Anyone try rolling their own cigarettes? Is it worth it in sense of cost? NJ raised cigarette tax today almost a dollar a pack, and i believe it's supposed to go up again.

I suppose it would depend on the quality of the tobacco.

This is a link to a pipe shop with rolling machines...

Hah... the price of cigs is going up... but the price of pouch tobacco is going from $12/lb to $36 a lb at the same time. Now's the best time to quit... but they've raised the prices before, and all the old timers told me they used to say "I'm quitting when it hits $1/pack". Soooo... old habits die hard, I gues.

How many cigarettes will a pound of tobacco make? Even at $36 a lb, rolling your own is probably a lot less expensive. Of course, when you get caught with the Zig-Zags in your pocket you got a lot of explaining to do.

My Great Uncle always said "never hire a man that rolls his own cigarettes and tucks in his shirt, because if he ain't busy rolling a cigarette he'll be busy tucking in his shirt and you'll never get any work out of him".

Keep buying lots of cigarettes! The taxes pay for lots of things those of us who don't smoke want to take advantage of!

I believe the increase of cigs is a a direct result of the stimulus plan that just passed. All these companies that pay their boards insane amount of money, get rescued by the damn government. One way to help, hell, lets tax the s...t f.ck outta smokers, while at the same time take money from those that work there asses off and paid taxes.... to save these m.ther f..kers.... Funny government takes money from everyone, to give money to the very entities that make money of us... Has anyone really looked into what is different from communism and good ole america? If you have not had any true exposure outside of the United States, then don't voice your stupid opinions..

And now they want to tax weed... United of the States right? One for all and all for one...

    For those that smoke...

It's quite simple, QUIT!!! I say this from the bottom of my heart, really.

I smoked Camels from 14 to 36 and quit cold turkey. Man, you won't believe how much better things smell(especially you, your clothes, car, house and breath) and taste(other than beer).

But if you won't, then break out the Zig Zags, JOBs, and get to rollin.

The best machine I have found is the Top-O-Matic.

    http://www.smokersoutletonline.com/topomatic-cigarette-machine-p-107.html

You also want to get good tubes.

    http://www.smokersoutletonline.com/zen-25-box-special-p-150.html

The tobacco I buy is $20 a bag, don't buy the cheap $12 crap, it's horrible. The better tobacco's are much better than pre-rolled, I could never go back to Camels. Rolling my own works out to about $1.10 a pack, it'll be $2.60 after the tax increase.

You picked a bad time to start rolling your own though. The $20 tobacco will be going up to $44, the tubes will also be going up as well. I've been stocking up for a month, but most sellers, both online and local are running out of dtock, and can't fill large orders. They don't want anything on hand April 1st when the tax takes effect, as they will have to pay the new tax on all tobacco in stock. Many are closing shop on April 1st.

I believe the tax on roll your own tobacco was suppose to increase 400%. They are trying to capture "our" revenue for even cheap cigarettes.

Check the link, it went up 2,159%, and that's not a typo. It's basically expected to put the RYO companies out of business. It's estimated that it will cost 177,000 jobs in the RYO industry, and up to another 100,000 jobs at independent retailers.

Of the two places that sell RYO in my town that I buy from, one is closing completely on the last day of March, and will destroy all remaining stock. It's either that, or pay tax on all of it, and he can't afford it. The other will also destroy all remaining RYO stock, and stop selling RYO products. They will survive on pre-made cigarettes only, shorten their hours, and lay off half the staff.

These dems really know how to stimulate the economy, and save jobs.

I knew it was some sort of rediculous amount..that's crazy.

Demonize, then Tax to death. What a bunch of ****. Hope you non-smokers are enjoying my tax money.

Guess who is next....Big car, truck, and SUV owners. They are pushing that "per-mile" tax---I hope it wins; I'm only 5 miles from work and get 34mpg out of my car. How's that feel?

Once again people---be careful what "bandwagon" you choose to jump on, the next one might work against YOU.

Ain't that the truth Steve.....since taxes here in chicago are among the highest,I've gone overseas. But be carefull, they will still trace your internet and come after you for taxes later.Cruise the internet, when you find a company in Europe, call them to order, and pick one that does not report sales to anyone here, yes, there are some that do that.A carton of Marlboro Reds is like 14 bucks and 6 bucks to ship.My brand cost over 50 bucks a carton here,I can get it for 30 shipped from Europe. So screw the gov.,like everything else, they drive buisness away.

I think it sux a big hard one, but I still hope that you'd take this as the sign to quit for your health. They're gonna tax everything they can dream up before you know it. I just wish I wasn't broke so I could go stock up on some ammo and a .40, .45 and a nice deer rifle or three:(. Ammo is gonna go thru the roof before too long. It's already gone up since November quite a bit. If "They" get their way, a round will be $5 or more. Then the same thing will happen to reloaders as is happening to twisters.

Just another freedom taxed to death. Who would ever have thought that it would be illegal to smoke in a friggin bar???

Thats just it,if they can't ban it,they'll tax it to oblivion.Like Steve said, wait untill cap and trade comes out, then they'll go after sugar, limit your pets because of greenhouse gasses, and tax you for being overweight. All in the name of a "better" society.Sounds more like B.S. to relieve you of more of your hard earned coin.

I'm not sure if RYO is the way to go. I work for a cigar/pipe shop on Sundays in Virginia, and we were given these as estimated MINIMUM price increases (from our distributors)that will go into effect April 1, 2009:

    Large Cigars - $ 0.40 per cigar
    Cigarettes - $ 0.62 per pack
    Small Cigars/Cigarillos - $ 0.97 per pack
    Pipe Tobacco - $ 1.73 per lb
    Roll-Your-Own Tobacco - $23.68 per lb (really)

In reality, we are expecting an increase on cigars of about a dollar a stick, and the same for cigarettes as well. In reality, most all of these are undershooting what the increases will actually be.

And I hear you ND13. Tobacco built the state of VA, and yet they just passed a law banning smoking in all bars/restaurants.

I totally agree. When I have company I will bum a smoke. Dry nasty crap. I used to smoke Marlboro's. I worked with a guy who smoked Camels. We were at a convenience store. The guy asked for a pack of Camels. The clerk said real men smoke Marlboro's. He said I smoke Camels you ride them. Give me my cigs:D
