Elite BDP-05

Thinging about getting this player to match my sc-07 AVR. Any thoughts? Is this a good blu ray player. I'm currently using a ps3 and Sony bdp-350.

I know the new players are coming out soon but I can get it for $399 brand new with warranty.

    In my opinion, PS3 is the BEST BluRay player to date, unless there are some nice integration between SC07 and BDP05 (like HDMI enabled features) that u r interested..

    I am not sure about the pioneer elites but I had a PS3 and now have a panny BD35. The panny BD35 in my opinion excels as a bluray/SD DVD player. I like it even better than the PS3.
    Also look out for the oppo BD83 bluray player coming out around mid-April. That one is going to raise a storm.

    Malcom, Is it that the features in the BD that u like or the picture quality. Up-convertion on PS3 s is amazing for me..

    Agreed the oppo BD83 bluray player will be the one I purchase if it provides full support for DVD-A. I have been waiting a while for the format war to play out and then for someone to come out with a truly universal player before I bought either a HD tv or a player, and I am glad I did prices of HD tv's are better than they have ever been, quality has improved greatly with 1080p sets becoming reasonbly priced. I purchased an Oppo HD-970 earlier because it plays CD's DVD's SACD's DVD-A's and I am very happy with it's performance at it's price range. Sure it's cheap looking but hey it was cheap :D and plays just about all formats. I had no desire to have to upgrade every 6 months nor do I want to have an AV rack that is 10" feet tall to contain all my assorted players and audio gear, nor do I want to have a basketful of remotes.

    Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

    Go for the new elite BD player, I'm going for the new model next month myself as they will be 2.0 profile and should go excellent with the 05/07 AVRs. PS3 is ok for BD player but it wont bitstream audio. Granted it works well, but I need better performance in my BD player than what the PS3 is capable of.

    Big fan of Grey Goose with Cran Raspberry juice and Remy Martin VSOP with Apple Juice. Enjoy.

    The 51 is listed for a very good price on Amazon, also keep in mind the 51 doesnt decode DTS-MA as of now

    The Elite model(23FD) seems to have been pushed back mid- May, June time frame, but the 120, 320 are listed on Amazon for pre-order. I may go for the 320 though I really want the 23FD which will be in the 500-699 ballpark. The 23FD will feature Wolfson DACS, both the 320 and 23FD should offer some pretty good PQ, faster load times than previous, etc.

    If you can get a good deal on one, It's a very nice Blu ray player. It's slow though and it's one of the things I don't like about it.
    if your running analog cd, it's amazing but it shares the same exact DAC's as the 07. There is no Ethernet on the back so no BD live support or firmware upgrades. You have to burn firmware on a disc then install it manually, that sucks.
    If you have a older receiver or preamp, this is a hot ticket but not really the case with the SC-07. I would not buy one for myself now that I got a SC-07.

    The new Elite players are coming out and are suppose to be faster and have Ethernet so that might be the ticket, I'm holding out. And the Oppo 83 also looks very good.

    I've really tossed around the idea of getting the BDP-05 myself but the slow start-up times as well as loading discs killed it for me. As with Shearard, I'm waiting it out till the new Elite 23 hits the streets. Supposed to be faster load times as well as the ability to do firmware upgrades via the internet. As Mantis said, the Oppo may be a strong contender as well, from the reviews I've been reading on the player from the early adopters, this machine is supposed to be the cats ****, blazing speeds and apparently amazing at everything you throw at it. Only time will tell.

    I got the email from Oppo to try out the 83, I wish they would have picked me then I could have tested the **** out of it myself. But everything I have read like you, it seems this might be the one. the Elite 23 also looks very promising. I'm happy with my Ps3 and I found out there is new control so I may just stick with it a little longer.

    I have a Pioneer BDP-05FD player. It's not perfect and it does have its share of issues... It appears that the Japanese-made players are more reliable than the Malaysian players, but the Malaysian players respond a few seconds faster.

    Pros:
    1. Killer picture, better than the PS3, it's noticeable on a large display
    2. The Wolfson DACs really give you a nice sound when playing back CDs thru the analog outputs. I feel the sound is better than Burr-Browns.
    3. Upscaling standard DVDs is better than the HQV chips (Reon/Realta) IMHO.

    Cons:
    1. Load times are slow... not as slow as 1st generation players, but current players are faster
    2. Layer change on regular DVDs can be abysmal, some movies can take as long as three seconds, other are not even noticeable...
    3. No internal DTS-HD Master decoding yet (promised on a firmware update since August 2008)
    4. Only profile 1.1 compatible (I Don't care for profile 2.0 so this is a non-issue)
    5. Player is sensitive, some discs have playback issues where the player does not recognize them. This is unit dependent, some players have problems, some don't.
    6. Quite often, you have to press the remote buttons twice before the player responds. It's as if the player is awaiting for confirmation.

    Overall, I like the player, enough where the pros outweighs the cons, enough where i now have a Pioneer BDP51FD (non-Elite version) as well. Especially where you can probably buy the BDP51FD for under $300. At that price, it's a good deal...

    Will the 51 bitstream all the HD audio formats, I have my SC07 to do the decoding. Just need to know if it will bitstream DTS MA, True HD, etc? Thanks

    Be advised that the new generation of Pioneer BD players loose dedicated 2 channel analog outs. You still get mult-channel outputs, but the loss of dedicated 2-channel outputs is a deal killer for me.

    Also, the newer generation may not use the raved about Wolfson DACs. So if you like analog outputs and the Wolfson's - another potential deal killer.

    As for the newer Oppo - check out avs forum....lots of rumours of bugs.

    For now - I'm sticking with my fast reliable PS3....but I am waiting for the 'perfect' BD player....if there is or will be such a thing. :(

    H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

    I have the 05 and I absolutely love it. Once the DTS-HDMA firmware comes, I will be that much happier. My fingers are still crossed. PQ is superb!

    I just don't understand how somebody can watch movies on a PS3 as noisy as that thing is.

    23FD will have the Wolfson DACS on board, 4 to be exact. The flagship 09 BD player has 8.

    Mine is in my cabinet and I don't notice the fan noise. I sit about 11 to 12 feet from it.

    I hope you are right...I was just commenting on some conflicting info I got over at avs where it was not definitive from Pioneer's spec sheets that the 23FD retained the Wolfson DACs.

    I've been eyeing this player. If they can solve the BD slow loading and the layer change delays for DVDs, I may pop for this.
