Heck yeah, a single Dragon crossed over at 55hz with a pair of Polk 3-way floor-standers would seriously rock.:D

Very nice looking new website and subwoofer selection....I did have to laugh when I read this though...

" Built and designed from the ground up, no expense was spared on the components used throughout this masterpiece of a driver."

" To properly harness the power of motor, we used a massive cast aluminum frame. The downright beautiful silver-anodized frame aids in cooling the motor both with its surface area and its larger air flow vents located near the voice coil. "

" Exclusive Epik driver design "

The Car audio world called and wants its circa 2004 frame back :D

Actually the entire frame ( Casting marks included ;)...they must have bought all of the old stock or purchased the tooling to make the frames themselves ) is from a subwoofer line I used to use a lot back in 04.

I just thought it was funny reading all of that first , and then looking over at the driver and instantly recognizing the frame.

Of course the motor/spider/surround( High roll linear rubber ala TC Sounds ) are up to 09 specs no doubt. Hurry up and get one Ron, I would love to give it a test session.

This pic shows the single ceramic magnet version( With screens in the vents to keep junk away from the VC )...they also had double and triple stacked versions....the Epik driver here has a double stack.

You cant really call it the 2004 version...the frames are identical , but the rest is completely different....that being said

They sounded great...I purchased quite a few of them....still have 2 of them, and with the way I go through subwoofer drivers...that says a bunch.

They were designed for sound quality and low frequency reproduction ( Used high excursion rubber surrounds and more compliant high excursion spiders to give T/S parameters more in line with todays drivers...like a 26mm Xmax and a 27Hz Fs ) ...where as about 95% of the other car audio subwoofers of the time were more concerned with burping at high decibel levels in the 60 to 80 hz range , with extremely stiff foam surrounds and spiders resulting in really high Fs's ...worthless for the kind of subs we like for HT/Music.

I am betting these new drivers are pretty good performers.....

Yeah, it looks like Chad went to the Ron Stimpson (SVS) marketing school. Nothing like prose on steriods that jumps off the page with enthusiasm ;).

That woofer is a beast, Im hoping someone orders one and can provide some feedback. A quad Dragon setup, should just be insane.

Actually, I have seen several Cerwin Vega woofers that use the same exact basket design...In fact they are so similar that it makes me wonder.....

What's the benefit of the double magnet vs the single magnet?

Single...double...triple...quadruple...none of that really matters...its field strength you are after.

Basically a higher force motor ( Magnet = permanent magnet component ) to control/dampen the voice coil ( Voice coil = electromagnetic component ) is what they are after using that stacking method. Ceramic magnets are cheap and by using more of the same strength magnets, you increase the field strength.

Increasing the BL product ( The field strength in the air gap multiplied by the length of the voice coil wire in the field ) also can allow you to use a smaller enclosure....also increasing the WAF :D

If the BL product is too low, the speaker is electrically not very well damped (which will result in a woofer with a high Qts). A bump in frequency response and a level drop in midband efficiency may be the result. If the BL product is too high, the speaker is electrically overdamped (Low Qts woofer). A very high midband efficiency, but the driver starts to roll of early.

An high BL product can be achieved in a number of ways: increase field strength; or increase wire length in magnetic gap.

Long stroke ( Huge Xmax ) woofers, having only a part of the voice coil in the air gap, need a very high field strength to achieve a high BL product.
You can use huge ( Or multiple ) cheap ceramic magnets....or much smaller NEO type magnets with a much higher force for their size.

So depending how strong a particular manufacturer's magnet assy is...one single well built magnet may have a higher field strength then another manufacturer's big triple stack.

And check out a NEO magnet assy :D

I'd love to hear what people have to say about the Vanquish/Sentinel as well. Wonder how they'll stack up with the eD/SVS 12" offerings.

    Fronts: Energy RC-70
    Center: Energy RC-LCR
    Surrounds: Energy Veritas 1.0CM
    Subwoofer: SVS PC12-NSD
    Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR705
    Amplifier: Denon POA-2200 w/ Ben's ICs

Pics of my setup (click me)

Had a conversation with Chad today. The motor on his 12 driver is similar to the new SVS Plus driver 12.4. That and more power in a smaller box allows the Sentinel to have more output at 20hz than his former Knight. The Vanquish is a shot across the bows at the JL 12". The Sentinel is aimed at the SVS Plus lineup. Too soon to tell whether he's hit a home run, but I'm sure they are well built, powerful and a great value. I'm still waffling about a Dragon or Phoenix. From what he tells me, the Dragon will perform like my U13 in sealed config...might or might not sound better. He thinks so, but Chad's smart enough to not make claims. The Phoenix will eclipse the U13 in output and sound great as well in a 22" cube. Fact is I don't need any more output. Stay tuned.
