    That's where I ended up going too ... I don't need nor want either Yahoo! or Google crap, such as their proprietary tool bars etc. They were once a cool feature, but not really necessary any more IMO.

    Well, I used to always use Firefox, until I got my current laptop last year, since the fingerprint reader OmniPass software would not work with Firefox unless I paid for a (cheap) upgrade to a newer version, so I tried IE7. It was OK, but I still preferred FF. This new IE8 seems to have corrected most/all of my concerns and so far, I rather like it ... now that it has added some useful features that FF has had for years (such as session restore ...) and seems pretty fast too! Of course, perhaps FF3 is even better, and a few problems down the road with such new software from Micro$haft would not surprise me!

    Installed IE8 on my virtual XP installation on a Fedora 9 box via Sun xVM software, I'll check it out tomorrow.

    I'm not sure I'll ever go back to IE. Chrome has pretty much sealed the deal for me. If anyone has used Chrome and IE8, speak up!

    Never tried Chrome, but I thought it wasn't really all that fabulous ... I think that was the conclusion from the PCMag reviews or something.

    I've used both, I use them all to test compatability with our websites. I can't stand chrome.

    It's pretty painless (and free) to try it yourself, don't know why you'd take the advice of PCMag over personal experience.

    I like Chrome ALOT - mainly because it is simple, no BS...

    I will never go back to FF or IE

    I don't actually like installing software more often than necessary ... especially if I think there's a decent chance I'll just be removing it afterwards! But anyhow: Chrome would not have worked with my fingerprint reader either (probably even with a software upgrade) and I've gotten very lazy with passwords since I started using it! There was no obviously compelling reason in my case to try Chrome.

    Fingerprint reader would be a good reason.

    Otherwise, Chrome is, to me, easier to use. Thats after Ive used navigator, IE, and firefox...within 10 minutes of using Chrome, I already liked it better

    It loads pages much faster and has features I like better...incognito window, ability to drag tabs to its own window, rearrange tabs, keeps my most visited sites up. The pages loading faster is really a noticeable difference. Not only that, Chrome just comes up faster when I click on the icon to open. I'm not one to nitpick..and a millisecond here and there wouldnt sway my decision...but I can have several tabs open and pages come up extremely quick. I didnt even know that a browser had that much to do with speed of loading webpages until i got chrome.

    My only complaint is that theres a couple sites that it doesnt remember passwords. I'm sure that will be fixed in an update though. Small complaint considering this is their first attempt at a web browser.

    Ive been using Chrome now for a couple months and effing love it! Its stripped down of most of the super cool features others have but thats ok because its 3 times as fast!

    I have an outdated 1.6 GHz processor and any website heavy in flash animation bogs it down real bad. IE and FF get real choppy on sites like CNET but Chrome plays them almost perfectly.

    Again, it doesnt have a lot of features but it does have enough to make me happy. I love the bookmark bar that instead of a lot of useless crap youll never use, you can put direct links to your favorite websites. The new tab page shows a screenshot of the 9 most visited sites which is pretty cool and I now have that set as my home page.

    Ill download IE8 as there are some things like financial aid websites that arent compatible with anything other than IE so Ill still use it. But Ill be using Chrome for at least as long as I have a wimpy processor.

    I downloaded IE8 a week or so ago. Last night I removed it and reloaded IE7. IE8 seems to be a real resource hog. Also I got an inordinate amount of pages that would not load the first time around. I also didn't really like the "upgrades"...they were things I don't think I'll use and a waste of resources. I'm still running XP Pro so maybe IE8 works better with Vista. I have both Firefox 3 and IE7 on my computer and find they are pretty much equal in performance. I tend to use IE more because it simply LOOKS better to my eye and I'm used to its interface. I tried Chrome and didn't like it...but then again I'm not a fan of Google. I might take a look at Apple's Safari for PCs. A couple of tests I've seen says the initial startup is painfully slow (20+ seconds) but after that it is lightning fast. My daughter uses it on her Macbook Pro and likes it.

    Like I said, maybe it works better with Vista than XP Pro. My biggest problem was the number of web pages failing to download on the first try.

    Yep Chrome sucks. It would be good for dial up users, but I don't like it on my main machine. Also did you notice that when you install Chrome it adds a program called google.exe in the startup?

    I installed it last week, so far so good, no problems yet. I have Vista home premium. Did anybody notice that it's not listed in remove programs in control panel. Guess once it's installed that's it. That's the way IE 7 is in Vista, it's just part of the OS.

    I use Safari now and then and like it a lot. If I wasnt trying to compensate for a old, overworked processor Id use it a lot more. Its much faster and even smoother than Firefox.
    Yep Chrome sucks.

    Just curious - why no love for Chrome? It works just fine on my computer, uses much less processor power and is faster than IE, Firefox or Safari. There has only been one web page it wouldnt display so I had to use IE to work it but other than that its fine.

    The only features I really want is tabs and bookmarks and Chrome has both.

    My only **** about IE8 other than its too slow is that there is no spell check while youre tying like there is with FF, Safari and Chrome.

    Most tests indicate chrome has the worst privacy and security results in most of the head to head reviews vs the other browers I've seen. I just really didn't like the overall feel of chrome...coupled with the security issues makes it a no go for me.

    Chrome is ok.. I will not be downloading IE 8. I'll stick with Firefox instead I think.

    I'm finding IE8 to be a decent improvement for me, compared to IE7. Like I mentioned earlier, I only started using IE, after several years of Firefox (since version 1.x, actually). I did find that IE7 had mostly caught up with Firefox, so it really wasn't worth it to me to pay the little bit extra to upgrade my fingerprint reader software to make it FF compatible, but I also find that IE8 is an improvement over IE7 for me, on a laptop with XP Pro.

    The funny thing is, since this laptop is an ultra-light (2.68lbs) and not all that new, the specifications aren't all that impressive:

    - Intel Pentium M 1.2 GHz,
    - 1.24 G of RAM (the maximum possible :eek:),
    - Hard drive speed limited to 4,200 RPM (for heat management purposes, I think).

    IE8 actually seems faster to me than IE7, and speed of navigation is not really a concern for me any more, with either version, since I got this machine (my old ultra-light had far more restrictive specifications, since it was a 2000-2001 model, and sometimes struggled). As for resources, I haven't noticed any problems so far with opening multiple sessions and/or tabs.

    Currently, with three sessions, and four tabs (one session has two, the others have only one), According to the Task Manager:

    - I am using 81,680 RAM for the iexplore.exe process.
    - Total "Commit Charge" is 693,500,
    - Physical memory available is 580,000,
    - System cache is 635,848.

    I wouldn't presume to know how much of that information is relevant, or suggesting an excessive use of resources, or otherwise, but I have not noticed the laptop seeming to be sluggish to respond at all really. Browser startup time has not been an issue with IE7 or 8 either (I would guess about five seconds to fully load the fairly simple Home page I use).

    I installed ie9 beta a while ago and it crashed at nearly every site. Haven't touched it since then. I've been using Firefox 4 beta, and like it so far. When's IE9 supposed to be released?

    Not sure mate, IE9 seems stable here. FF4 look good too, and it is also CSS3 compliant (less work for me!)
