I'd take some orig 901's if presented to me at a decent price, if you are a fan of FR drivers, it's a cool find.
But bag some for the price of say, SDA 1c's or LSi9's, or Maggie MMG's, etc etc, no friggin way.

I've seen earlier models go for around $400. Sure they're not worth their MSRP by a mile, but not a bad little bookshelf at this price.
I've heard that each drive is rated @ like .87 Ohms. And that there is a warning on the back of each one to discourage anybody from connecting one up independently of the others.Make it Funky!

gidrah,
One thing the 901's are not are bookshelves. They used to come with their own optional pedestal stands. With 8 of the 9 drivers rear firing, they needed placement with a lot of air around, under, over and, especially, between them. Set up properly and driven with a decent amp they could be pretty fine sounding. And the little boogers could handle like 270 watts continuous, yet be driven by 50 wpc.
When they hit in the early 70's nothing could touch them at their price for sheer volume and imaging. But, and it was a pretty big butt, the bass EQ electronic "boost" module tainted their sound for many. At 4"(?) the drivers just couldn't reach low enough on their own, and the EQ box tried to compensate for that shortcoming.
While we all agree that the B company has fallen from the ranks of the great audio manufacturers, there was a time when many of us drooled over the 901s. Then came the 301s and the start of a long downhill slide
But the original 901s have to get credit for being the forerunner of the multiple mid-bass designs we love today. Just cant think of the name of the audio leader using this principle off-hand

When on a bookshelf, they sound best with the volume control turned all the way down. Try it, it works.;)Proud and loyal citizen of the Digital Domain and Solid State Country! -

Wouldn't that sort of defeat the entire purpose behind their design? The point is that you have limited (but some) direct sound and a wealth of reflected sound. Huh.. that sounds pretty good - and sortof techy... Bose should use something like "direct and reflected" as an ad slogan. -
Bingo Brudette... proverbial nail on the head. The like 89% refected sound was a major key. I heard them the wrong way and... nah, no bueno...
Sorry, gidrah, should have known you know them, but they need air. Otherwise raife is pretty much on the money.
BTW, I'm fairly sure they would not stand up to an A-B against much of Mathew's line, past, present or furture, but in their day... More than a little historical significance there. Maybe not on the scale of the AR3a, Orig Advent, DQ-10's or others, but in their day...More later,

Bose always stated the 901's power handling as "Unlimited". You're not going to tell me those nine little drivers could handle 500 - 1000 watts continuous. I always wondered what their actual power handling was.
Unlimited my ****! Bet thats why they don't publish any frequency response specs. No excuses! -
John,
I always heard 30w/ driver for the 270 figure... at least that's what I remember for the originals.
AudioCraft, a great audio shop in NE Ohio that's still around, always had top of the line sand McIntosh driving their demos. Don't remember the specific one anymore, but pretty sure it was ~500 wpc.More later,
