You are going to have to be more specific with that question, friend.

If you are asking why Google it is because they allow their employees 20% of their time to work on their own projects, this would by one of them and the reason they do that is to spark innovation. ;)

Okay DVD ISO images is a HUGE support! Mute please keep us updated. I would actually buy something like this.

And I think this is in response to the Popcorn Hour media server.

I gave it a shot. Pretty cool so far. We'll have to see if this will replace TVersity. I dual boot so I think I'll definately keep it for the OS X side.

I don't think Google has anything to do with the code itself, other than providing a host for the developers. I could be wrong but Google Code to me looks like Google's version of SourceForge.

Looks like I was right: http://internetducttape.com/2006/07/28/google-code-project-hosting-a-replacement-for-sourceforge/

So this project is not "Google PS3 Media Server", just "PS3 Media Server".

Ah alright well I do know that Google employees do get that chance to work on side projects etc. which is where Google Maps and Gmail came from.

Well it is completely free and takes just a second to install so it might be worth it to try it out.

OK, how about this. What is the purpose of this? What does it benefit to the non-computer 1337? lol

Oh haha OK, well basically it allows you to play your media on your computer through your network to your PS3. The PS3 is somewhat limited in the formats it supports but this application vastly increases that support.

Okay so my computer crashed big time a few days ago. I barely got it running and decided to try the PS3 media server while i wait for my new hard drive to arrive.

    1) VERY easy setup! Turn on PS3...tell media server where your files are stored....done!
    2) It still does not read certain .avi movies. The 360 will but the PS3 will not...even with this program.
    3) I tried out some .iso dvd's i had....worked like a charm.
    4) Music...no problem. I actually think it sounds a little richer than the WMP codec...not sure if it is better or not but I think I hear more clarity. I have no flac files so I did not try that.

Overall I give it a huge thumbs up if your into .iso files and current .avi files. (if you dont know how to get them then never mind.) A solid 8 out of ten for ease of use, and nice gui to work with on your media PC.

Would be an absolute 10/10 if it would play all .avi files like the 360. If you are on the fence about these type of programs definitely try this one first before Tversity. Way easier to use.

    UPDATE!

After playing with this excellent program I noticed something. All my .avi files are stored on a hard drive dedicated just for this. When I started looking at my files/movies again I noticed another folder within those files called "transcode". So I tried playing my files i knew did not work under my normal section, went into the transcode folder, found the shows and clicked on those files....BINGO files worked. And were flawless, no change in audio or screen resolution.

So my initial grade of 8/10 has now changed to a solid 10/10. Excellent program! Easily blows Tversity out of the water. A one step download without having to get any codec downloads....just fantastic. Cannot say enough about it. I AM SOLD!!

This is definitely worthy of its own thread. I could go on and on why the ps3 media server is so great. Truly amazed on what the developers did with it.

do I need to do anything on my PC to get it and the PS3 to communicate through the router? I'm networking illiterate.

Seriously no. I really do not think so. As long as your computer is on the same router as the ps3 then it should be a snap. Just download the app and start it. It will look for the ps3, if it does not find it the program will ask you to turn on the ps3. I went upstairs and turned on my ps3, when I came back down to my computer it had already recognized it. Then I went to the "navigation/share settings" tab, and on the bottom you will see a "shared folders" area. Click on the "+" button to add the folders where your media is stored. Boom thats it...just leave it running in your system tray (by your clock) and you are set. Every time you turn on your PS3 it will immediately recognize the program. Very easy. I did turn on the DTS stream in the transcode tab just in case I have a DTS movie file. Other than that you are good to go.

I've used TVersity and now been using this for about a month. PS3 media server is heads and shoulders above TVersity. Only problem so far is I still can't get it to stream High Def files without stuttering. Has anyone done this successfully? Please share your settings as I'd love to have this capablility.

    Fongolio,

Try this thread out. See if it helps you. http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1544

Also I really think in order for you to get any program to work properly like this and Tversity is to be hard wired if at all possible. I always have thought WiFi and streaming where sketchy at best.

Upgrade your network to wired gigabit and CPU to a dual core processor. Stuttering will go away.

I have this installed and it has found my PS3. The PS3 recognizes the media server. I have my music on a seperate hard drive. When I click on the hard drive on the PS3 all my CD's are listed. When I click on a certain CD it says 'There are no titles'.:confused:

Any help would be appreciated. I have been trying to set my PS3 up as a media server for awhile.

I have it also as I'm looking to transition from Windows to Linux on me desktops. I have to say it is easy to setup but compared to other programs I have used it is very slow. Slow as in response, not streaming. Maybe that Java code it is written in is taking its toll. Too early to tell what the final verdict is but overall it is positive so far.

Finding photos, music and video, Google Media Server makes content from your PC available over your network to DLNA devices, such as the Playstation 3, Go back to the PC and go to the Google Media Server Admin page and click on Devices. You should see your PS3's IP Address. Click on the box to allow access,
