Wired? Why my PS3 cannot output Dolby TrueHD to my Denon Receiver through HDMI?
I just hooked up my PS3 ( 80GB ) to my new Denon AVR-989 receiver. And realized that there is no Dobly TrueHD signal to my Denon receiver. I checked PS3 set up, and there is no Dobly TrueHD output option through the HDMI port.
Anyone know this issue?
thanks

The receiver needs to have 1.3 HDMI input to do that.

yes, my receiver has 1.3 HDMI. It's a Denon AVR-989.
Looks like PS3 cannot output Dolby TrueHD signal to the receiver via HDMI 1.3 cable.Sony BRAVIA W-Series KDL-52W4100

You only need hdmi 1.1 to get TrueHD from the ps3 to the receiver. It internally decodes TrueHD and DTS-HD MA to multichannel PCM and sends it to the receiver in this form over hdmi. It's the same PCM that a receiver would produce if it decoded it, just saves the trouble of having the receiver do it or having everything be hdmi 1.3 for bitstreaming. But the receiver will show multichannel PCM or something like that for the input signal, not TrueHD. But the quality of the decode is the same. And the receiver can then use the PCM for all its digital processing (surround modes, etc.) just as if it had decoded the TrueHD itself.

PS3 can't bitstream the high-res formats for decoding in the receiver. Like Cheddar said, it decodes them internally then sends multichannel PCM. You're still getting high resolution sound, so you're good.Equipment list:

Also be sure that you have gone through the firmware update witha new system. DTS Master Audio decoding is only available in the updates. I went through this also, as the other have said, PS3 has a physical limitation that it cannot bitstream the HD code. You have set the PS3 output to PCM.
This is a good opportunity to ask a question to everyone.....are we missing any sound or video quality using the PS3 as a blueray for movies? Does PS3 really have good video and audio processing or are we better off with a dedicated high quality blueray player???Parasound HCA-2003A & 2205A

Not only is this question somewhat off topic from the original thread, the assumption is very misleading. There are a wide range of blu-ray dedicated players available in the market today. Some good, some not so good. And most do not offer the quality, upgradability, or support (because of sheer numbers in the market and video game hardware that is overkill for a blu-ray player) of the ps3. A better question would be to ask which new dedicated players finally match or exceed the ps3's video and audio capabilities and would the average viewer who wasn't looking at paused side-by-side video even notice...but that is a topic you should ask in another thread. -
+1 on what Cheddar says. Other than the onboard decoding (which I love due to my older gen. receiver) I can't think of a better all around player. I've just now started getting into the music and video streaming with it. Also this year Harmony is going to be selling a remote plug in so you'll be able to use full functionality with their remotes including powering on/off. No more seperate bluetooth remote if you don't want it._____________________________________________

This is completely false information. You are confusing decoding (uncompressing) TrueHD and DTS-HD MA with receiver side digital processing and eventually digital to analog conversion for your analog speakers. The decoding process to PCM is a straightforward process and you DO NOT lose any audio information when you decode a compressed TrueHD or DTS-HD MA signal. That's why they are called 'lossless' formats. TrueHD and DTS-HD MA uncompress to the SAME PCM no matter where this process takes place.
And no matter where you decode (uncompress) the signals to PCM, your receiver/pre-amp is going to have to apply its digital processing and DAC conversion before it gets to the speakers. Some dedicated players can do an internal DAC conversion and dump it to multichannel analog outs, bypassing the need for hdmi. And this WILL be a lossy conversion, followed by another lossy analog to digital conversion if the receiver/pre still has to do some digital processing, followed by another lossy digital to analog conversion and out to the speakers. But since the ps3 doesn't have the option of multichannel analog outs and transmits digital PCM to the receiver/pre via hdmi, there is no loss of audio information until the receiver/pre starts applying its own digital processing of the PCM and its DAC conversion.
And if you're getting horrible video from a dedicated blu-ray player, the last place you should try and improve it is with the video processing in a receiver/pre. You are much better off getting a player that can give you a pristine 1080p picture right off the blu-ray disk than relying on digital manipulation to 'correct' a bad source signal. You can't create what isn't there in the first place. You can only make the picture less annoying, not more accurate in the reproduction of the original information on the blu-ray disk. -

The ps3 audio is very very good IMO and there is no stand alone player that can match its upgrade capacity. -

Cheddar is quite right, one of the reasons that I chose the PS3 as my Blu-ray is that my AVR has HDMI 1.1 and I didn't feel like spending another 1000 or so to upgrade. LPCM sound coming from the PS3 is converted by the DACs in my AVR which are probably better than most of the DACs available in sub 500 dollar Blu-ray players. So, I, for one, am happy.

And another +1 for cheddar. Even though my AVR does 1.3 HDMI, I chose the PS/3 for blu-ray because it makes a damn fine blu-ray player, in addition to having a couple of other abilitiesTurntable: Empire 208

+1 on cheddar, cnh, and quad's perspective. I love my PS3 for a Blu-Ray player it does a fantastic job. It works with all the latest HD formats and the picture quality is amazing as well. Not to mention all the other stuff it does as well like quad pointed out.HT Rig

Here's what you do to get dolby true hd. Go to your video settings on the ps3. Scroll down to hdmi audio output for blue ray and switch it to linear pcm. When you put in a blue ray, wait until the movie is started. Not the title screen, wait until the feature has started, and push select on your ps3 controller. In the top right it will tell you what audio format is being used.
I had the same problems you are having, and someone finally walked me through what you need to do. It was driving me nuts, but now I am very happy using the ps3. I just wish I could bitstream, so that I could see my receiver say, dolby true HD, or DTS-master audio, instead of multi channel in.Denon 1909, want to upgrade for pre outs
