    Wow.

It's at the top of my Netflix queue and I had three movies return today, so we'll see if I make the cut. The way my Netflix new releases have been going lately, I'm going to guess not; the top 9 movies in my queue are currently a short or long wait. Absurd.

I watched Slumdog and was surprised it did as well as it did at the Oscars. Although there really wasn't much to choose from. The last great movie I saw was The Shawshank Redeption.

When did you watch it, last week? That movie came out 15 years ago, if it's the last great movie you saw then you just don't like movies.

I watched this last night. After all the hype, I was really expecting something special. It was interesting, solid storytelling about places and cultures I wasn't too familiar with, a love story and had some pretty dark elements intermixed. I found that it didn't live up to the hype. It held my interest and I engaged, but there wasn't any WOW factor. I preferred Benjamin Button. I enjoyed this one on a par with Australia, a solid effort though schmaltzy. Since this film gave a fresh look at places we don't usually see, alot of people got behind this film. The hype machine carried it through all the awards, but IMO there were several films out there just as Oscar worthy.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)

    sheesh.. it's just a movie... ;)

I want to know from people here what is "a good" movie?

sometimes movies are good because they are different. This story would not work if it was say set in Kansas or anywhere in the USofA. It's gritty, in your face violence.. but it's very well done.

oh yeah I bought it on BD on Wed. :)

the hype was worth it IMHO.

Just rented it. Will check in later. ...."too foreign"....what does that mean?

Would that mean that Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai was not the model for the Magnificent Seven (one of the classic American Westerns)?

Maybe there is something in the air. Having said that, I don't expect much--a friend of mine who is an Indie filmmaker is still scratching his head over how this got best picture!

I watched it, and wasn't completely blown away. I won't own it. Nothing to do with it being a bollywood product or foreign, rather, it is just a typical drama that could have been shot in the slum of Manila, Jakarta, or Bangkok. Poverty suck, no question about it. If the appeal is to show poverty, life, and luck, there are enough of those to go around in this world. Acting is good: extremely good to deserve that many Oscars? No.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I loved the movie. I think it's on par with Benjamin Button, but of a different flavor. Then again maybe it's because I have the hots for the main actress in Slumdog.
