We do not have plenty of oil and it is not readily available. If it were we would have developed it. Yeah, destroying the environment to "get more oil" just so someone can drive an SUV "because they want to" is wrong and I have the right to my opinion as much as you. The land, oceans and environment belong to all of us...not just those that want to exploit it for energy. I see it as inherently wrong that in the span of a few generations, we are on schedule to completely consume a resource that took millions upon millions of years to create. I am a staunch conservative and pro-capitalist...but I am also a conservationist. I want my grand children and great grand children to enjoy the beauty and wonders of this planet as much as I have been able to do. I want them to see a whale, or a Bengal tiger, or an African Elephant in its natural habitat as I have been able to do. I want them to see the Great Smokey Mountains, the Alaskan wilderness, the Grand Canyon as I have been able to do. There has to be a balance between sustaining the population of the Earth and protecting the environment for the future generations. We as Americans on a per capita basis consume a gross disproportionate amount of the natural resources of the planet. As other countries develop, that will change and we will not have the use of those recourses just because we can pay for them as is the case in the past. We must develop methods of sustainable, renewable, plentiful energy. This is for our own good for national security, for self sustainability, for quality of life for the nation as a whole…and oil is a short term patch and not the answer. If conservation is needed to get to that end and one can’t drive their vehicle “of choice”…sorry…they don’t have the right to use and use and use something till it is all gone. That is short sighted, selfish and just plain wrong IMO.

Nowhere did I suggest to use and use untill it's gone, and yes we do have alot of oil only conservationist won't let us get it,and no,you don't have to destroy the environment to do it.Believe it or not,we agree more on this than disagree, just the means to an end is were we differ.Cars have been around for 100 years now,the sun still comes up,tree's and the grass are still green, nothing has changed. When an electric car comes down the pike that will do well in cold weather, perform as well as it's gas powered cousin,I may consider it.I agree oil is a short term patch, but no one has come up with a solution for a stable source of energy.I understand you think being beholden to arabs for oil is somehow related to national security, but we don't even buy most our oil from them.If you want to talk national security, you should be more concerned about who holds the mortgage on this country.[china]The recent collapse of our banking system should be a clue as to what someone can do when they pull out their coin.
A sustainable, renwable source of energy sounds nice, what is it? Wind and solar will work for fringe area's but not major metro area's.We can't drill for our own oil, can't build any new nuclear plants, coal is too dirty,I think your putting the cart before the horse.Come up with an alternative source of energy, then start weeding out,not the other way around.Funny you mention you want your kids to see the Alaskan wilderness. You mean it's still there?? With all those bad oil companies and pipelines,it's still there?Ok,sarcasm,I know, but you get my point.I am all for conservation and capitalism, within bounderies. If we can get our own resources without hurting the environment, then why not? I find it ironic, that conservationist, complain about Suv's,but will take a private jet to washington to complain about it.
The amount of fuel used in private jets in one year is more than cars have used in the last 100,but lets attack Suv's,makes sense.Isn't that why we have tele-conferencing?There is extreme's in everything,I just think conservationist take it too far, sometimes.Obviously we disagree on some things and I apologize if I sounded pissy,we are both passionate in our views and we can at least agree to disagree.Damn,I'm tired!:)
