on a treadmill or elliptical. Imo getting outside and doing the real thing is much more beneficial. Don't get me wrong though, an elliptical and treadmill are good for you for sure but I prefer the real thing. My workouts every Wed. and Sun. consist of the following (we have a rule when we train, if you puss out on any part of this training you have to drop and do 50 pushups PLUS finish where you left off):

1.Flipping tire and after each flip jumping through it (the tire in the video is really small compared to the one we use). After you flip/jump it 10 times down then you flip/jump it 10 times back and that is 1 set. The guys and I do 4 sets total consisting of 10,12,14,16 reps (some do more reps than this). Right after you finish with that you grab a sledgehammer and swing on the tire for 30 seconds.

2.Next we grab some dumbbells (I grab 130s for each hand) and do the farmers walk for about 50-75 yards down and then back. Right after that with no rest we do 50 pushups.

3.Finally we do walking lunges for 50-75 yards with perfect form (if your knee is more that 2 inces off the ground you have to start all over- no short cuts or partial reps accepted). Right after that with no rest you do 25 box jumps (with the tire). Now this may seem easy but after completing the other exercises your legs feel like Jello. This last exercise takes everything you have to complete it. Sometimes we substitute this when we go to the park and train with running the hills or steps.

Talk about conditioning.........all I can say is you get a whole body workout including insane cardio. We switch up the training every 4-6 weeks or so and we take a vote to which exercises to add. Best of both worlds.

Just to give you a basic idea of the tire.

I use to do heavy lifting and I did get stronger but at the expense of my joints always hurting. Benching over 400lbs. and squatting over 600lbs. for my 6' 210 lb. body took its toll week after week. Training the way I do now I am still almost as strong as before but with none of the nagging pain. I still do bodybuilding and powerlifting in the gym but I prefer functional strength to hulking strength. Muscle is no good if you cannot use it for more than 20-30 seconds at a time imo. Just my 2 cents.

What are you guys training for the 300...'muscle confusion'?

If I did that kind of stuff with no rest at my age I'd get 'repetitive STRESS injuries' after a few sessions? Seems to me you'd better be under 35 if you're doing that for more than 30 minutes or else your joints will spank you!

I am close to 40 and kick most younger guys asses. It took me years to get to the point I am at now. I use to weigh 300 lbs. with a 44/46 inch waist and my diet consisted of Mickey Ds and however many 2 liters of Coke were in the house. I had no clue about fitness and did everything wrong at first; mainly from watching others workout and I took how they did the exercise and I then did it that way. Looking back, man was I stupid for doing it that way. Instead I learned the proper way of doing things. I became passionate about fitness and then took it to the next level by becoming certified in multiple areas. Now I combine different workouts to get the best bang for the buck workouts. I do the 300 workout (the final one consisting of 300 reps of varying exercises all in a row and timed- we try to beat our previous time). It's a good workout but imo it's missing a few things so I add more to up the difficulty a bit. My joints use to "spank" me until I stoppped lifting heavy all the time. I also started taking Cissus and Chia Seeds which also is very beneficial when training this way. I am a pretty laid back guy until it comes time to train. Then it's balls to the wall from start to finish. I leave nothing in the gym or outside once training is finished. Our group has a saying we live by, "Pain is weakness leaving the body so go hard or go home"!!

I have 2 lines of work, personal trainer and I do security for music venues around Richmond, for Vips in town visiting, and in the private sector. I mostly do personal training for free to help others less fortunate improve their health through fitness and diet. I got tired of all the soccer moms and women whos husbands were always out of town hiring me. It was good money but all those women wanted was someone to manipulate (they wanted someone to actually pay attention to them and listen, and also some hanky panky). I wasn't into that crap at all. I already have the love of my life thank you. I'm not your typical trainer that would "hit it and quit it". It got old really fast and wanted to use my skills to actually help people. In the security field when I tell people what I do they immediately think of a bouncer. I'm far from a bouncer. Imo a bouncer is no more than a glorified stick in the mud. They look all big and bad on the outside but inside they are hollow. Now for security there are a gazillion classes and certifications that must be acquired first before any reputable person or company will hire you. Fun line of work but it's 100x more mental than physical. I just love it when I am protecting a "person of importance" and we happen to show up at a club where there is an annoying bouncer working the door. Our detail already has preapproval to enter the club by the management or owners. Once we get to the entrance and state who we are, we're supposed to be able to gain access instantly. If the bouncer impedes our entry I let him know who we are AGAIN and that we have clearance to enter. If I still get flack the bouncer is removed till the VIP has entered and usually by the end of the night they are trying to kiss ****.

That sounds like some pretty major 'action' there. Were you in the military or police force at any point? And you're right about joints...to an extent..I'm in my 50s, still lift a bit heavy...I take joint supplements in order to do that! But I find that I can no longer jog regularly without taking out my knees over time...especially on hard surfaces. Squats...out of the question, probably have a little damage in one knee.

Even regular biking can sometimes inflame one knee but not always? Stretching and warming up, essential if I'm not going to have a trip to my doctor.

I should also add that my body did not exhibit these problems till I was 44 or so...so you're still a young one! But, then again, you're in much better shape than I ever was at your age.

I was in the miliary yes, Navy. Have been out for years now thankfully. Other than my new found hobby, Audio, fitness was my hobby. I enjoy it that much. The bigger the challenge or the harder it is the more I enjoy it. Doesn't matter how in shape you are or are not or age imo, in the long run it's about overall health. Don't get me wrong I have a vice or two and have a splurge day where I eat pretty much anything I want. No point in working out this hard only to be denied access to some of the best tasting junk food on the planet, lol. As I always tell my clients, "everything in moderation". Well, almost everything:o.

I use whatever dumbbells I have laying around. Want a challenge? Try doing pushups using round rather than hex dumbbells...
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

Okay so my initial test is done and i did better than i thought i would. I am a level 2, and i did 12 pushups. I could have went further, but did not want to risk injury, due to using muscles i dont use on a daily basis.

Sounds good. I missed my mark, had to start a few times....know what you mean about unused muscles took two tries before I was loosened up enough to get 40 out. I will pay for that tomorrow. And also have to admit I'm getting too heavy because I've always been able to get to 50 in the past...but not at 220, evidently?
