I will use my current R50 as surround.

Huge upgrade. I hate to be the one to mention it - but you will get more of an upgrade by adding an amp for your A9's. The center and surrounds will be fine powered from your AVR, but the A9's are huge with alot of drivers. They will really benefit from a dedicated 2 channel amp. (I highly recommend used and it does not have to be expensive)

    Congrats on the upgrade.

Yes it will be an upgrade. But you won't have expandibility with that Denon receiver. It doesn't have preouts so you couldn't add a separate amp later on down the line.

So if you could bump up your receiver to the 989 that would be great.

    cfrizz,

You have pretty much described my situation. I have the Denon AVR 2807 (similar to the 987) series...that year the AVR 887 HAD PRE-OUTS. The next year the 888/889 dropped them....bad move! I added a 2 channel power amp to that Denon...and that pretty much did the trick. Though the 9s can be powered by the 889...they can handle phenomenal amounts of power and those bass drivers are heavy duty...need more power to get pumped up. If you can slide up a model, you'd future proof yourself, and get a couple more 'features'.

Definitely add an amp to get those 7inch drivers moving in those A9s the way they should. They beg for power and love it.

The LSI's are Polks top of the line speakers. You will HAVE to get a receiver with preouts & an amp to drive those big boys. Your Denon will not get the job done & you will put both the receiver & speakers at risk if you push the volume too high.

I wondered why there was so many LSI speakers refurbished from polk. I have a feeling that a lot of people don't realize they are 4 ohm speakers and push them on there crappy HT receivers only to damage them. You rarely ever see RTi A9's on ebay.

    Bluecomet.

That's an interesting insight. One can only imagine what first time buyers are doing to LSIs? It's' also possible a lot are returns because people don't realize that they need a 4 ohm amp to 'actually' hear what those speakers sound like?

I personally like the LSi line. There is alot to be said for the RTiA's as well though. If you call home theater a toss up, I would say it comes down to music preference. If Jazz, classical is your thing - LSi's may have it. If rock / metal - RTiA's.

Those are basic generalizations of course, but they really do have quite a different sound. They are both great speakers - and which you prefer is up to you.

You should have an amp for either - but with the LSi's (if you are going for a complete home theater) you should really have an amp for each channel as opposed to the RTiA's where you could get by with just a 2 channel amp for the 9's.

I have two LSi9's and they sound to my ears far superior to the RTi A5's I first tried. Haven't compared to the A9's but if sound accuracy is your thing the LSis are much better.

I am (as we discussed in the other thread) powering these just with an AV receiver (I know, heresy), the Onkyo Tx-SR806 that a lot of people have talked about. I never use it above 0 dB (and usually have it down at -10 to -25 dB) and they sound spectacular, I have to say. I'm sure with an external amp they'd sound better but so far the system sounds so much better than anything I've ever had before, I am very pleased with it. (I am not using the apparently bogus 4 ohm setting, just leaving it at the standard 6 ohm setting. So far it's not even running particularly warm so I feel pretty safe so far).

If I were you, I would not get any AV receiver that can't handle 4 ohm speakers or at the very least have preouts. The Onkyos above the 706 and the Yamahas at the higher end are rated for it; rumor has it that their engineers claim Ultra2 certified Denons and the HK AVR 354 can handle it but their manuals do not say they can.
