Shoot out: Dynaudio Vs. Tyler Acoutics
Intro: I've had my Dynaudio Focus 220's for about a year now and have been about 95% satisfied with them. My only complaint is that I felt they sounded a tad lean when listening to some orchestral music. This motivated me to try something bigger, so I pulled the trigger on Tyler Acoustics Signature System, 2-piece. The bass modules are absolutely Huge and weighing 100 lbs each! Each one has 2- 8" woofers. These Bohemeths made the Dynaudios look like childs play. When I hooked them up to my Audio Zone chip amp monoblocks, I had some problems and found out from Ty that the speakers aren't compatible with chip amps. So this shoot out was done using a McCormack Delux Edition, Power-DNA-1, which is at 180wpc solid state amp. My second issue was that all the bass was loading up too much and over-powering my room. I moved my whole freckin' entertainment system to the other side of the room, which greatly improved the bass issue.
I have to start by saying that the Danes retail new for $3k and the Tylers retailed new for $6k (they're discontined now). In order to make it a fair challenge I used my Velo 15" sub (retails $1800 new) with the Danes to take care of the low end and turned the sub off when listening to the Tylers.
I listened to Sara Mclauchlan- Afterglow live, Tool,- 10,000 days, Vivaldi- 4 Seasons, Coltrane and Hartman, Kd Lang 49th Paralell & Respighi- Pine of Rome.
Results: I found this to be true no matter what I listened to.... The Tylers had a Huge sound that easily filled the whole room with a very tactile experience. The tweeters had excellent extention, detail and resolution which far surpassed the Danes. Although there were a couple instances were the highs sounded a tad too etchy on the Tylers. The Danes tweeters sounded smoother with rounder edges and not as detailed- more polite. The mids is where the Tylers Really shined. They were able to create this 3-D holographic image and the musical notes had a texture to them. I've never experienced this so dramaticly before. They also did an excellent job with separating out each instrument. In comparison the Dynaudios sounded veiled and wasn't able to produce the same excitement. Now the Bass.... The Tyler bass modules are crossed at 40 hz and produce a ton of bass, which is good, because I love bass, BUT the bass sounded a tad too big (even with port holes plugged) and I couldn't tame them, even with different placements. I think bass traps would probably do the trick. Even with this the bass sounded GOOOOD, especially listening to Tool. Overall the bass sounded clean and low and could uses more tightening up. This is where the Danes & Velo combo really shined because they out did the Tylers. The Danes/Velo bass was SUPER Clean, tight and went ridiculously low. This combo seemed to have a quicker and more coherent low end.
The best all around combo was using the Tyer monitors paired with the velo- the best of both worlds. So there you have it!
Note: The Dynaudios and the Audio Zone mono blocks are a synergistic match, so the level of resolution and basically everything is improved when switching to this amp. With this combination Vs. the Tyler, its a much closer race, but I'd still give the nod to the Tylers due to their incredible mid-range.

I've always found Dyna's to be on the bland side, long live Tylers!"He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

Agreed Dan. I think it's an apple to oranges comparison. The Dane Focus 220's will be my next speaker someday.sorry Bro but the Dyn's are sexier.

Very nice. Those Dyns didn't stand a chance against the Tylers.
I'd suggest you do some more fiddling with the crossover on the bass modules. I'll bet you can get them to sound as good as the Dyn/Velo combo with a little tweaking.
Another option is to sell your bass modules to me. Man! This thread made me super* excited about tomorrow!
I cant wait!
Thanks for the killer write up and glad that you are enjoying those Linbrooks!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

I had the same thought. I was trying to figure out how I could hook up the bass modules to the Velo SMS-1 bass management system. Then I could tweak that sucker until my hearts content. I'm getting stuck because the line out on the sms is an RCA connection (which would typically plug into the sub LFE INput.)
Another idea was to separate the speakers and keep the the monitors where they are at on speaker stands, then move the bass modules around to different locations for the optimal spot.
I'd have no idea how to tweak the crossover in the Bass modules. -
sorry Bro but the Dyn's are sexier.

Ha! I have to agree with you there Dan. The Dyna's are totally sexy! I'd mount them if I could. -

I already know those Super Towers are gonna be Awesome. The monitors alone aren't enough bass, the bass modules are too much bass (at least for our rooms). I bet the Towers will be just Right! -

It's all about sound quality in the end. I'd mount them 2 but if the Tyler sound better , then while I'm mounting them, I'm listening to the Tylers.

Nice review.....thanks.
It's another good confirmation to keep my Tyler's, at least for now. Seems likely going up in cost might be required to find something better.

Regarding the room filling sound and detail...I love it.
