Back listening to vinyle

Have been without a turntable for at least 20 years but still have some of the albums from 30+ years ago.

Came across a guy at audiogon that was local with a Technics SL-1300, made him an offer and picked it up this afternoon. It came with a Signet 1Ea cartridge, not able to find any details on the cartridge but some of our old vinyle sounds great.

My wife is sooo happy because she can listen to one of her old Poco albums that never made it to CD.

The RDO194 tweeters have never sounded so good in my SDA-!Cs. I would have thought digital would make the highs sound better but no way.:D

We even found our 30+ year old Discwasher.

Anyway, just thought I would share our re-found love for vinyle after all these years.

If anyone knows anything about Signet 1Ea cartridge I would appeciate it. It must be a MM since My Denon AVR needs a step up transformer for a MC.

Good on you. You don't need to spend a mint to get into some good vinyl experience;)
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Conradicles and Ben62670, Yep the AQ type 4 and Ben's silver ICs made a huge difference.

I am on Cloud 9 listening to records that are older than my children.

    The clarity is just unbelievable.

I do not know if I can go back to listening to CDs or SACD:eek:;)

I have not been that impressed with the RDo194s until lastnight, vinyle makes them sing.

Get yourself a decent record clamp, preferably a reflex clamp, and you will be amazed at the improvement in sound quality. While you are at it CLEAN THOSE RECORDS THOROUGHLY and you will be even more amazed.

Congrats on your renewed found love of vinyl.

Yep, I am sure they need a good cleaning. Is the reflex clamp a type or brand. Could use some recommendations for that.

    Thanks,

The "reflex" clamp is a type of clamp. Some are just weights, some are screw-down clamps made to fit threaded spindles, etc etc. You want the free-standing "reflex" clamp.

You can get it at Elusivedisc.com or any of the online analog stores. You might pay more for the clamp than you did your turntable but it is worth it especially that you will probably be upgrading to another table in the future and can use it on that too.

Just an FYI. That Sota clamp doesn't work very well. You can't adjust the down presure. As a matter of fact I gave one of them away.

The Sota reflex clamp you had posted the link to.

It has flat foam surrounding the platform so it doesn't have a firm foundation to put presure on the label of the record. Plus it has a non-adjustable flip top catch which closes the collet around the spindle. It will simply hold the record in place but not force the record to make intimate contact with the platter from the label out to the lead in bead.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA $1,195 they have brass balls selling it for that much. I'll bet mine still works and sounds better.

PS: what's even better they don't even mention its ability to remove warps. I'm still spliting my sides laughing.

Congrats on gettin back into vinyl! I just did the same thing and man, it does sound good. When I was a kid I had one of those cassette deck / turntable / tuner all-in-one pieces that was horrible. Truly amazing what a decent (not necessarily $$$) turntable can do for the sound.

I believe KABUSA makes a record clamp that is inexpensive w/ a bubble level..you may want something better though.

I've been buying almost all used LP's and finally broke down and invested in a VPI 16.5 record cleaning machine. I think my girlfriend thought I'd lost it spending that much on a device to clean LP's, but once I cleaned her records and she listened to the difference she "understood" :D

Congrats on buying the 16.5. If you are going to be cleaning used records, I recommend using MFSL Super Deep record cleaning fluid then rinse the LP with with whatever fluid you are using now.:)

The "Super Deep" will get all the crud and mold release compounds out of the record and then you can just use the regular cleaning fluid before each play.

Funny, I was just going to order the RRL Super Deep and the Vinyl Wash from elusivedisc! I've been using the VPI fluid and while it does a good job, it doesn't seem to do well on fingerprints and more "set in" dirt. I'm also not sure about the VPI brush - was thinking of trying the Disc Doctor brushes. Still trying to figure out a routine that I like...

I notice you are in DE - I'm in PA but work in DE. I bought my VPI from Joe at Overture. Gave me a tour of the shop - amazing. Definitely a cool place and cool people.

I use the VPI brush to apply the Super Deep. Then I use an MFSL brush to apply the rest.

Overture is an awesome place. Where in Delaware do you work? Maybe you could stop by one day.

I have another thread about tubes for my Jolida cd player because it does not come close to the sound of my turntable. I am not running anything too fancy but the sound out of it makes my speakers ( either the 1.2 or the carver amazing) come alive. Once you are back on records, it is hard to go back to cd's. It really wakes up a system.

Congrats on the turntable. Many technics are verrrrrrry underrated especually for the $.

I have had ProJect turntable, rega, denon dp62, and I still wind up going back to the combo of a old technics 1200 and Denon DL160 with a pro-ject tube box II SE.

Since getting the TT I have not listened to s single CD and I now know how to spell vinyl:o

I know the SL-1300 is probably considered entry level and I can find nothing about the Signet cartridge but it sounds wonderful. I will be surprised if the clamp can make it sound better but we will see tonight because it arrived today.
