Does anyone else run into this? One night you listen and everything is glorious. The next night everything is more than you could ever want. A few days later it is even better. Later on in the month you play a favorite at the same volume level and you feel it is obviously terrible. You turn the volume up and it sounds thin. You try at a lower volume and it sounds weak. No matter what you do it sucks. Later on you start back at the top. Tonites music sucked. No matter what it didn't do anything for me. Is it me or does this happen to others?

No. I just enjoy the music. Whether it's on my HT system or my 2 channel rig or like now listening through a cheap set of headphones to MP3s on my hard drive of AC/DC (For Those About To Rock")."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

I dont usually have times when my setup is letting me down, but there are definitely those days when i cant find anything to listen to after paging through 150 or so tracks

can we agree, then, that this phenomenon is more psychological than reality? I am also experiencing this, even as I typed, but I know one thing (in my case), it has nothing to do with the gears. It is more related to my state of mind and mood....I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I bought a stereo, wow, TWO speakers! I'm listening to this thing and think, hey, this sounds like ****. So I got the quad system, with the four speakers, and this was more to my liking.. for awhile. Then I got the dodecaphonic system, with the 10 speakers, and I'm listening to this thing.. this sounds like ****, too. The other one was **** I, this one is **** II. So now I have the googlephonic, with the highest number of speakers before infinity... this sounds like ****. So I thought, hey, maybe its the needle. I had the typical diamond needle, so I got the moon rock needle, cost me three million bucks... so now I have the googlephonic stereo with the moon rock needle.. OK for car stereo, wouldn't want it in my house.
Or something close to that, Steve Martin, 1979. -
I put some left over greenbean cassarole, some brussel sprouts and leftover meat loaf into my Mr. Fusion and screwed up my flux capacitor. My system sounds like crap. I really miss the final 1000000dB gain stage!!! My 800i's are really suffering.
Can anyone HELP me find a replacement parts?

I find certian times of the day my system sounds different....worse for a better term.At night I think I get the best sound quality......I'm not even going to comment.
But The little meter on the front of my HTS5000 is higher at night then during the day.......must be a power related thing.
I also have to be in the "correct mood" to enjoy certian types of music.May sound tipical, but if I'm not in the right mood for a type of music,it sounds bad to me.Follow that??I know what I wanna say, but I'm having a terrible time putting it into words. It's a mood thing I guess.
This has been less and less since I owned the Rotel gear and Now B&K.Same goes with the Lsi's.I don't think I experienced this I will call it a "syndrome" since I owned Denon and Rt's.......Dan

Dan,
I went to the tweeter customer appreciation weekend this past week, and was looking at the ref 50/ref 200.7 combo, audition these two just for the hell of it, and was very impressed. They are willing to let it the pair go for $6250 out-the-door (I figured a good $300 saving, just to cover sales tax.) Once I regained my composure, I decided to walk away. Phew, it was a close call! It was the silver plates pair too.....that was a great deal, don't you think?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -

I got mr mac going***WAREMTAE*** -
polkatese,
yes the new B&K ref50 and ref200.7 in silver can make most men shake. The sound quality this year is so good. The balanced outs and in's are dead on.....I love it.Man I was going that route untill I ran across a leftover B&K avr307 in our Princeton store.I have been toying around with the idea of owning it since it came out and just never did it.It was a long hard road for upgrading this time.I wanted nothing sort of perfection(what my wallet will allow).Well I'm so glad I did.Rotel makes a really good stand against B&K for sound quality, but B&K edges out Rotel this year my alot.In my opnion of course.
B&K and Lsi is really really good.
HbombToo,
Sorry dude,I'll go fix that madness.I try not to misspell or miss type, which I do all the time so.......I'll try to fixer up.I won't be the last time........where's Russ when I need him to fix up my spelling errors. He used to do it, now he leaves me to fight on my own:(Dan

Dan,
now that you owned both (Rotel - B&K) - what do you find? What is it about B&K that you can pinpoint, better than Rotel? I am curious, since when I did the audition, there is no doubt that B&K sounds great, but with Tweeter carry no Rotel, my attempt to compare the two was like trying to remember where I parked in a multi-storey parking structure in a mall, the morning of christmas eve....it's all memory based, and since sound memory lapses so fast, it has no real value. Anywhoo, just curious...I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Hey madmax,
I think our mood has a lot to do with how we enjoy the music. It's hit or miss with me too. It seem like sometimes I'm more open and receptive to whats going on. It could however be related to power, or time of day. I'm gonna try to pay attention to this maybe see if I notice a difference. But offhand I don't think it's the equipment.JmasterJ Polk to the Death -

I agree, it's in the head and definitely not the gear. That's why I walk away, no use trying to fight it.Political Correctness'.........defined

Power definately has a lot to do with it. In the day more people use power and all their demonic, dirty, power corrupting devices of evil give our highly sensative electronics AC power "germs" that can have a noticable effect on audio and video quality. Also, if your power company is evil, they will reduce the number of cycles to 57 or so during the day, especially on cold winter days and hot summer days, then jack up the cycles to 60 or above in the night. -
It takes a good 45minutes of warm up time for the electronics to smooth out and bring out that killer sound I expect. I also believe the line power is affected by the time of day. There's nothing like a pure sounding 2am jam session. I would love to have one of those PS Audio power plants, but they cost more than some higher end amps and there is no justification for an $1800 line conditioner."The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it."

A lot of good comments! I am thinking it is a head problem mostly with some power issues thrown in. I used to have the same probem with car audio and it was much more severe. (a full range system, not one of those sub mobiles). I have often wondered if the barometric pressure has anything to do with it as well. Maybe I'll get a guage and watch that for awhile. It could be that you can pick out the problems better on somedays, maybe. If I could figure this one out for sure then I would be set!

It's extremely hard to say that one is better then the other.Rotel and B&K made very fine products.I think the bottom line here is what do you want out of them?
I still own both and have comapred them side by side a couple of times now. It's really close.Funny how the B&K is an intergraded and the Rotel is seperates yeat the B&K hangs right in there and surpasses the Rotel in a couple of areas........thats good.
Basically polkatese I persoanlly like the B&K sound better then the Rotel gear.It has a overall smoother and warmer tone about it.The B&K has alot of power,It can drive the lsi15's with ease,so can the Rotel, but the B&K does it with alittle more.......grace.
Without having B&K to directly to the Rotel,I would be more then pleased with Rotel.I was going to build my theater around Rotel.B&K has always been in my soul,it's a product I measure all other 2.Receivers and lower end seperates that is.
If you really want to hear the difference between the 2,you can buy B&K and bring it home for a test run or bring your Rotel to the store and do a shootout.
You know what Bro?You already own the rsx1065,thats a damn good piece, you can't touch it for what it costs. At 2 grand......**** it's better then B&K ,B&K avr507 is now 4 grand.Mine was 3498.99 retail.......expensive.......So bang for the buck goes to Rotel by a mile. But it comes down to what you want in the end.Dan

Dan,
thanks, I hear you...one of these days I will do the shootout just to satisfy my curiosity. These whole discussion on integrated vs. separates made me think. Perhaps time has changed that the old limitations and problems with integrated is no longer true. I remember back in the mid 80's when I got my first separates (Hafler 110/220), and having had listened to quad (450?) of a friend of mine, I thought the sonic difference was obvious when comparing separates and integrated. I used to have the Sansui (5900?) back in the '77, and compared to the these separates, it was obvious. That's actually very encouraging (that is, the quality of recent flagship receivers), which means less interconnects and less used space and less heat buildup inside the cabinet...I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Mantis,
Just setting up my ref 50 and I am astounded, and perhaps a bit intimidated, at the range of options and flexibility it has. Is its range of commands, e.g., notch filtering, comparable to other manf's or more than?
BTW... extra eloquent reply to polkatese two posts up

whoa Tour2ma, ref 50 is IN the house? tell us more! what power amp do you use? btw, I am little bit challenged when it comes to taking advantage of those features, would you sum up what features you think in practical term work well? congrats, so you got it $800 off MSRP? Isn't MSRP like $2800 and some change...
:supermad: resist the upgrade demon...
btw, there is NO real reason for me to reshuffle my system right now, other than to SMELL those NIB gears...arghI am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
polkatese,
intergraded and seperates are closer today then ever before. There used to be a huge gap between them.Companies like Rotel and B&K have changed that.....for the better.
Tour2ma,
good move....ref50 huh.Well if you get boggled up with it,I'll help you out.The notch filter is a blessing.Read the manual cover to cover a couple times. There's alot to learn.Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
Polkatese, I believe $2995 is the MSRP for the ref 50. Mine was $800 off this + S&H. Its going to a Sunfire Signature Cinema Grand (Series I) I stole off ebay. A "scratch and denter" that you really have to look hard at to even notice the flaws. I am sure that the new series IIs offer some performance advantage, but the Series Is are sweeeeet.
Mantis, thanks for the offer the manual is a bit imposing at 80+ pages, but so far so good. Complicating tings a bit is I am still running 2 chs as my surrounds are not wired and center has yet to be purchased. Doing set up to load up my SRSs with all the LFE, surround and center info to check room response for a sub decision Doc has been kind enough to assist me on.
But if I run into a problem, I will (eventually) ask for help you know how we men are, wont stop and ask for directions until good and lostMore later,

It would seem that even some (maybe all) manufacturers are aware that "sometimes it sucks" and the possible reasons for it.
