Busted a guy for littering, and then...

Jackass driving through the neighborhood about 11:30 this morning stops to copy a number off the "for lease" sign next door(apparently). While he's there, he decides to unload his bag of fast food garbage in the middle of the street. Wife and I are not quite dressed, and just take down his vehicle description and plate.

Wife is MAJORLY pissed (we are both proud and defensive of our neighborhood) and so am I. We call 311 code enforcement. She gets in her car to see if she can find him, and finds his Forerunner parked at the Luby's (cafeteria) at the edge of our neighborhood.

She comes back, tells me, and I dress (stomping boots), grab my mattock handle and his garbage, and proceed to the Luby's, where I park behind him. He doesn't come out of the restaurant after about 15 minutes, so I go in to find him, garbage (and not handle) in hand.

All we could tell about the perp through the back of his vehicle glass was that he seemed to be a youngish not fat male. I scanned the patrons at the Luby's, and it is a sea of blue and gray hair. No way is that guy eating there. So I decide he's in the kitchen. I ask the manager, and he doesn't know who drives the vehicle, and mostly seems interested in me leaving.

Meanwhile, the popo (City Marshalls) come to the house, and Anne sends them down to me, as I am writing a note in English and Spanish to stick to the guy's car. They run the plate - ah, it's Jose Morales, born 1990. They tell me that I can go home, and go inside to give the guy a ticket.

They stop back by the house later, and I can tell they have enjoyed themselves. Apparently the guy was irate and desperate, and had no idea why anyone would care about littering. He said he'd go to court to avoid paying, and the cop said he was going to be there anyway. Jose tells the cop that he'll re-schedule (apparently court isn't new to him) and the cop says that's fine, he'll be there again.

The cop says that if he goes into court with that attitude, he'll get the high end of the max fine of $500. They go away, and we think it's over.

At 4:30 the guy gets off work. Wife is walking the dogs by there, and sees him leave, and calls me. I step out, the guy drives by again, and throws out THE SAME DAMNED BAG OF GARBAGE!

I called it in again, and I'll be very interested to hear about how the Marshalls handle it this time.

Good job...people need to learn that they can't just do that. Some people don't even realize that they're doing anything wrong when they're littering...what do they think happens to it? Some garbage fairy comes around and picks it all up and turns it into oxygen?

I've been driving with friends before, and they'd throw some garbage out my car window. There were several times I stopped and made them go back and pick it up.

Is it really that hard to wait until you get to a garbage can to throw it away?

Does the guy work at the Luby's? If so please give us the phone number so I can call the manager and let him know how I feel about this filthy pig working at his food establishment. I think I will call more than once.

He doesn't know where I live, except that I'm probably in one of about 6 houses. I thought about the idea that this guy could really retaliate further, but I also imagine a situation in which something happens a good bit later, and I suspect or know that he did it. If I try to make the case that the guy has already retaliated at that point, they might wonder why I didn't report it then. Now, if anything does happen, he'll be suspect numero uno.

He does work at the Luby's. I already called the manager and let him know what kind of guy he has working there. He said he appreciated the heads up. I figure the guy is probably a tantrum away from prison, anyway.

I feel pretty secure at home, but I try not to be stupid about it. I'm un/self-employed (I never thought I'd say that as an engineer), and am here mostly. We have two Dobies that have a sixth sense about someone coming on the property, and I have other "tactical" protection.

We live just 1.5 miles east of the Bush's new home, and our property taxes are pretty high. In the Bushies 'hood (the Park cities) nobody does JACK, as they have VERY responsive police. When I think about what I'm willing to tolerate in this neighborhood from outsiders, I just ask if they could get away with it over there. The answer is usually "no." I don't want to be a gadfly, but we've got the sum total of almost all the effort in our lives wrapped up in this house, and we are NOT about to let trash come here and **** on us.

I feel exactly like you do about someone littering and truthfully, I would probably do the same thing you did (unless my wife could talk me out of it). I've stopped several times to pick up trash that I see someone else throw out, then I dispose of it. Only one time I can think of that I actually chased someone down and said, "I'm sure you didn't mean to drop this can so I picked it up for you" They were really shocked and acted like it was an accident (but I know it wasn't). It's ridiculous that so many people feel free to let it fly, but you do have to be careful. People are crazy and confronting someone like that -even though it might be the "right" thing to do can sometimes have bad consequences. You never really know. Like Mike said above, sometimes it's just not worth the risk.

Unfortunate, but that's the society we live in.

In her defense, we are conscientious dog walkers, but sometimes we've run out of bags (surprise - second poopie!) and had to come back. I say just ask nicely if they are coming back, if you think they are crapping and leaving.

I think maybe I got cruelly picked on too much as a kid, and now I'm living my adult life getting even. 20 years of weightlifting and an intense glare facilitate that sometimes. Whatever the reason, I have absolutely no tolerance for people shitting on me. Maybe you'll read about me in the paper one day, but I think I'm pretty smart about it.

I know what you mean. Perhaps I'm naive, but just over the past few years I've come to realize that there are probably more crazy and/or stupid people than there are those of us with good sense anymore. I fear that in spite of all the advancements in technology (perhaps because of) we -humans as a whole- are getting dumber and dumber. I don't know the answers, and I'm generally not a pessimistic person, but that's kind of how I see it.

On another forum I visit, a couple of years (?) ago a very well-liked member was shot and killed by a neighbor over a dispute involving loud music. Really tragic situation.

(Not to hijack but to share my expeerience)

At 7am on a Sunday morning some guy decides to do donuts in his 3/4 ton 4x4 Diesel.
At the corner next to my house. My house is across the street from a park (playground zone) . I run outside cause I don't know what's going on and I see this a-hole smoking up my neighbourhood. I take my cell out of my pocket and proceed to take pictures of this loser. As he drives past me he sees me and really gooses it through the playground zone. I jump in my truck and give chase.... it wasn't much of a chase because he stops his truck about 3 blocks past my house to visit his buddy. I pull up stop my truck and take a pic of him walking away from his truck with his 2 rear tires smoking in the background.
Wife allready phones the cops and they are at my house, and they proceed to tell me it's his word against mine, ( because we were the only people that had complained about it) and I will have to go to court to prove he did this. I say ok and write a statement as the lazy cops go through my pictures on the phone saying that he could still dispute the charge.

That was the last that I ever heard about it. obviousely he didn't dispute the charge. But I did find garbage in front of my house for a few weeks and after one phone call to the bylaw telling them that I was being harrased that ended too. Truth is I was hoping I would catch him throwing out his garbage because he would have had his **** handed to him.

Moral of the story is that you did the right thing! and don't let these jerks endanger our kids and destroy our neighborhoods. Keep it up!

I hate people who litter. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. I've actually stopped along the highway to pick up trash, and when my wife and I used to walk on the beach I'd take a large trash bag with me.

We live at the entrance to our neighborhood and people throw trash in our yard all the time, they just throw it over the fence. Pisses me off, but I have yet to see anyone do it. I am at least glad that we don't have the problem of dogs pooping in our yard. Everyone does a really good job of picking up after their pets.

What, you don't have a garbage fairy in your neighborhood, either?

I think we are dealing with a clash of cultures, and not just one separated by national borders, but subcultures within the US. Some folks just don't think there is anything wrong with pitching their garbage onto someone else. Maybe their parents didn't, either, and they were never taught differently.

Hell, it was only a few hundred years ago that Europeans poured their sewage onto the sidewalk and street from their second story windows. That seems insane to us now (which it is, from a policy perspective) but it was expected then.

I used to work at a mid-large civil firm back in Houston. They once had a real problem with one of their immigrated employees not flushing his tp, but tossing it into the stall corner. For some reason they couldn't get the guy (or guys - it may have been two of them) to flush it.

Well, apparently in many parts of the world, including Korea and many places south of the US, tp is put in a basket, because the sewer flow rates are so low that it would otherwise cause clogging.

Ugh, I've just grossed myself out.

I went to Costa Rica in high school (Spanish class trip) and we had to do this. No TP in the toilet, it had to go in a trash basket next to the toilet. It's almost impossible to force yourself to do this.
