I've been looking around for some speaker stands, but had a tough time finding anything I liked and that could be custom made to my specs. Enter Skylan, http://www.skylanstands.com/stands.htm

I spoke with Noel, the owner, about my needs and after a brief while he agreed to make them to my specs for what I consider to be a bargain price. After a few weeks passed by, they arrived on my doorstep today. Taking the pieces out of a very well packed custom made box I could see that these are a relatively simple, yet ingenious design. The tops and bottoms are MDF, the columns are made from a square plastic type material with rounded edges and the whole deal is bolted together using all thread rods. There are holes in the top plate (seals provided) to fill the columns after assembly with your choice of damping material and they come with both spikes and flat type feet. The craftsmanship is top notch and the satin black finish is expertly done, appearing to be very durable. The pictures on their site do not do these stands justice. I can best describe them as having an understated eloquence.

If you're in the market for quality stands, I highly recommend you check out Skylan for your needs.

Couldn't you have made something comparable or better in your shop?

May I ask what height you chose?

Those do look very nice. I especially liked the first one, SM26.

I've always heard that bookshelves (for 2 channel listening) should be ear level. I guess it depends on how tall your bookshelf speakers are and how tall one is, but given that I'm 6'2 and my desk chair (my listening position) is fairly high, I'm wondering if 26' or even 28' inches would be tall enough. It seems like they would be much lower than ear level.

    Any thoughts?

I suppose I could have made something, but after design time, material acquisition and labor time are factored in and considering that I don't really make things other than replacement pieces, I believe my choice to purchase to be the right move.

Sure, they have an overall height of 35.5 inches. The tweeters in my office rig speakers are located at the bottom instead of the top like most. Therefore, I wanted the tweeters at ear level when I'm sitting in my chair. My stands are the two post version.

well you have to remember he only works at night, also he has to keep the noise down to avoid attracting attention considering the blood business he must tend to on certain nights, I smelled of garlic for a reason at the last Fest.

He's bad, He's nationwide and He bites.

Glad you like em Jesse, good info as I am beginning to feel a small jones building for some Harbeth.

I always liked their stands as well. They seem so much stronger than most of what is out there. Must also be advantageous for Americans to buy given how low our dollar has been lately. I look forward to the photos when they arrive.

I've been using Skylan Sky24D stands for about a year now on my Dynaudio's. (http://cgim.audiogon.com/i/vs/s/f/1235424718.jpg)

If you use sand be careful. I used play sand to fill them (as per Noel's suggestion) however it was moist and wasn't going in very well. I phoned Noel and he suggested I bake the sand on a cookie sheet....I could only fit so much sand per cookie sheet. At one point I had 3 casserole dish's on the go with two cookie sheets to boot. I had to do this in sequence as the sand was too warm coming out of the oven...so I'd pop the cooked sheet's in my freeze to let cool. Three more plates would go in the oven on low heat for 15minutes.

After an hour and a half I had one stand half filled. I literally sat down and started laughing at myself...what a hobby...I thought. Nobody would ever understand. After what seemed like three hours both stands were filled using two full bags of play sand. Towards the end however I was starting to rush the process (it was late and a weeknight) and started dumping sand that hadn't cooled enough. I started listening to the system again and suddenly wondered aloud if the stands were ok...sure enough I put my hand up to the poles and they were hot...so much so I thought I might melt the structure and warp them.

I went to bed and the next day everything was fine. A crazy story I guess but one I'll never forget...it was a hilarious and long night.

If you use a transport you might consider his isolation platforms, I use the cones and deck for my transport and ceramic feet for my integrated. The Platform made a striking difference for the transport, no difference reported on the amp however.

I doubt I'll post any. Skylan's site has a bunch of pics for your viewing pleasure.

LOL.....dumpster would be a good idea.

Lush, great story...put a smile on my face. I'm filling them with lead shot first and may add sand on top of that, not sure. If I do, it will be dry to start with. ;)
