PS3 audio... dead fiber or software?

So my PS3 is hooked up with a fiber (and analog now too) to my receiver as it doesn't do anything HDMI. For the longest time, it sounded amazing on fiber for COD4 and the surround was crazy accurate. Then a couple weeks ago, it started cutting in and out in a game then would go silent. The next day, same thing. Next day, same thing. Once the audio goes out, nothing gets it to give sound again. I swapped cables, nothing. Changed inputs on the receiver, nothing. It's the PS3. I hook up the analog audio cables and I get sound. Set the receiver to PLII Game and it's "eh" at best. Then the other night, I had the analog cut out but it was only once. Has anyone heard of this happening on the PS3? Is this hardware or software? Converse...

Could be faulty but I know the Ps3 only outputs one thing at a time. The Analog will not work if Digital is turned on. It sucks 2 if you wanna do some whole house sharing. You have to change the setting in Audio. Check that first before buying any new cables or taking it in for service.

Try to double check your audio settings, that happened to me before. I returned to the shop where I bought the PS3 and asked for their help. It was actually some mere settings.

Other than turning on the optical output, what other settings are there that could be missed?
